7th Guest: Microscope Puzzle

Okay, I have gotten to the microscope puzzle in the "lab". (I'm
talking about the slurping microbe puzzle NOT the telescope word
puzzle).

I understand the goal and the rules. I just can't win! (I was
never good at othello either.) Does anyone have any strategy
tips that I can try?

Also, I heard that I don't really need to solve this puzzle to
advance in the game. Is that true? If so, I may just give up
and skip it...
