Just a quick survey:

What do you consider to be the greatest sim of all time (so far, naturally).
No need to weigh up the pros and cons of dynamic campaigns, terrain masking
and priority fire zones. Just a gut reaction, what's the best fun you've had
with your joystick?

My vote: EAW for it's unending ability to surprise me and make me smile with
the little details.

WarBirds

There is really nothing like participating in their historic scenarios. A
box of 15 B17s flying in flak over Hamburg. 12 P-38s on close escort and 20
P-51s on sweep - opposed by 40 Me-109s, 110s and FW-190s. All flown by
real people. Awesome immersion.

F15 if they offered some better terrain and higher resolutions. But for now
Falcon 4 takes the cakew with LB2 bringing up the rear.

Of all the sims I have ever owned a version of Warbirds has ALWAYS been on
my HD for the last 4 years out-living the best of them,
F3,Tornado,LB,LB2,F15,F4,A10 Cuba etc etc etc I know not everyone wants to
pay to play online but you do get what you pay for in Warbirds and thats a
top notch sim with huge multiplayer aspect.

Janes F-15 or WW2F. A toss up. Had my favorite stick time with both.

Of course this isn't really fair since every year the sims get better
graphics, sounds, AI, and flight models. But that aside, the Janes LB2 is
the undisputed heli sim and I'd have to vote on f-15 or even good old USNF
as the best combat flight sim.

Now just for reference, the best series of flight sims ever (in my opinion)
was the Wing Commander outerspace sims. When it first came out, I upgraded
my 286 to play it. When secret ops came out with the first digitized
speech, I got a 386 with a SoundBlaster...etc.....etc.....etc....Pentium II,
voodoo banshee....etc...etc....

I got so addicted I played till my hands cramped up, I had dreams of the
characters in the story line as if they were real people. Hell I was even
known to put on my motorcycle helmet to play a couple missions on those cold
late nights......

Now what game has had YOU that wrapped up....That's how I define the best
games....what makes it hard to sleep, work ,etc.

..or maybe I'm just a nutcase.

Ah, yes... When I first saw the original WC I felt like I had witnessed the
second coming. I knew it was something truly revolutionary. I think WC and
Wolfenstein between them are solely responsible for the PC gaming
revolution.

Yes I agree. I think most longtime PC Gamers can think back and remember
what game it was that made them upgrade. I had WC with my 286. When WC2
came out, it only worked on a 386 so that was why I upgrade. Same thing
goes for when WC3 came out: 486. I still think WC3 was the best of all them
with the best scene being towards the end where you had to choose which girl
you wanted. I wish is what like that in real life!!!

The ultimate flight sim of course. Wouldn't you like to have that sitting

My vote is for Falcon 4. Falcon 3 was more amazing for its time.

By that Criteria, Gunship 2000 did that for me. :) Rushed home from work
every single day to put about 8 more hours into that one. *ggg*

Falcon3 and F-15 SEIII were a close second.

Yup, I agree about F3. I dunno. I just don't seem to get as wrapped up in
the sims as I did back then. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the hell out of
them, but I rarely feel myself getting as engrossed as then. Perhaps it was
just the "newness" of the whole technology that contributed to it. Or,
maybe I'm just older now with a wife and 2 kids. *chuckle*

I cant believe yall ran wc3 on a 486, I remember I had a p166!!!! at that
time and it rocked. Thats the same comp I ran WC4 on, it was great then.
Encoded for my dolby pro logic system, looked and sounded great. I'm still
waitin for WC5 not this prophecy mess. That was lame compared to the
others. I still remember the line "when your being chased by a junkyard dog
turn around and kick him in the chops" from WC4 I think. Great game/movie.

No question, ATF. It was easy to learn, hard at times, and I loved playing
modem to modem with a friend of mine. Oh yeah, plus the mission editor and
the huge fights that'd you take part of. (Hehe pluss the special mission

Regarding the earlier post. You're right about the mood factor. The latest
sims jus dont have the right feel as the others. Maybe its the sense of speed,
or the newer graphics, but the new sims dont seem quite as "AWEsom" in the true
sense of the word. The sensation of flying has sort of left them. However, I
find the same mood I used to have in the newer FPS games like R6 or EW. Those
really scare the mess outta me sometimes. F15 used to give me this feeling
occasionally when the golden bbs flew up around you. I really loved those
strikes against heavily defended hard targets. oooh. They scared the bejeezus
outta me.....

Hi,
I own four at the moment. The old one that I don't even keep installed
is Microsoft for windows 95. Then it is one I really like F22 ADF that was
the best but Jetfighter 3 had the Carrier based parts that were inviting but
since Falcon4.0 came on the scene it has been without fail the winner. Janes
F15 didn't measure up to my expectations with all the resources it used. One
other noteworthy sim was Back To Bagdad that had some great realism.

