Games that go with the theme of being "alone" in a desert island, like
Trespasser, Carnivores, Giants and that kind of games.

Well, seriously, I would want games that can be played forever. So
rather Elite or Tetris than Fallout 2 or Grim Fandango.

computer with you?

I would take
The Last Express with me.
Curse of Monkey Island is a pardise because of it's tropical beauty.
Gabriel Knight 1
Civilization 2
Baldur's Gate (I don't have this game yet) I plan to get it.

Better take something like Yoda Stories... WHY THE HELL you ask?

Well a normal comp would have no power. So that leaves a laptop.
Lap tops have so little run time you could only get through a few
quick games..hence yoda stories. :)

LOL don't you hate it when people take things to literally. :)

Internet access or not?

Without Internet access:

#1 Master of Orion 2 (with all of the patches)
#2 Toe Jam and Earl for my Genesyst emulator (I have the orignal cart
sitting on the shelf right next to me, so for all you anti-pirating
preachers: Nyah!)
#3 NHL99 (With all of the latest patches and rosters, etc)
#4 ATF Gold (or if I can, the new USAF game coming out soon from Janes)
#5 Playboy's Strip Poker (hey, it's gonna get mighty lonely on that island!)

With Internet Access:

#1 Tribes
#2 Rainbow 6
#3 Half-Lif....er...wait a minute! If I have internet access, I'll just
send out some freaking emails telling people to come rescue my ass!
Sheesh...

Ah, but perhaps you've managed to bring along some solar panels and the
appropriate equipment to use them, so run time isn't a problem. (Why not?
You've managed to save a computer to start with, so this isn't that much of a
stretch.)

In which case...

Master of Orion II
Master of Magic
Ancient Domains of Mystery

(These three are all random-worlds, at least partially, so they are effectively
unlimited in replayability.)

Fallout 2

(Not randomized, but a large degree of replayability, if you want to try out
every possible combination of characters and ways to do things.)

Quest for Glory 5

In addition to some replayability, the musical score is fantastic, and it's
worth having for that reason alone.

If the original question was: "Here's 5 games I'd take to a deserted island
with me, which one wouldn't you take because it kind of sucks?" then your
reply would have been sufficient. Since that wasn't the original question,
your reply just falls into the "blabbering crap" bin. Would you like
another go at it?

A deserted island by myself?

1) Tombraider
2) Tombraider 2
3) Tombraider 3
4) Strip Poker (remember that one?)
5) Any other game with scantily clad women with bodacious ta-tas.

Remember, it's a deserted island and you're by yourself for a loooong time.

I'd definitely have --- Master of Magic

Total Annihilation: Commander's Pack
Betrayal at Krondor (considering I could run it.) o)>

Knights of Xentar (w/add-on) meets that criterion, plus it's kind of a
fun game otherwise, except for the combat which is stupid.

Trina

>Remember, it's a deserted island and you're by yourself for a loooong time.

Well, in traditional desert island "discs" there are some books that
come with the deal (complete works of Shakespeare and something else,
and I personally have added a lot more, such as the OED in the small
books and the complete works of Plato and Aristotle, but I digress)
plus one *luxury item* (which, unfortunately for you, Krud, cannot be
another human being, this game is brutal). So to combat loneliness I
long ago decided my luxury item would be a pregnant cat so I wouldn't
go bananas. If you find all of this depressing, then you may take a
liftime supply of prozac with you thus neutralizing the condition that
figured in your making the choices you did ... so assuming you had no
libido, what five games would you take? (Sorry for intruding Toony,
but you didn't set any strict rules so I thought I'd make up a few,
plus throw in some goodies, more to come when I figure out what my own
choices will be.)

Well, lets see. I would want games that have a LOT of replay value,
and I would want at least one game from each of my favorite genres.

So, let me see, I would like to take:

HTML TADS - technically not a game, but it's a language for writing
interactive fiction, and since I'll have a lot of time on my hands,
I'll eventually be able to write something that will rival Infocom's
Trinity. If I do make it off the island I'll be a hero in the
rec.arts.int-fiction group.

Diablo - best rogue-like game I've ever played.

Sid Meier's Civilization II Gold - not really an original choice, but
who can argue against this masterpiece?

Master of Orion II - gotta satisfy that space empire craving.

Quake II - with all the customized stuff I could write for this game,
this game could satisify my FPS craving for years.

Damn, that's five already? Sheesh. I know my hard drive will hold more
than five games...

Runners Up:

Dungeon Hack - almost as much fun as Diablo for that rogue-like fix.

Fallout 2 - if this were open-ended it would be a no-brainer choice.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri - someday I might get tired of Civ2...

Need for Speed 3 - a superb racing game, if only it had a track/car editor.

