My favorite is custom level, v=20, h=30, m=100.
Try it, its quite the challenge.
My best time is 424 s.

I believe this happen when you make the alrgest board possible and have ten
mines.

Or maybe the guy did it on the LEVEL easy. Is that what you meant? I'm
pretty sure it's imposible to do it in one second. But if you get the

Actually, the Washington Post had an article about this very thing
last week.

World Record (all from memory) at easy level was 1 second (supposedly,
if they are set up JUST right, clicking on one square will clear the
board).

Bill Gates' personal best on easy (MS is his fave game) is 3 seconds.

World record at intermediate is 27 seconds (I got excited when I saw
that - I said "HEY, my record is 26!!" Then I looked, nope, my record
is *126* :>)

your friend just might have the record on expert (I think the stated
was somewhere in the 90's - not sure though)

I'm sorry, but I can't resist answering this question, why???
Because I AM a minor expert in the subject.

Andrew Krenz (uzn...@mcl.ucsb.edu) wrote:
: Who has the best time playing expert level in Windows Minesweeper?
I don't wish to sound like an asshole/moron, but *I* do!

I have the Worlds fastest time! I'll show you...

: I've done it in 113 seconds myself, but a friend of mine is god at

: playing that game. He's done expert level in 78 seconds. Has anyone
: topped that?

NO problem Here are my times:
On a 386 clone:

Beginner: 1 Second
Intermediate: 2 Seconds
Expert: 4 Seconds
( I think I have 2 seconds on the Expert level, but I can't
reproduce it right now, Give me a couple of days first...)

Oh, and BTW, I CAN reproduce these results in just a few
seconds no problem!

Now, some... no... all of you are probably wondering how I did
it?? Well, I cheated! I use a program I wrote called MineCheat, that
will solve the game in just a few seconds. For those of you who want
to try it out yourself it's on THE windows FTP site, cica:
ftp.cica.indiana.edu:/pub/pc/win3/games/mcheat.zip
Also look for a good tool called minehelp.zip in the same directory.

Now, the next question you might ask is:
"If you've been giving this program out to other people, then why
dosen't someone else ( with a faster computer ) have a better time?"
Well: I have since then made another version of the program
that is optimized, and runs much faster, often producing times that
are 1-2 seconds faster. And I'm the only person who has this new
program, so there!

( I will admit that the source code is also avaiable with the program,
so it is possible that someone else has made a faster version, but I
doubt it! )

A couple of us here were playing custom (22 x 30 x 149).

Best score is 228.

In normal ones, scores are 8, 45 and 139.

Don't believe in other player's times. It's possible to solve the
expert level in less than 20 seconds if there is another program
running on the machine. If I start a (rather bad) raytracer in fast
mode, I'm able to click on 20 fields while waiting for the next
"second" to start :-)

BTW, I'm running a i486/33 with 20MB RAM.

Greetings,
UST

Play beginner long enough and you should be able to do it in one second. All you need is a set-up revealed by one hit. Of course you could edit the times to whatever you want. Minesweeper requires skill but, without cheating, you need luck to get out the expert level.

Change your wallpaper/background to black (or dark). Pull up your
"Games" group. Click on the MineSweeper icon, and IMMEDIATELY hit
XYZZYReturnShift, in that order, one at a time. Now watch the upper
left-hand corner of your screen while pointing the cursor at different
squares on the board. A white PIXEL means a 'safe' square. If the pixel
goes dark, there is a mine beneath it. Now see how fast your times are.
It's all really easy when you cheat, ain't it?

I knew that trick a long time ago. I've tried it many times, but I've
never been able to beat my best (non-cheating) time of 161 seconds
on Expert mode.

It seems like having to look in the corner all the time slows down
your total playing time.

I don't play games that often, but doesn't the game resize ? My best time for
the 10x10 game is 9 seconds, but I just fired rapidly and randomly
for a second or two and figured the rest. But I guess it was mostly luck!

The fastest time? Well, that's nice for the ego, but I claim it's no
real measure of skill but more of luck. How about the following: given
that your first click isn't a mine, then
a) what is your average time
b) what is your success rate
c) in the long run, is your average time decreasing
d) what is your worst time since you've been at your current skill level
Cheaters need not reply.

By the way: I can always finish a game in nine clicks. 'Course the cool

Hmmm. I would've said that you don't have enough memory, but you
described your computer as "fully-loaded", so I'm not sure that's the
problem. It could have something to do with your serial mouse interface.

A nit: The FIRST square is never a mine. Call it a feature, I don't know
why it was implemented that way. Start from the second square clicked...

|> a) what is your average time

When I finish, it's usually in about 120 seconds or less (Expert, without
marking the flags w/ the right mouse button)

About 15-20 percent, once I've opened up a large area. About 1/3 of my games
abort before getting to this stage.

Yes, albeit slowly

|> d) what is your worst time since you've been at your current skill level

~160 seconds, the mouse needed cleaning.

The xyzzy cheat slows you down once you reach a certain skill plateau, but
