I've been playing Myst and I'm having problems with the Stoneship Age. For
some reason, I can't find a way out! I've been to the brothers' rooms and
figured out the use of the umbrella and the buttons, but can't turn on the
lights for what I suspect is the escape route. What I was told was to find
a Rose Compass that is hidden somewhere, but the only thing I can find is a
little hologram projector that has a rose morphing into a human skull. Any
hints (subtle or otherwise) would be greatly appreciated.

The compass is in a room all by itself.

A little ways up the stairs from the doors to the bedrooms, there is a
panel to one side with a small (hard to see) red square on it. Click on
it.

Yes, but WHAT DOES THAT COMPASS DO! Every time I hit a button the
lights go off everywhere, and I need to recharge the batteries!

Remember when you go down to the brothers rooms, either one, there are
landing on the way down or up. Well on your way up (can't remember if
first or second landing) there's a little panel. Push this and there you
are, but be very careful, because it is extremely hard to see.

Glad to see that I'm not the only one having problems with
the compass!!!!!

I did see the a diagram of the compass in one of the books
in the library though. I did look like it was pointing to one
of the buttons but that button (and one of the otherside) had
the same effect. I have suspicion that it has something to do with
the 'grinders' beside one of the beds?

You have to push the right button on the compass. It corresponds to a
certain number of degrees -- the top is 0, left is 90, etc. How many
degrees? Well, there's only one other thing on the island that uses degrees.

***************************** SPOILER ALERT *****************************************

To determine the correct button to push on the compass, look through the telescope
and figure the direction that the lighthouse is at.

***************************** SOLUTION ALERT **********************************

I think it is button number 12 or so on the right side if you start counting from
North and count in a Northeat direction.

go to the top of the mountain. adjust the telescope until you see the
light house (135 degrees, i think) and then go to the compass and set it
to 135 degrees( The equivalent of 4:30 on a clock ). This, I think will
turn on the underwater lights.
