How can I add the Citabria 7ECA and Aeronca Champ taildraggers to the
MS FS2002 program?

A few years ago, I bought microsoft flight simulator 2002 for the
express purpose of learning more about these two tail draggers but my
MSFS2002 only contained the Cessna 172SP Skyhawk, the Cessna C182RG &
C182S Skylane, the Cessna C208 Caravan Amphibian, the Extra 300S, etc.

I like sitting up front, instructor behind, with nobody to my left or
right to obscure my view. And I like the fact that once you learn to
fly the Citabria or Aeronca tail draggers, the rest of the fleet come
easier. It's somewhat akin to learning to ride first the Harley Road
Glide Screamin' Eagle as your initial bike ... if you learn that ...
your Honda 250 will be a piece of cake.

The problem is my Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002 is gathering dust
(because it has no tail draggers) but a friend recently suggested
there is a way to add specific airplanes.

I'm not very MSFS 2002 literate so I ask you, the experts, how I would
go about adding the Citabria 7ECA and Aeronca Champ taildragger
airplane to MS FS 2002.

Try a google search. Or check out one of the many websites devoted to FS downloads. www.avsim.com comes to mind.

Since I have never heard of either of those aircraft, I dunno.

Yup! But that does not mean that FS2002 does not handle taildraggers.
It does.

Right up to the first corner....then....good luck!

It is possible to "roll your own" aircraft, but way beyond my technical
knowledge to explain how to do it.

The hint that I think you might be looking for, would be to go to some
of the FS sites, like Avsim, and search their libraries. There are
many add-on aircraft available for download. Quite a few of which are,
in fact, tail draggers.

Try http://www.avsim.com/ go to file library, search the FS2002,
Original Aircraft....and don't bother looking for the Citabria, but you
should find the Aeronca.

There are many websites that have thousands of planes for free download. The
main ones would have to be
www.flightsim.com (Look for the filename 7accha1.zip which is an Aeronca
champ)
www.simviation.com and www.avsim.com .
I have found that mostly the same planes can be found on the three sites
They all have search facilities so just try to find your planes. The better
quality planes should have installation instructions. If you find several
versions of the same plane.go for the one with the biggest file size.It
usually means a more detailed plane

Beware though, once you see the range of planes available, you can't just stop
at two and will end up with hundreds

Better yet, find a club or local owner of one of them and buy yourself a
ride! You can loop a Citabria in FS, but it you look straight up while
doing it, you're still just looking at your own ceiling tiles...

Thanks to your helpful advice, I wrote this step by step how to which
others can follow which shows what I attempted in order to install a
Citabria or Aeronca taildragging airplane into Microsoft Flight
Simulator 2002 (sans the cub sound):

