Lands of Lore: unsolvable now???

Oh great. I'm now at the end of Lands of Lore (1), and I'm supposed to
have some "Ruby of Truth" to defeat Scotia. The problem is, I don't
have it in my inventory. I have no idea what has happened to it,
whether I have sold it, or if I have just dropped it accidentally
somewhere.

I have the shard of truth, but alone that does not apparently do
anything. Is there any way to end the game anymore? Can Scotia be
killed without the "Whole Truth"? He seems to initially take some
damage, but then turns into some kind of spider after which nothing
seems to cause damage.

Or does someone know if it is possible to see from the save game files
somehow where that ruby of truth might be located at the moment? I
guess the information is there, as save games seem to save the
location of each object.

Mental note to RPG and adventure developers: FOR CHRIST SAKE, if you
need some item to complete to game, make sure you can not lose that
object after finding it once!!!

One more question: if it is unsolvable now, does someone happen to
have a save game file for Lands of Lore just before the final
confrontation with Scotia? Thanks.

Yes, it was on the neck of Poulson (sp?). I didn't remember that it
was a _necklace_, because everyone in the game and the walkthru I had
to use in the end talked only about a "ruby". I was looking for a gem
or something.

The reason why I didn't remember it was because I've been playing this
game for months on and off. Heck, I couldn't tell for most of the
things in my inventory when and where I got them... Anyway, I now
completed the game at last.

Anyway, I still stand by my rant: items which are crucial to complete
the game should not be possible to lose. Heck, I had lots of things
lying in my inventory which I thought are crucial to my success at the
end (some kind of special magical items), so I didn't want to either
use them or drop them. Like the horseshoes, what were they used for?
Or those golden chalices, I thought they were special items and kept
them in my crowded inventory, but then I found out they just restore
your health. Pffft...

Nope. The only way to beat Scotia is to combine the shard and the
ruby. I remember reading somewhere that the scorpion (the last
creature she changes into) has infinite hit points. Only by using the
whole truth on her while she shapeshifts (while she glows blue) can
you defeat her.

Well, considering that the first quest you are given is to go retrieve
the ruby of truth from Roland's mansion, because the king will need it
to resist Scotia, I'd say it should not have come as a surprise. You
are actually the first person I know of who managed to lose the ruby.
Check if you're not wearing it around your neck. But if you really

lost it, I think you're permanently stuck...

At least in the sequel you can't throw away anything vital.

Yeah, but that's a pretty poor excuse for role playing isn't it!

I mean if people want to play a =really dumb= character, and get
crucified by the baddy at the end ('Ooops, excuse me Saverok, I seem to
have forgotten to bring a sword') I figure the game should let them.

Yeah, and let's have more of those pits you can fall into and not get
out of (Lands of lore 2 had a few of those, iirc!)

It's better than in Ultima 7 - in the final conflict I realised that I'd
left the blackrock wand behind, and while the Guardian was preparing to come
through the portal, returned to Britain, collected it, returned, and blew up
the gate :-)

Not to mention the water. Couldn't one of your wonderful shapes have been a
duck or fish or something?

At least in the water you drowned fairly fast. There were several pits
(eg the secret area below the waterfall) where you just starved to death
