Hi all.

Me and some friends will have a small LAN-party soon. This party we want to
play something easy and different (from F4)so we're looking for a simple
dogfighting sim, preferably propeller planes. We remember a MP (back in the
Amiga days) game that had prop planes and was a basic dogfighting game. The
"terrain" had gigantic letters you could fly in and out through, hiding from
each other. Like a big "A". That simple, dumb kind of stuff...

We would appreciate it if we could get some good advice on what to buy!

TIA
/T

Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2 would be ok.
Can download add-ons for it as well or there are commercial add-ons that can
be purchased for it to add new planes/scenery etc.

There are plenty of other older ones as well you may like to consider.

European Air War comes to mind a a good multiplayer sim.

Crimson Skies, not a "sim" as such, but very easy and different.

Take a look at Crimson Skies. Some of the multiplayer maps have great
obstacle courses. The flight models are very forgiving so it's not exactly a
"sim" but it is a lot of fun to play against other people.

See if you can find A10 Cuba. Very easy to fly, absolutely great physics and
tremendous to play MP because of all the ridiculous stunts you could pull.
Also it had a couple of "fantasy" arenas with exactly the sort of thing you
describe - huge towers in the sky etc.

Another would be Jane's Fighter's Anthology but then again FA has problems
running on anything newer than Win98. Airbase Attack mode is great though.
Four people get one airbase a piece and a set number of aircraft. You have
to bomb each others airbases and/or defend your own with fighters. If you
run out of planes then you drive and fire a AAA unit on the ground until you
are dead. You get a choice of over 100 planes to choose from your arsenal
five or six planes each if I remember. I do wish somebody would make an
updated 3D version of FA. I would buy it in a heart beat.

Cheap and fun multiplayer can be found by downloading Hitech Creations 'Aces
High' as you may or may not know its a WW2 online flight sim. As wel las the
subscription based play (400+ player arenas) you can play it head to head
with up to 8 players over a LAN. It's a 22MB download and has a seletion of
40 or so planes to fly and you can setup the arena to your exact tastes with
many configurable options. It also has player controllable ground units such
as panzer tanks and M16 ack wagons for a bit of fun you could get a friend
to be 'it' and see how many planes he can knock out before he is killed. It
has 13 different terrains to download ranging from fantasy maps to ones
based on real locations and you can also download a map editor. You can
download it by visiting the Hitech Creations site:
http://www.hitechcreations.com/

The main files you will need are:
http://downloads.hitechcreations.com/AH1086.EXE - Latest version v1.08 p6
(22MB)
http://downloads.hitechcreations.com/AHHELP.EXE - Aces High help file

Optional files such as the different maps and terrain editor can be found
here: http://www.hitechcreations.com/cgi-bin/frames.pl?page=download

Hope this helps

You may want to turn down the flight model realism on both though
(although they aren't real hard to fly).

Because AH is a bitch to fly if you don't know what you're doing. I don;t
think there is a way to "dumb down" the flight model.

It's no different to any other WW2 flight sim I've played and it has a
comprehensive help file which explains every facet of the game.

And just like Big Jim says, you can't dumb down the physics other than
auto-takeoff and tracers.

Turning off tracers makes it more difficult for gunenry so that is hardly
dumbing it down although why you'd want to dumb it down is beyond me.
Torsten Jonsson quite clearly stated "so we're looking for a simple
dogfighting sim, preferably propeller planes" so I suggested Aces High. It's
simple enough for my eight year old nephew to play all by himself, its a
prop plane dogfighting game. Seems Aces High just about covered his remit
for such a LAN game.

I haven't been following Aces High for some time, but the last time I
looked at it, it required you to connect to their server for a max of
8 player h2h network. Have they released a server version for private
lan play?

Yes they have! I was surprised to find that out myself!
Not only can aircraft fly in 8 player LAN, I believe the vehicles are there
as well.

Latest version does allow 8 player over a LAN and also still host over net
as well as before.

I dunno Revvin, the main word in the title I noticed was 'simple'. ;)