Whoa Si, this may get long <ggg.>
I remember the old days when sims were wire frame, all done in hexadecimal
or early DOS. Then the 386 and 486 helped, but two seminal moments changed my
world- The release of the original DOS EF2000, and the release of the original
Orchid 3dfx card. I was traveling a number of months later in London, and picked
up the Tactcom add-on to EF2000. This made the Voodoo come alive. Remember the
stink when it wasn't available in the states? About the same time the patch was
released for not only TactCom, but JetFighter3 and Flying Corps too. I think
fondly of the parade of folks that came to my house to see the serial number 43
Orchid Voodoo 1 card running in 3d acceleration. At that time, nobody else in
the state had one. Many folks actually got motion sickness, having never seen a
3d card in action. I ended up buying stock in the company at the IPO and doing
very well.
Now this kind of gear is so cheap, but remember when RAM cost an arm and a
leg. I think the industry turned the corner with the P1/166, pricey for the
time, but it was the first pro truly able to run 3D apps with a V1 Orchid card.
And cost to match, like three big for a P1/166 with 64M RAM. Then came the jump
to the P2/300, and it too was hot for awhile <ggg.> Seems like nowadays, my 464
with 256M PC100 RAM and 40M video RAM is getting long in the tooth <ggg.> Well,
time to upgrade, at least this one lasted a year. All the best, Mike
P.S. My vote goes to EAW, sim of the Century. F4 isn't bad, but just doesn't
have the immersiveness of EAW.

I've been waiting for someone to mention 1942 Pacific Air War - BUT it
looks like I'll have to do it myself.

It Features flying off carriers , doing torpedo and dive bombing runs,
acting as rear gunner in bombers,
mission builder , digitised speech, a believable flight model, a HEAP of
included missions.

I still keep a SB16 and CH speed adjustable joy card in my 366Mhz machine
(along with an early model Diamond PCI sound for Win games) just to play
1942PAW.

Please will some developers make a new WW2 Pacific theatre prop sim - Do we

The sim that really got me first was a very long time ago. Battle of Britian
(BOB) was my first flight sim love. Only sim I ever played more than that one
is F3. F3 made the biggest impact of any sim in history and I perhaps had more
fun with F3 than anything else, but Longbow 2 is clearly the finest piece of
flight sim software ever made IMHO.

Nothing has ever been made with so many features and with so little bugs and
also included the fluff stuff for icing on the cake. Longbow 2 is the best sim
ever made IMHO.

A follower of the "True Path." Of course "1942: The Pacific Air War" is
the best sim *so far*. It has everything I look for in a simulation.
Unfortunately, the "definitive" version (Gold) is hard to get. Also,
you have to patch it to fix the poor AI and add surface actions to the
naval battles. But with these improvements! I wasted a large chunk of
my life on this baby-- and I'd do it again! The only thing I never was
able to do was win the Medal of Honor. I got the Japanese version,
though. Shot down 6 P-39's (wiry little bastards) in a George. With
the patched AI, that is no mean feat.

Tremendous sim. Demanding, diverse missions, and plenty of the elusive
"playability" that makes the difference between a merely competent
simulation and one that you can't tear yourself away from.

This will peg my experience (or obvious lack thereof) with flight sims:
EF2000. My buddy and I would play the campaign, networked, for hours and
have a total blast. Of course, it took something like 30 minutes to load a
networked campaign mission so the beer might have had something to do with
it. I remember the seemingly very narrow runways as being a real challenge
as well as the excellent musical score while you were flying. I actually
miss playing it. Just my 2 cents. :-)

Still no one's gonna mention the Best COMBAT Sim of ALL Time? Lest we
forget, the venerable Chuck Yeager's Air Combat.
Take out all the eye-candy from all the newer sims, it still wouldn't
compare to CYAC in my book. Pure combat, nothing else. Where can you
find 3 eras of pure dogfighting and the most persistent AI pilots? This
game modelled WWII (like in EAW, MSCFS, SDOE to you eye-candy lovers),
Korean War (like in Mig Alley, Sabre Ace), and the Vietnam War (like in
Flight of the Intruder, and a segment of Fighters anthology)
It was always gut-wrenching to mix it up with the Abbeville boys, the
Russian Mig-15 instructors, and Colonel Tomb in one game. Here's to
CYAC.

It's tough, but I'd place the popular helo sims at the top. The original
Gunship, and then the Longbow series, with LB2 nearly reaching perfection.

Too many similarities and competition between the fixed wing sims.

I'll vote for the original Gunship too....that sim was so immersive, I spent
hours and hours flying that helo......as much as I enjoy Longbow and LB2
neither seem as immersive as the orginal Gunship did. Of course I was only 16

Yeah, I remember the first time going into a dive in a mustang after a low
altitude German fighter. My control surfaces locked up and there was an
audible sound indicating my lethal airspeed. I shot right passed the fighter
pulling on my joystick the whole time. Slamming into the daisies.
I had never flown a sim that modeled that feeling so well. In fact if I
remember correctly you could actually have your plane break apart at critical
air speeds.
I remember flying the small Migs against the F86 Saber. The controls where
bouncy but it had a tighter turn radius, getting a kill required patience .
The differences between flight models was the best I had ever come across.
I am sure there are plenty of people here who can relate to the feeling this
sim delivered. With updated graphics it might still hold up by today's
standards. A definite classic.

