The recent discussion on games featuring FMV has set me thinking back
to the early/mid '90s, when graphical content really began to take off
as a feature of games.

By SVGA, I mean 8-bit colour or higher at 640x480 as opposed to
320x200.

Which game broke the mould in this respect? I'd guess "The 7th Guest",
but I'd be interested to know if there are earlier examples.

The first one I stumbled upon was "Three skulls of the Toltecs", but
since it was done pretty badly (for my taste), the first good examples I
could remember were "Broken Sword I" and "Curse of Monkey Island".

Ity might have been Woodruff and the Schnibble of the Azimuth? But it might
have been one of the Legend games or maybe Sierra (Police Quest 4 maybe?),
can't remember now...

I do believe that was the first Sierra game to utilize sound blaster
technology for speech being made in 1990.

The first game to use soundblaster digitized sounds (not necessarily speech) was
PRINCE OF PERSIA. It was the first game and the reason I upgraded from and
Adlib to a SoundBlaster.

As for the first SPEECH game. that would to to Access and MEAN STREETS using
REAL AUDIO and the PC speaker - first time I every wired my PC speaker to my
stereo.

God I'm old :-(

Nope, sorry. Although it looks really good (at least when it came out)
it was in standard vga (320x200). Might have been the first using 256
colors, though.

Well if mobygames database is correct, the game would be Wonderland

Wonderland shouldn't count since that used the old Infocom
text/map/compass/graphic window format that was then used in games like
Spellcasting 101, 201 and the Gateway 1 and 2 games. They were in fact hi-res
SVGA but your graphics window was maybe 200x200 pixels and the rest was
paragraphs of text. I think 7th Guest is the better nominee I still have that
game and the video tape that came with it showing how they made it using 3D
Studio. Good stuff!

OK, but when the graphics windows is concerned there are better
nominees than the 7th guest which satisfy the condition, see the
mobygames link, e.g. KGB and Amazon Guardians of Eden. Unless of
course you don't allow for the inventory screen and you want full 640
x 480 graphics.
