Why are games so dark?

My desktop, jpegs, DVD movies, etc all match well with one brightness
setting. But I have to turn the brightness way up for games. I'm currently
playing Blair Witch Vol 1, and it's the worst yet. Darkness may provide a
spooky effect, but this is ridiculous. Has anyone else noticed this?

Yup. It's a painindabutt.
Some are just dark, like Drowned God. You turn the brightness way
up and it looks OK. Others you have a choice of not seeing anything
because of the darkness or having a washed out picture in the games.
I think they make some games so you have to play them at night
in order to see them properly. I don't know why they can't fix the
gamma properly.

I think that some games are just designed to be played in the dark. Take
Undying or Thief for instance. It helps with the mood of the game. I do
think they should give you more control to change the settings if you decide
to keep the lights on.

Frequently, especially some of the Cryo games. However, you might want to
adjust your monitor's gamma too. Many video card/monitor combos have a bad
default gamme setting. Anyway, try this web page:

I've found most games that involve lots of spooky night scenes have to
be played in a completely dark room. This is ok for the winter, but
means I play fewer games in the summer months :-)

Plus a lot of older graphics cards are not too good at the various
shades of grey that the likes of Deus Ex uses.

Hi.

Yes. It does seem to be a rather "overdone" current trend.
And in fact in some cases it's easy to miss important stuff because it's
just so dark you can't see it !!
[Maybe it cuts down on the lighting costs ;-D]

Cheers.

In some cases, like BW1, it's deliberate. In other cases, it's either
wacky graphic settings on the one hand or your display gamma setting
on the other.
