Hi.

I'm new to the pc and by the sound of it, the Il 2 games are excellent, so
I thought I'd give it a try.

A question, is the 1946 edition basically the original with lots of
follow-ups included, or have they refined the engine, detail levels etc?

I assume as a beginner the 1946 edition is the one to go for though?

And is landing as tricky as in the original Falcon? :)

All the best,

Angus - 1946 is an excellent WWII sim, the best out there right now
for both online (actually for online it is heads and shoulders above
ANY other WWII sim IMO) and offline. On full realism it isn't easy and
in some ways can compare to F4. For online get a copy of Hyperlobby or
find one of the many online squadrons out there. They welcome
beginners and will help you over the hump.

Enjoy!

It's an enhanced engine from the original IL-2.

When 'IL-2 Forgotten Battles' came out, it came with an updated graphics
engine from the original IL-2.

IL-2 1946 is basically IL-2 Forgotten Battles + all the addons released
since then. It's the definate edition, as long as you patch it up to
version 4.08. Version 4.09 is being worked on and will be released when
it is read. The patches also includes new stuff like multiplayer maps
and flyable airplanes.

Also included is Pacific Fighters. Speaking about landing....landing
on an aircraft carrier at night with heavy crosswind and rain with a
damaged airplane is a piece of cake...honest! :)

Cheers!

Gents, thanks for the advice. I will have to pick up a copy soon. From
what I've read there is a Battle of Britain game coming from the same
company. Googling around it seems like that has been in the "real soon
now" stage for a couple of years - is there any firm idea of when it will
actually appear?

Thanks again.

If your luck is like mine it will come out two weeks after you buy IL2
1946... ;-)

I don't really mind that - I'd probably wait a bit before buying it
anyway, but I've been on holiday here in the UK for the last week, and not
seen a copy of Il 2 Sturmanov 1946 anywahere - now that I've decided to
buy it. Typical! :)

I got it a couple of weeks ago from a Playtrade seller on Play.com for about 7. It
arrived the next day (unlike the time Play's stuff usually takes).

Have you tried Game? I know I've said how I don't like them but I got
mine in a two-for deal together with Falcon 4.0 Allied Force a year or
so ago.

That sounds like a tempting combination - I was a big fan of the original
Falcon games on my Miggy. :)

I will check the Salisbury or Bristol Game this Saturday.

Not sure if the deal's still running, but I think I saw a copy of IL2
1946 in the Durham branch of Game a couple of weeks back. Note that
there are no refunds of PC titles and that they /don't/ tell you this
when you buy - or have that info in notices.

By the way, if you do the RAF Singapore campaign DON'T choose the
Hurricane - virtually all of the missions are a long way from base and
in most cases you can't do the mission without falling out of the sky
on the way back or having to try to land at an alternative friendly
airport.

Squadron mates will always try to get back to the home airport and
crash when they inevitably run out of fuel - there's no 'follow me and
land here' command.

IIRC, the Brewster Buffalo has much longer range and may be a better
choice.

HTH.

Probably, but I'm not on broadband at the moment and already own the
game. GOG is download-only isn't it?

I doubt the GOG version will have the extra content on the second DVD
that came with the physical version but in terms of paper
documentation there's no difference as you just got the discs.
