It's the one you get from the bonus disc, Shield of Balduran. It lowers
your strength by one, BUT it reflects *ALL* Beholder beams. That's right.
I just walked up to the Elder Eye with my lone Ranger (everyone stood away
to marvel) and whacked him a couple times, turning all his attacks back on
him.
And the five Beholders who attack you earlier on? Feh. It's not even funny
how easy it is to kill a Beholder with this shield. And it has a COOL
spell effect too. You're surrounded by a glowing white disc around your
feet.
Everyone should get this shield. Most of my party doesn't even use a
shield (except for Jaheira) because of dual wield or two handed weapons,
but I keep this on my ranger just in case.

Skip the shield and find the Cloak of Mirroring. You get to keep
the strength point, _and_ it reflects _almost_ all the beholder
attacks.
Petrified beholders make nice household statuary. ;-)

But that's later in the game, correct? I'm in chapter 2 now. I thought the
cloak was somewhere in ch 4?
It sounds cooler though.
You don't get any xp for killing petrified beholders, though. I went
back through the *spoiler* beholder map once I'd cleared it out,
casting stone to flesh on the beholders scattered around. I want my
14k xp, dang it.

Dunno. I was so focused on getting Imoen back, I wasn't paying
attention to where I was finding things.
>I'm in chapter 2 now. I thought the cloak was somewhere in ch 4?
Maybe. I'm really not sure. I waited to do about half the Ch. 2
quests until after I'd retrieved Imoen, so my game's been pretty
jumbled.
For example, I'd finally reached the elven city a couple nights
ago, but left so I could do the Xzar, Twisted Rune, and Kangaxx
quests first.
>It sounds cooler though.
It's great. It reflects offensive damaging single-target spells
by design, so mages and other enemies with spellcasting abilities
generally end up doing more damage to themselves than to my PC.
Gauths are a pushover, too. All they do is shoot electrical
blasts, which're reflected, so I just stand there and let them
kill themselves (and anything (read: other guaths and beholders)
else in the line of fire).
Get yourself something to block charm/domination spells and
stunning attacks, and you've got the perfect tank. :D

The first or second map?

By the end of the game, it doesn't matter. Stupid xp cap. I
maxed out everyone except the last character I picked up by the
beginning of Ch. 7, even with the xp lost on destroying the
stone beholders.
They really should lift the cap at least a million or so. I
went to a lot of trouble to get some 8th and 9th level spells
memorized by Imoen and Aerie, and I'll never be able to use
any of them. :-(

The Twisted Rune is a house in the Bridge district. It's not a true
quest per se. You must have a rogue stone when you go in there. I was
exploring the bridge district with a party of level 10/11 characters
when I went there, heady from successfully running an errand for the
Shadow Thieves. It's quite a nasty fight, but you do get some great
goodies, including a Staff of the Magi, which let's you cast a
Lightning/Fireball 3 times a day among other things.
You get the Kangaxx quest in the Docks district... go to the house to
the west of Mae'var's kip, kill the minotaurs then get the quest from
Kangaxx.

You do get the xp, however it's at the point when the beholder gets
petrified, not when you smash it.

If you don't have the bonus CD, then you can achieve the same thing
with the Cloak of Mirroring (without the strength loss or taking up
one hand with a shield). I had to laugh when I walked through the
beholder den in the Underdark with a single character and wiped out
the entire population of Gauths, Beholders, and Elder Orbs without
once raising a weapon. ^_^
I laughed too. Until one of the Elder Orbs cast Imprison on me.
That put a damper on things...

>Where do you get said cloak? =p
I couldn't recall offhand, but a quick search indicates that it
probably appears in the Underwater City. The cloak is possibly the
best item in the game (not including the twinky bonus gear),
reflecting all damage-based magic back at the caster.
One of the more interesting situations I experienced was dealing with
a mage who had a reflection spell on, and cast a Death spell at me.
The magic bounced back and forth between our shields until his
protection failed and he killed himself. ^_^

Mm-hmm. The one thing about the beholder-types that bugs me more than
anything else is that they can cast touch-range spells from a
distance, and in the case of an unavoidable, basically unreversible
spell like Imprisonment, it can be a little ridiculous.

Unfortunately, any NPC with imprisonment can cast it from range, with
no saving throw, and even if your magic resistance saves you, you
still have to reload the game. It's an instant game-ender if it's even
*cast* at you, whether or not it works. Nice, huh?

Mm-hmm, though as I recall the only times I came up against this spell
were when I was fighting the eyes, and Kangaxx (the most ridiculously
cheap enemy in the game). Spell Immunity, as far as I know, is the
only defense against Imprisonment, but that is a caster-based spell,
so if your main character isn't a mage, you're totally screwed.
Protection from magic scrolls will do it. Complete protection on any
character from all magic.
They can chain cast too like instantly, I walked into a room with a few
gauths and it looked like I was playing gradius with all the stuff flying at
me.

i was in vamp domain and i got MAZE cast on my characters
since for some reason they FORGOT to think that HELD characters means u cant
control them u can sleep when held
so i did
you sleep for 54 days and four hours
ROFL
dumb bitch couldnt find her way in 54 days
Allright, I got the bonus CD, could someone now tell how it is used :)
So if there愀 that extrastuff, how do I get it in the game.
And when I扉e "installed" the bonus CD, where do I find that shield?

The Berserker Kit's berserk ability also protects against it.
I just yesterday had the same problem with the Elder Orb with my main
character so I switched the good equipment to my Berserker (in my 4 my
characters Party for just this reason - the immunities granted by the
Berserk state) and had him take care of it. Very nice ability for the
mega-fights.
