Two great games - got some help here from R Gault a few days ago, but still
cant load these games on a P2, 400 mhz machine that has an older, 2mg
trident video card and a creative labs SB 16 sound card. Attempted to get
new drivers for both from creative and trident, made no difference. Running
Win98. Key error message on 11th hour seems to be "unable to open config
file". Setsound program detects sound card (midi and digital) but when
attempting to configure sound, says "unable to locate digital sound". It's
there, at 220, but can't be seen.
Have scoured the newsgroups looking for a fix - am stumped. Seventh Guest a
total write-off. Have obtained beta version 2.42 for 11th hour that allows
it to run under direct X (supposedly).

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried the beta DirectX patch for 7th Guest?

Hi, newbie here.

7th Guest also has a patch made by Trilobyte to use DirectX. You can
find it at http://www.computerhope.com/download/games.htm .

With that patch, the game freezed a bit too often on my computer, so
you may want to save a lot, at least at first.

Re why doesn't it work right in the first place, I'm certainly no
expert, but is your SB16 ISA or Plug and Play? If it's the second,
that may be the cause of the game not recognizing it. If I remember it
right, trying to force the parameters to the installation program
produced that error. (But I may be completely wrong!)

I hope it works!

PS- It's great to have found this NG!

The config files for 11th hour that are user related are
groovie2.ini, dig.ini, and mdi.ini. Dig.ini indicates the digital
sound selection and mdi.ini is the midi selection. These are text
files that can be read in Win98 if they are present in the 11th hour
directory.

If Setsound.exe can not create these files, then the SB16 sound card
software is not correctly installed. First, you must decide whether
the game will be run in a DOS box under Windows or in MSDOS only mode.
If it is the latter, then the autoexec.bat and config.sys files must
have the correct SB16 entries. Nothing should be required to run the
game in a Windows DOS box other than the above .ini files.