Half-Life - a better game than Quake II, but not quite as much replay
value for a solo player. Of course, if I had friends on the island,
that would change my decisions significantly.

Total Annihilation - i would tire of this before the others, but I'm sure
I'd miss my RTS kick if I didn't get to take this along.

Unlimited Adventures - i'd like this even more if I got to take a collection
of other people's adventures in addition to the editor...

Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries - something about big robots with big guns is a
big turn-on for me, I don't know...

I'd like to take an Adventure game, and perhaps Curse of Monkey Island
or Grim Fandango would be it, but since the replay value is low, I wouldn't
waste a slot on it if I only get 5 choices.

Well, I'd need two computers - my old Amiga for game #1, PC for the
ret:

1) Wayne Gretzky Hockey (Amiga)
2) Grand Prix Legends (on a desert island I would actually have time

3) Half-life (limited replayability but I gotta have a classic FPS)
4) Jedi Knight/MOTS (gotta have a Star Wars fix, and that's the best
one)
5) The latest Janes flight simulator available at the time (it's hard,
realistic, and takes a long time to master)

Jeez. Okay, let's clear it up for you:

You've already searched the island and have found multiple sources of food
and a fresh water spring in the center of the island. Amazingly, you've
also found a strange apparatus which happens to be some sort of solar
powered energy containment system left behind by the US gov't or aliens, or
aliens working for the US gov't (take your pick). It has various outlets
with various voltages (or watts or whatever) and has stored more than 30
years worth of electricity in it. There's no intelligent life on the
island(unless you consider fish and birds to be intelligent), it's uncharted
on every map, and you won't be found by anyone in, let's say oh, 30 years.

NOW, which 5 games would you want for whatever computer you have on the
island with you (IBM, Apple, C64, etc).

Since I did not specify that you did bring a radio, nor did I specify that
there was any type of "internet connection", I can see why you asked those
Qs (smart ass). All you have is a deserted island, an stable food and
water source, a solar powered electrical doohickey, a computer, and your
choice of 5 games.

Any other repeating you'd like me to do?

Interesting question. Considering gettingpower would be a problem.
How about modify from being stuck to, you have made lots of money,
decide to become a hermit, bought an island, and have equipt yourself
for the stay. But the gist of the question is "If you're stuck to 5
games to play for
the rest of your life what would it be?"

I'm supprise that some of you selected some adventure games. Not that
they are good or bad.
But if I'm stuck to the same 5 games for the rest of my days, I would
want something with alot
of replayablility (civ I-II, MOO, ect...) I'm not aware of any Adventure
games, RPG may be a bit
better in replayability, but same storyline.

(obcourse, if I could I get a satellite connection, and play online
games).

I think the original question was poorly constructed. It should have
gone like this:

"What are the five games that, if you took them with you into a
deserted island, would make you not to even want to be rescued from
there?".

I think that takes care of the problem of trying to build a radio or
helicopter from the parts of the computer. ;-)

Rogue-like my ass. Calling Diablo roguelike is an insult to rogue-like
games in general. Diablo is a good game in itself, but not in my and I am
sure many other's opinion, a rogue-like. A real rogue-like can be played
infinately. Diablo cannot. Dispite it's randomly generated levels, each
game of Diablo is not different enough to make it infinitly playable, anf
the only sort of tactics I've ever seen used are the one space in the door
trick (hell that gets boring) and running like hell. Diablo is a hack and
slash try-hard roguelike. It nearly made it. Sure. Define it as one. I'm
sure it is and has been.

By the way, I would take Ancient Domains of Mystery (The best rogue-like
ever, and a real one for that matter), Carmageddon (running over pedestrians
never gets boring no matter what way you look at it), WCW/nWo Revenge and a
fictional (?) n64 emulator thang, Duke Nukem 3D with level editor (Shake it
baby), and the last one... oooh can't decide.... Exile 3? HoMaM 2?
Leisuresuit Larry v x.x? Alphaman? Moria?

A golf set (20m, par 50, damn sand.....)

Monopoly (I play against myself all the time, don't you?) *increases dosage*

I think a lot of people agree with me when I say it IS a rogue-like.
Since no one has polled the world on this, I doubt we'll ever know,
but since we're talking OPINION here, not FACT, it doesn't make a hill
of beans of difference one way or the other.

It's pretty inifinitely playable, as infinitely as other rogue-likes, IMHO.
Esp. considering the multiplayer factor.

Wrestling? You have 5 games for the rest of your life and you want to take

If I could have only ONE game, it would have to be Nethack. For the

solitare games and such. But Nethack, a bicycle-powered battery charger

Diablo is Rogue, with MUCH better graphics. If you think Rogue is

I didn't say, Rogue, I said Rogue-like. And Rogue is crap.

