I just purchased Daggerfall and was wondering whether you could play
the game without the CD-ROM.

Please e-mail any suggestions

Thanks in advance

DF requires the CD in the CD-ROM to prevent little hackers from giving
the CD to friends and allowing them to play it without buying it...

Yes, you can play Daggerfall without CD-ROM drive.

As far as I remember you need:

1. Max installation.
2. Manually copy sky*.dat to your \dagger\arena2 catalog.
3. Edit your \dagger\z.cfg file. Tune path and cdpath variable.
like path=.\arena2\ and cdpath=.\arena2\
I don't remeber right now correct values, but I believe that's all.

Do a full install - it will only access the CD for quests - this
drastically speeds things up.

Although true, this is not an answer. I have a laptop with an external
CD drive, and I would love to see a solution to this problem myself.
The laptop powers down whenever the lid is closed, and when it restores
it doesn't pick up the CD. I have to shut down completely and reboot.
I generally prefer to leave the CDROM in the case and just use the
laptop anyway! Unfortunately, with the new spate of games being
released with the CD Key, I am forced to struggle with the whole setup,
removing much of the convenience of using a laptop! Frankly, I only
play DF on my desktop unit, it would just be too much of a pain to use
the laptop...

Close, except that it's *.VID, not sky*.dat. It's about 80MB. It
might be helpful to copy it to another directory, in case you ever
want the disk space back and are willing to go back to using the CD.

Also, you then have to call the program with the line:

fall z.cfg

instead of:

dagger

It's not keyed, it just keeps the multimedia parts on the CD. You can
do it without the CD. See the posts above. :)

thanks for reposting Sandra. Sure would be nice if someone would do a
FAQ of all your helpful posts. ESP sort of serves this purpose, but I
don't know if it's been updated with the last 2 months useful ng posts.

It can be played from a laptop, or other PC without any access to a CD
drive, based on what folks have posted in the past. You have to change
one file, and use a different command to start up, but that's about it
(along with copying a few more files than the max install). I don't
know the details, they're probably on websites like Daggerweb and ESP,
but if all else fails, email Sandra ("slink")--she has posted the
precise info before, and probably knows more about DF (and its
programming) than anyone else in the ng. You can get her address from
any post here, or from alt.games.elder-scrolls.

P.S. I'll regret this post, I just know I will. <more grinning>

This being the case, why jump down the throat of anyone making this request?
My point was simply that there are legitimate reasons to despise the key disc
scheme of copy protection.  Then again, I dislike all such schemes, and
despise the piracy which has made them a fact of life since the early days of
C64 gaming.  Ever misplace your Pool of Radiance code wheel? Faagh.

Well, use somethink like fakecd (Its real funny, the hard disk needs to be
renamed Daggerfall (lower case letters) so some diskedit program is necessary.)
And, btw, NO, I do not copy the game or such...its performance is that bad that
I run it from hard disk, that's all.
Hmmm, should be possible to copy everything to hard disk and just edit the z.cfg
file, but I didn't try that one. Too lazy.

Gotta leave now for some dungeon crawling...
