Thanks for this Graeme ... but for future reference it's usually
considered good form to trim the original URL in case someone misses
your note and clicks on it. The original has now been cancelled.

If you have the original, and the headers, may I suggest you contact
the individual's ISP and have his account terminated?

Who the hell needs to be told that? Only a blithering idiot grabs
anonymous files off websites from newsgroup referrals.

Oy, being new doesn't equal being brain dead, which is what you'd have
to be to blindly download an executable from a website. And if they
are silly enough to run around downloading files, et al, without ever
taking the time to learn even the most basic precautions, then they
deserve what they get.

I generally agree with ya on the idea of "screw them, they should know
better" Quatoria but I usually end up having to go explain to these people
what happened and have to spend time fixing their oh so nice gateway, NEC,
compaq, packard bell systems. So, its nice to see a heads up, even though I
think a lot of "newbies" are too stupid to realize what they are doing.

Is it necessary to call them stupid? Since when does being naive
equate with being stupid? Show some compassione people. Especially you
Quottoria.

For the millions upon millions of people out there who are not brain dead,
being new to computers is a whole new world which they know nothing of,
including the situation of viruses and the like.

There are always novice users about so don't be some damn egotistical.
Putting up a virus warning helps the new and does not harm the experienced,
expect when dingbats like you are about.

I didn't call newbies stupid. I said I have no pity for people who ARE

It's not *their* fault. Do you blame people for being born mentally

Retardation doesn't equal stupidity. Stupidity is a choice. Barring
physiological aberration, I believe everyone has an inherently equal
ability to be bright or imbecilic, though that's unfortunately
influenced by their parents actions in nurturing them or not. I have
never, however, met a stupid person who hadn't chosen it. So, no, I
don't pity them at all. If someone thinks its cool to go through life
dumb as a post, without learning anything more then a variety of fun
places on the body that can be used for crushing beer cans, I have
absolutely no sympathy for them whatsoever.

Well, it's been my observation in life that while a person may appear
stupid in one aspect (computers, math for example) they may be very
talented in other areas. You may suggest someonne is stupid because
they are computer illiterate they may well be very smart in other
areas. Just my opinion.

I think the *benefits* of being stupid and ugly are not widely enough
appreciated. For instance, the stupid are too ignorant to realise they'll
always be poor - in fact, they're so stupid they think they won't be,
because they play the lottery and actually think they could win. How stupid
is that? Fortunately the really stupid don't realise that lotteries are a
tax on stupidity.

They're also too stupid to realise they're unhappy. When did you ever meet
a stupid, viscerally unhappy person? Exactly! In my experience the stupid
are usually very cheerful, the stupid bastards.

Ugly is good too. You'll never be disappointed at the unattractive partner
you end up with, or at the failure of your relationships for that matter,
because you're so ugly you figure you're lucky to get what little you got.

I know whereof I speak although ideally I'd like to be more stupid, for the
reasons given.

Exactly! I tell my friends all the time "you're going to pay the stupid
tax" when they say they're going to go get a lottery ticket. Funny
thing is, they agree with me!

I have to agree. Most people I meet who do stupid things merely haven't
taken the
time to learn what the heck they're doing, rather than just believing they
can do it and going
ahead (and making a mess!)
Ignorance may have been justifiable (at least in the US) once, when access
to information was limited (local libraries and people mostly); now with the
Internet and the
vast array of help books on practically any subject, there is no excuse for
ignorance
at all. (I do speak for citizens of the US - tho I imagine it's not really
too different elsewhere.)

True, but stupidity usually refers to someone not bothering to find the
answers before
they apply them. Also known as 'Common Sense, Exercise thereof'

OK, we are talking about two different things here. I'm talking about
those kids in school who were ridiculed by their peers because they
didn't do too well. Some of them have learning disabilities that is of
no fault of their own. We can only do the best with which we are
given. Some people may be genius level at certain things, but still
lack common sense. The two are not relative.