ONE DOZEN STEPS TO INSTALL A CITABRIA or AERONCA TAILDRAGGER INTO
MSFS2002:
1. Note the three main flight simulator add-on download sites:
http://www.avsim.com
http://www.flightsim.com
http://www.simviation.com
And, pick one, e.g., simviation & read their instructions, e.g.:
http://www.simviation.com/acinstall.htm
2. Open up the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002 folder on your
computer:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Fs2002\aircraft
Note the installed aircraft & the four sub-folders for each
aircraft:
model, panel, sound, Texture
3. Create a new directory for flight-simulator downloads, e.g.:
mkdir C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Games\Fs2002\downloads\citabria_7eca
mkdir C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Games\Fs2002\downloads\aeronca_champ
4. Search for the desired airplane on the chosen web site:
http://www.simviation.com/search.html
I searched for "Citabria" and failed to find this
taildragger.
I then searched for "Aeronca Champion" & found the link
below.
5. Go to that Aeronca link & choose the largest of the available
downloads:
http://www.simviation.com/fs2002props31.htm
FS2002 1946 Aeronca 7AC Champion
This FSDSv2 project includes moving parts including rolling
wheels, transparent textures (not reflective) and a pilot
figure.
A panel based on a photo is included. By Paul Clawson
(464K).
ftp://63.217.28.218/1props/Champv2.zip
6. Save the 464K zip file into your MS Flight Simulator download
directory:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Fs2002\downloads\aeronca_champ
7. Extract the contents of that that zip file into the new download
directory:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Fs2002\downloads\aeronca_champ\
Aeronca Champion\{model,panel,sound,texture,Aircraft.cfg,Aeronca
7AC.air}
gauges\*.gau
champ.jpg
Readme.txt
8. As always, read the fine instructions:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Games\Fs2002\downloads\aeronca_champ\Readme.txt
9. Copy the entire "Aeronca Champion" folder into the FS2002
"aircraft" folder:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Fs2002\aircraft\Aeronca Champion\
10. Copy the 9 "gauges" files (not the folder!) into the FS2002
"GAUGES" folder:
From:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Games\Fs2002\downloads\aeronca_champ\gauges\*.*
To:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Fs2002\GAUGES\*.*
11. The readme recommends "Aaron Swindle's cub sound cub2x2sn.zip",
but,
I coud not find that file despite Google searches and specific
searches at:
http://www.fsd-international.com (search for "cub2x2sn.zip")
http://www.fscorner.com/sounds.htm (search for "cub2x2sn.zip")
http://www.surclaro.com (search for "cub2x2sn.zip")
http://www.fsfreeware.com/dcd/FS2004/Aircrafts/index-269.html
http://www.flightsimnetwork.com/shigeru/civil.htm
etc.

So, I left this Aeronca Champion taildragger using the default
links
to the Cessna 182 sound file.
12. Start up Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002 & fly the Aeronca 7AC
taildragger!

Bob, you probably won't find that sound set separately any longer.
However, search google.com using the key words:

"Aaron Swindle" & "cub sound"

(exactly as above, quotes and all!) will return 16 places where you can
download an aircraft package that HAS THE SOUNDS INCLUDED... :)

Throw away the aircraft after extracting the sounds if you wish...

I've flown one. I really *like* flying the CITABRIA 7 ECA tailwheel!
But, even after my research (with your help), I still have two questions:

- Does *any* flight simulator software contain a CITABRIA 7 ECA tailwheel?
(it's not in the 3 flight sim sites so we need a real expert's help)

- Where can I obtain MS FS2002 "Aaron Swindle's cub sound cub2x2sn.zip"?
(multiple google searchs can't find it so again we need a real expert)

Hi Bill,

I'm truly sorry. I do realize the posts crossed paths in the night.

The cause of the mixup is that I use google which delays all posts by
3 to 9 hours (they say that as soon as you send in any post).

So, when I responded, your reply was *not* visible to me on Google.
On Google at least, the URL is: http://groups.google.com

Said another way, the URL I used is *not* a USENET NNTP url!
You problably use a newsreader or at least an NNTP URL such as:
news://news/comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.flight-sim
These have a faster response time.
Google is basically a static web page updated every 3 to 9 hours or
so.

I'm sorry if I inadvertantly offended you. I was not intentional.
If I had used an NNTP newsreader; or if I used the NNTP URL, I might
have seen your response (*IF* my nntp server downloaded it in time)
*before* I posted.

As it were, I had used an HTML URL:
http://groups.google.com/groups?group=comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.flight-sim
and, this makes all the posts merely a (nicely searchable) archived
web page.

So, the really good news is that the *next* person *will* get the
response.
But, I'm sorry that my view & response was delayed (by google) by up
to ten hours. This one will also be delayed 3 to 10 hours. So the date
you see is actually a half day or more later than when I actually
submitted the post.

So, as it often happens in Internet-land, our posts crossed paths in
time.

I am truly sorry for the extra posts.

Yes, indeed, you *did* answer how to get the Aaron Swindle Piper Cub
sound.
And, I *do* very much appreciate the help and advice as I am a FS
novice.

