Some of my Wiz 8 characters have been drained. (It was an encounter
with Vampire Bats, or something like that.) How do I recover from this
condition? The manual is very unhelpful-- it just says something like
"being drained is the worst thing that can happen to you, outside of
death". Well, I've recovered from being dead several times, now, thank
you very much!! How do I recover from being drained?

iirc there is no spell to recover from this, but a certain potion (forgot
name) available at many drugstores...

You can cure the 'drained' condition by drinking a Renewal potion. I've
heard that the pool in the Arnika temple (by Braffit, not the one
downstairs) can cure it too.

Thanks. Looks like a trip to Arnika! (I just spent the last of my gold
buying about 5 spellbooks for my bishop. She's my only spellcaster,
and is now practically unstoppable! Well, for a 12th level character,
anyway...)
There's a rather expensive potion (Renewal, I think) that does it.
However, you may wish to wait. Drained characters have lower hitpoints
until the condition is cured, but in many cases the loss is minor.

Yes, it was only about 5 hps out of 80 to 100 hps, so I've just been
living with it. However, I'm at a good "break point", and thought I'd
take the moment to fix the draining.

Doesn't it also lower stamina points, and reduce the rate of stamina
recovery in battle? I know that Plague does that, forgot if Drained
also does that or not.

Aside from going to Arnika to fix the draining, another alternative
to the expensive Renewal potion is ressurrection -- that is if you
don't mind killing off your drained characters =)

Just to report back, yes the pool in Arnika does cure being drained.
I'm ready to go adventuring again!

You must have a different manual to me. :-) Mine says of being drained,
"The only known cure is to drink a rare (and costly) Renewal Potion",
which I don't think is unhelpful. BTW, it's disease that's described
as perhaps the worst condition short of death. Draining isn't a patch
on being Diseased...
If you can't afford the ~5000gp to buy a Renewal Potion, there's a way
to get one for much cheaper.
It's a bit of a spoiler so...

Anyone with the Alchemy skill can mix potions to make new ones.
light heal + moderate heal = heavy heal
cure lesser condition + heavy heal = cure disease
cure disease + heavy heal = renewal
The ingredients (2 x light heal, 2 x mod heal, 1 x cure lesser) cost
around 1000gp, which is a big saving over buying the renewal potion
straight.
You can also use this to make lots of money by selling the renewals back
to the vendor.
And as another bonus, your character gains lots of Alchemy skill!

Oops, I stand corrected. Same manual. However, I don't think I have
run across any renewal potions, so I just dismissed the info as
unhelpful.
And thanks for the spoiler... I had heard people talk about mixing
potions, but I never figured out how to do it myself. I've got a
couple of characters with alchemy skill (ranger and bishop).
