Can anyone recommend any Windows 95 submarine games? (I don't want
a DOS or Windows 3.1 game ...) In case it matters, I have a 486/33 which according to
WinTune is slow for a 33, and 16MB RAM, so the game shouldn't depend on
a super-quick machine to render its graphics.

I used to have Silent Service for DOS a few years ago. It was pretty
good in most aspects, but I found it distracting to have to use
the keyboard so much instead of the mouse (I never had the time
to memorize all the keys I needed to operate the sub!!!) so any
games which used the mouse or joystick more completely or hopefully
totally would be better for me. (I'm not a hardcore gamer and
am usually tired and just trying to relax for a bit.)

Thanks much for any recommendations.

: Command Aces of the Deep is good. I comes on a CD and even has some
: voice commands.

I've heard a lot of bad reviews about Command AOTD (sluggish, voice
commands not handled very well).

With the 486/33 you say you have, you most likely would be disappointed
with Command:Aces of the Deep for Windows 95. This product is actually
much more sluggish than the DOS version of the same game. It also is
missing at least one feature that the DOS version has. When at periscope
depth and having your periscope up, in the 95 version, you can no longer
select targets or track them in the map mode. The DOS version allows you
to do this, which is what you'd expect. If you can make visual contact,
then there's no reason that the game shouldn't let you see the contacts
on the map or target them. The voice recognition part of the 95 version
will not function at all on your 486/33. Even if it did, it's actually
faster to use the mouse to make your selections. I was very happy with
the DOS version of Aces of the Deep, but the Windows 95 version of the
identical game is an abomination of poor Windows 95 programming and the
greed of a software company rushing a product to sale before it's ready.
I had previously called Dynamix's tech support on why the 95 product
was so slow and was missing that feature. They gave me a song and dance
about how Microsoft didn't have their games programming libraries available
when they were developing the 95 version of this game. Personally I think
these dorks should have known better to go ahead with development when
they knew ahead of time that they didn't have the right tools to do it
with. All they did was ruin Aces of the Deep.