I will give *back* in turn, mostly by posting a step by step walk
through.
This, I hope, should help the next computer pilot get up to speed
faster.

We *still* have the main unanswered question:
- Which commercial program supports the Citabria 7 ECA airplane?

I searched (and searched).
I'll ask some of the pilots down at the local airport if they know of
any.

Whatever I find out, if it's useful, I'll let you folks who helped me
know.

The Citabria is just a Champion Decathlon by another name... minor
differences.

One of the best Flight Sim aircraft ever made is RealAir's Super Decathlon
for $25 bucks.

Here is the Citabria that I've flown on occasion:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v101/Dallas52/Decathlon/Citabria.jpg

Here is RealAir's Decathlon:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v101/Dallas52/Decathlon/a_Citabria_FS_b_003.jpg

Remarkable, yes?

Flight Characteristics are nearly identical too.

I don't know if they have a FS2002 version or if the FS9 version will run in
FS2002... but I'd bet it does. If you're serious about this you should
purchase both FS9 and the Super Decathlon.

Thanks to Bill Leaming for the pointer to Aaron Swindle's cub sound;
and thanks to everyone else for the links to Aeronca addins, here
is our updated 12 steps to adding an Aeronca Champion to FS2002.
---------------------Bob Bonda------------------

DOZEN STEPS TO ADD A CITABRIA or AERONCA AIRPLANE INTO MSFS2002:

1. Note the three main flight simulator add-on download sites:
http://www.avsim.com
http://www.flightsim.com
http://www.simviation.com

Pick one, e.g., simviation; then read their instructions, e.g.:
http://www.simviation.com/acinstall.htm

2. View the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002 aircraft folder:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Fs2002\aircraft

Note installed aircraft & four sub-folders for each aircraft:
model, panel, sound, Texture

3. Create a new directory for flight-simulator downloads, e.g.:

C:\downloads\fs2002\citabria_7eca\
C:\downloads\fs2002\aeronca_champion\

4. Search for both desired airplanes on the chosen web site:
http://www.simviation.com/search.html

Note: I failed to find "Citabria" planes in any of these searches.
So I searched for "Aeronca Champion" instead.

The following Aeronca FS2002 link was chosen:
http://www.simviation.com/fs2002props31.htm

Which contained this summary:

"FS2002 1946 Aeronca 7AC Champion
This FSDSv2 project includes moving parts including
rolling wheels, transparent textures (not reflective)
and a pilot figure. A panel based on a photo is included.
By Paul Clawson (464K).

Download this file:
ftp://63.217.28.218/1props/Champv2.zip

Into the newly created download directory:
C:\downloads\fs2002\aeronca_champion\Champv2.zip

5. Extract that compressed zip archive to a temporary location:
FROM:
C:\downloads\fs2002\aeronca_champion\Champv2.zip
TO:
C:\Temp\unzip\fs2002\aeronca_champion\*.*

6. As always, read the fine instructions:
C:\Temp\unzip\fs2002\aeronca_champion\Readme.txt

7. Copy this Aeronica folder into the FS2002 "aircraft" folder:
FROM:
C:\Temp\unzip\fs2002\aeronca_champion\Aeronca Champion
TO:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Fs2002\
aircraft\Aeronca Champion\

8. Copy the Aeronca "gauges" files (not the folder!):
FROM:
C:\Temp\unzip\fs2002\aeronca_champion\gauges\*.*
TO:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Fs2002\GAUGES\*.*

9. Search Google for "Aaron Swindle's cub sound cub2x2sn.zip":
http://www.google.com

Search for (verbatim, with the quotes):

"Aaron Swindle" & "cub sound"

This located a dozen hits (each a complete package), e.g.:
http://www.simviation.com/fs2002props48.htm