For me, in my limited experience of sims, it would have to be a very close
choice between Microprose's F19 Stealth Fighter, and Gunship 2000. These
sims were the first that really got me hooked, and spent months playing
nothing but them the moment I got back from school. I can still remember
flying the Stealth Fighter, and the stealth instincts that I picked up
(flying low, not showing the broad side of your wings) keep on
subconsciously appearing when I fly my new gem, Falcon 4.0. It also had the
Officer's bar at the end of every mission, which gave you a human style view
to your performance.

So, my penny to F-19 then.

Warbirds, hands down. Since I've gotten into this sim,
all my others (F-15, Longbow, F4) have been feeling awefully
neglected. I'm just surprised I didn't discover WB much earlier.
I practiced offline a lot, and then the first time I was in the
arena and saw approaching planes, my heartrate went through the
roof. It was a pair of Spits. I'm a sim vet and I thought I was
good, but in no sim was I ever so unceremoniously (and quickly)
shredded. It was quite a shock. And it kept on happening - again
and again. Many hours later (many dollars, too) I am finally at
the satisfying point where I'm about as dangerous to others as they
are to me.

I agree completely. One of the sim producers should put out this sim
updated to today's technology and a few of modern fighters. Would be a
best seller.
How about it Janes/EA? You have the copyright.

Seeing your post has reminded me of the many, many hours I spent
flying this on a mate's PC while he was at work (I also did terrible
things to his Railroad Tycoon empire, but that's a different story :-).
F-19 softened me up so that when I saw Previews for Tornado I *had* to
buy a PC of my own.

So while I'm tempted to say Flanker or Tornado, F-19 deserves a lot of
credit for getting me into PC sims in the 1st place.

That truly is a great sim. I remember having a ME109 on my tail
once and I was puffing smoke. I cut the throttle, lowered the flaps,
dropped the gear, and slowed way down. That ME109 blew right by me; I
turned for home.

Doing the campaign was fun. Finsihing once before being able to start
another was addictive, almost like a strategy game. Although obviously
scripted, it was great fun.

The missions absolutely rocked too. I remember the "Ace in a Day"
mission where Chuck shot down 5 planes in a day. I think the
mission was like 6 ME109's or someting just circling waiting for some
bombers. Chuck drooped right and shot 5 down in a matter of moments.

For some reason I also remember setting up me against 9 Yak 9's at ace
level and shooting down as many as I could. There was just something
about that game. It was a satisfying feeling to line up another plane
and shoot it up. Almost the same feeling I get when popping those
little packing bubbles between my fingers.

And the best part - It screamed on my 386SX16!! WOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

At last, someone with some sense... yes ,it was Red
Baron folks!

1) A true dogfighting sim, afterall it's supposed to be
a "FLIGHT"sim, not a weapon managment sim.

2) Classy all throughout, from the shading effects of the
cockpit panels to the excellent pounding sounds of the
machine guns (virtual force-feedback)... to the classy
manual, to it's unique sense of flight. Much of it's
features were ahead of it's time, by years.

3) It's graphics engine was so good that it was
still being used to produce games as far out as four
years past it's release. Graphically, RB itself remained
near the cutting edge for years, which is almost unheard
of these days.

And also, it had that something: the whole being greater
than the sum of it's parts. It is THE flight sim classic
of all time, other notables pale in comparison.

Falcon 3.0

Tough choice, but since the catagory is "Greatest Combat sim of ALL time", I'd
have to vote for F3 because it was so FAR ahead of it's time.

F3 had ACMI, plus coop multiplayer, plus a multi-aircraft environment (F-16 +
Mig-29 +F-18 Hornet), plus great add-on theatres with cool new vehicles,
plus a realistic flight model, plus realistic avionics, etc., etc., etc. Over
the years, with each new patch, F3 was an investment that shaped up nicely in
the end and then continued to give back far more than it took. It looks like
F4 is doing the same thing too.

I would NOT still play F3 today, because you just can't go that far back and
enjoy it very much anymore. But for it's day, it was LIGHTYEARS ahead of it's
time, and as such, probably deserves the title "Greatest Combat Sim of all
time". I played it almost daily for 1.5 years and then continues less
frequently for a few years after that.

Other sims which, in my book, deserve 2nd & 3rd place include:

EF2000 - Awesome coop dynamic campaigns on a LAN
LB2 - Awesome coop dynamic campaigns on the INTERNET

The most fun I have had with a simulation would have to be a toss-up
between Secret Weapons Of The Luftwaffe, European Air War, Longbow 2.

From reading Ed Bain's comments I would predict Mig Alley might
overtake these simulations.

To this day I STILL think it had without a doubt THE most realistic gun
graphics/tracer graphics I've ever seen. Including damage to the enemy AC. I
thought at the time 'wow, they finally got that right, at least now all sims
will have realistic tracer representation'. HAH! Even my beloved EAW and to my
utmost surprise SDOE doesn't portray it very realistically.....

IMHO of course...