And by infinitely playable I don't really mean infinite... but you know what
I mean. I played Rogue for about 10 minutes. I'm just grateful people like
Thomas Biskup and Jeffrey Olson decided to take the idea further. I've been
playing ADoM for ages and I'm not even slightly tired of it. And other
people have played it for years, ever since it came out, and are still
playing it a lot.

How many times must an adventurer say "Where should I put this" before you
quit and find a more fun involving game? Oh what the heck. Diablo's got
blood and corpses in full graphical detail, not to mention those dead women
on spikes.

A Brilliant game but very hard
>Civilization 2

The best strategy game for the specs. Excellent addictive game which when
you are bored of you can come back to later on. Never loses its
addictability.

>Baldur's Gate (I don't have this game yet) I plan to get it.

Havent played it but sounds good.

My top five would be :

1. Civilization II

2. Championship Manager 3

3. Gangsters

4. X- Wing Alliance

5. Jedi Knight or Quake II Or something similar.

Any way you could post that Toe Jam and Earl emulator on this newsgroup as I
would love it and also have the game. I in turn will post you one of the
many that I have!!!!

What the hell are you talking about? I wasn't talking to you, it was a
reply to some schmuck who simply replied to the original question of "Which
5 games would you take...." with "Baldur's Gate sucks".

Dumbass.

Now you are talking. Is all it needs now is some mildly offensive copy in a
game rag and it can make the bill klinton no-no list.

While him calling you dumbass was uncalled for, he was correct. You
really need to quote what you are replying to.

How many thousands of players are still playing Diablo I wonder?

Would you really risk the last 5 games you'd ever play, for a chance at
being rescued? :)

Easy.

1. Nethack
2. Mame emu w/ all games
3. Civ2 Gold
4. Chaos Overlords (yes I love and still play this game)
5. Ultimate Wizardy Archives

Now if there were a net connection I would remove the Wiz archives and replace
it with Everquest.

You never had. Go to www.lastexpress.com and find more about this
masterpiece. I am glad that I found this game. It is not a game to be
miss. This game is very easy game for an Adventure game. It is very
diffrent from most games of this genre. It's one of a kind.

> Played the first two monkey islands, both classics!!

I played the first game and the third one. I never bought the second
game. I thought the first Monkey Island was better than the 3rd game.
They are Classics. The first one anyway.

I know, I needed a Walkthrough to finish Gabriel Knight. It is not as
The Riddle of Master Lu. That was hard!

Myst..... what a strange game that appeared to be.... *shrug*

whats wrong with killing r's endlessly? And all those F's and @'s and Z's
and h's and C's and &'s? I would spell it out for you with hyphens between
each letter but that would be silly and offensive. Imagination!!!!

My picks:

Masterpieces of Infocom
Ultima Archives
Lucasarts Archives

And the two imaginary collections:

The Complete ftp.gmd.de IF archive
Greatest Roguelikes

Guess my 5 would be (and in no order):

1. Betrayal at Krondor
2. Might & Magic VI
3. Gabriel Knight - Sins of the Father (My favorite game)
4. Fall Out 2
5. Realms of the Haunting

I only get 5? Geez, Ginger, Mr. and Mrs. Howell, etc. went only on a 3 hour
tour and they got to bring trunks of money and wardrobes, etc. :->

I selected mostly RPG because of the replay value. While I thoroughly enjoy
adventure games, replay is somewhat limited. With my #2 and 4 selections,
different characters, reputations, etc.

Good luck, take care and hope I'm never stranded on a deserted isle.

Games with HIgh replayability of course.
Let's see...

Ultima Online if I had net access (I must have net access, I would need
stay in contact with people (on my computer would be installed all my net
stuff, IRC, USENET, WEB, MAIL).
Daggerfall
Leisure suit Larry collection (mine has all, even 7 on it)
Civilization II
Theme Park (don't ask :) )

If I don't have net access, I would take instead of UO..... something
long... errr,
I have recorded a CD with tens (almost, if not, a hundred), with MANY RPGs
(all Ultimas (including underworlds, Runes of Virtues 1&2, WOU)s
, MM1->5, Dungeon Masters, SSI Goldboxes, And a lot of emulated stuff on
SNES,
NES, APPLE II, C64. This CD comes with KQ1-6, LSL1-6, SQ1-5 (i bought the
three
collections for cheap), and tens of other RPGs (lands of lore, dungeon hack,
Eye of the beholder 1,2,3 etc. etc...), it also has a N64 emulator withs
roms of Zelda64
, Mario 64, and Goldeneye. It has FF1->6, Zelda 1->3, and a lot of other
consoles rpgs.

No... I would take that one anyone, let's get rid of LSL7.

(and instead of UO....... something to make my own games maybe ? If I can't
I would
take... Virtual Pool !)