Add a StittsPlayboy directory to your download location:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Fs2002\

downloads\StittsPlayboy\

10. Download the FS2002 Stits Playboy SA3A zip file into
that newly created downloads directory:
ftp://63.217.28.218/1props/StittsPlayboy.zip

Extract the 76 files in the zip into a temporary location.
C:\Temp\unzip\Stitts Playboy\

11. Add the Aaron Swindle cub sounds to your Aeronca sound directory:

Save the existing 28 byte "Sound.cfg" Cessna 182 alias (just in case):
FROM:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Fs2002\

aircraft\Aeronca Champion\sound\Sound.cfg
TO:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Fs2002\

aircraft\Aeronca Champion\sound\Copy of Sound.cfg

Copy the Aaron Swindle cub sounds to the Aeronca sound directory:
FROM:
C:\Temp\unzip\Stitts Playboy\sound\*.*
TO:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Fs2002\

aircraft\Aeronca Champion\sound\*.*

12. Fly your new Aeronca 7AC tailwheel airplane on MS FS2002!

Damn Bob. As I read your post it reminded me of a commercial I kep

GUY: You can't fire me cause I quit

BOSS: But I just fired you

GUY: Well I decided to quit last Wednesday

BOSS: Well I decided to fire you last Tuesday

GUY: But now I'm using a cable modem with usenet. It saves time. And
whatever I find out, if it's useful, I let people know. It will save so
much time that I can read this newspaper.

BOSS: It sure will, when can you start?

GUY: I can start now

BOSS: Welcome aboard Guy

> The Citabria is just a Champion Decathlon by another name

I'm (sheepishly) just now beginning to realize that.
Thank you for this fundamental clarifying distinction!
I'm was/am thoroughly confused actually (by all the name changing).

Last week, I had taken a single one-hour stick lesson in a Citabria
7ECA and (after flying over coastal mountains, glancing over at the
Pacific Ocean and the valley at the same time, and watching heavy
flights land all over the city all in one flight), I soon concluded I
wanted first to liesurely learn (slowly, at my pace, *not* at $85/hour
hectic near-miss innaugural flight I had) using Microsoft Flight
Simulator 2002 (and *then* go back to the real world real danger
lessons).

That's why I am searching specifically for the 7ECA Citabria airframe
(the company also flys Aeronca's but I like the newer Citabria 7ECA
airplane better).

The genesis of the classic Citabria 7ECA seems to be something like:
- Around 1947? the Aeronca 7 Champion debued
- Post-war pilots apparently loved this taildragger airframe
- In 1951 the venerable Aeronca design was sold to Champion Aircraft
- Around 1954?, the Champion Traveller 7EC apparently resulted
- Around 1955? the Champion Challenger 7GCB seemed to follow suit
- Later (dunno when?) this morphed into the Champion Citabria 7GCAA
- Some time later (when?) Champion released the Citabria 7GCBC
- In 1970 the Champion designs were sold to the Bellanca Company
- These plans included the Champion 7KCAB under development
- Bellanca first? debued the base Citabria (115cHP Lycoming 0-235)
- Also, the Citabria 7GCAA (apparently) was renamed the Citabria 150
- And, the Citabria 7GCBC was (apparently) renamed the Citabria 150S
- The basic Bellanca Scout (apparently) debued soon thereafter
- In 1974 the Bellanca Citabria 7GCBC (apparently) became the 8GCBC
- The (unsold?) Champion 7KCAB became the Bellanca Decathlon 8KCAB
- The Decathlon 8KCAB morphed to the Super Decathlon (180cHP engine)
- Bellanca (apparently) ended airframe production in 1982
- Champion (apparently) ended airframe production in 1986?
- In 1990, American Champion took apparently bought production rights
- Subsequently American Champion produced the Citabria Aurora 7ECA
- American Champion also produced the Citabria Adventure 7GCAA
- American Champion also shipped the 7GCBC Citabria Explorer 7GCBC
- American Champion apparently makes the Super Decathlon 8KCAB
- American Champion makes the Scout (& the Scout constant-speed prop)

Indeed, in our (very tentative) summary, we can (probably) conclude
the American Champion Super Decathlon & the (desired) American
Champion Citabria Aurora 7ECA may be similar (enough) airplanes from a
computer-generated flight-simulator standpoint.

> One of the best Flight Sim aircraft ever made is RealAir's Super Decathlon

> for $25 bucks. Flight Characteristics are nearly identical too.

Understood. I (now) agree.
I think you are the expert who found the fundamental long-sought
answer (based on previous unanswered posts from others with the same
question) to the perfectly valid question:
- Perfectly Valid Question:
How do I add a Citabria 7ECA airplane to MS FS2002?
- Simple Answer:
Don't. Add the American Champion Super Decathlon instead.
- Fundamental URL:
http://www.realairsimulations.com/msfs-aircraft/decathlon/index.html
- Flying Guide:
http://www.realairsimulations.com/msfs-aircraft/decathlon/Flying%20Guide.pdf
- Basic comparison:
The American Champion Decathlon is (apparently) the flapless,
high performance version of the American Champion Citabria
- Summary Description:
The RealAir "Super Decathlon Package" includes the American
Champion Super Decathlon for Microsoft FS2004, a collection
of supporting documentation which includes a highly detailed
Pilot's Operating Handbook and an illustrated Flying Guide.
- Compatibility Statement:
Microsoft FS2004
- Current Price:
US $25.00
- Delivery Type:
Immediate download link via email
- Download filesize:
21.6 MB

I was (just now) gonna hit the "Buy Now" button but I'm worried about
only one (maybe minor) complication.

I own Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002; yet the RealAir site doesn't
say that this Super Decathlon substitute airplane will work with
MSFS2002. RealAir only seems to support Microsoft Flight Simulator
2004 (based solely on what I see at their web site).

Do experts know if this Decathlon for MSFS2004 will work with
MSFS2002?

Since I "smiled" after my comment, it should be clear I wasn't
"offended" at all, merely speaking TIG (tongue-in-cheek)... :)

I'm not aware of any such model, payware or freeware...

With the current shelf price on FS2004 & the Rebate from MS, the new(er)
sim is nearly free...

Why not simply upgrade the sim platform to fit the model?

There is a fair chance it will run, it's not a complex add-on... but FS2004
subtly changed the flight dynamics engine from FS2002 and it won't fly
exactly the same way. One of the things that make RealAir products great
are their superb flight dynamics and you could miss out on some of the
accuracy.

Also consider RealAir's new Scout... basically the same as their Decathlon
with IFR instruments, flaps and the amphibian model. However the Decathlon
is a bit more like the Citabria.

If your computer is powerful enough for an upgrade to FS2004, get it... it's
cheaper than real flying time. ;-)

There is a freeware Decathlon from a publisher that looks great but Melissa
compared it to the RealAir payware version and said it was quite inferior.

An outfit called FRA Enterprises had the line sometime, possibly
in the '86-'90 gap between Bellanca and American Champion.
The Aeronca was being built before WWII. A version of it was
used as an observer platform during the war.
There was a tricycle-geared model called the 7FC, and instead of
a stick it had a yoke mounted on a stick, with the chains and cables
necessary to make it work.
The American Champion 7ECA is basically the same airframe as the
7A, with strengthened members here and there and 118 hp instead of the
65. Cruise speed went from 85 or so to 110, gross weight went up 530
pounds, and the stall rose a lot, of course, making the airplane a
very fast lander. We have one (used to fly a 7A and a 7EC), and it
keeps you busy. The 7ECA's landing and takeoff distances, as found in
the POH, are nothing but lies. We add about 75% to them to get the
truth.
We recently bought a 7GCBC, which weighs 50 pounds more than the
7ECA (and 150 hp) but has flaps which make it much nicer to land.
Flaps make wheel landings far easier, too.
