Hi, I'm trying to play Myst, and it's pretty good so far, except
there are these places where the PC simply hangs up and I have to
do a Ctrl-Alt-Del.

The game works fine except when I try to press some buttons in the
power room and also the dimensional imager control panel thing. It
hangs consistently. Anyone know how I can fix this? Any help is
appreciated. Thanks!

The system is a Gateway 486/66 with an ATI card (Ultra Pro?),
a Pro Audio Spectrum16, and a Chinon CDS535 drive with a Trantor
driver from ftp.uwp.edu. The ATI drivers might be old - do
you know where I can find new ones?

Myst hangs "reliably" for me at the imaging pool.

I'd really like to hear from anyone with a Gatway 2000 who can get Myst to
work. My system is a 4DX2-66V with the ATI Ultra XLR video card (running
v. 2.21 of the drivers), a Mitsumi FX-001D drive (using MCSDEX 2.23), and a
Media Vision (MV16CARD) with v. 2.0 of the drivers for it.

I have a GW2K 486 DX2/50 with ATI GUP and Creative multimedia (SB16).
(Version 2.21 ATI drivers. Latest ones are available from GW2K's
download service, 1-800-846-7562.) Myst works fine - now. I am pretty
sure that crashes at the imaging pool are fixed by going to Version
1.01. Here's my experience:

o Crash when returning from the tower to the library.

o Broderbund tech support said this was due to an old sound driver. I
asked about 1.01 (I had 1.0), and was told that 1.01 fixed several very
specific problems. He asked if I got good sharp clicks when I pushed the
imager buttons. If I did, I didn't need 1.01. (I had no problems in
that part of the game.)

o He said he'd send me the latest SB16 drivers. Expecting a floppy, I
was astounded when the package (which arrived within a week) contained a
new CD, with Version 1.01. The SB16 directory had the new SB drivers.

o Installed the new SB drivers. Not letting well enough alone, I
experimented with the new and old CDs together with the new and old
program installs. Mixing versions caused trouble leaving the imager
room. That suggests a revision in that territory. Everything works fine
with 1.01, and I think 1.0 would have worked for me with just the SB
driver update.

My suggestion is to get hold of Broderbund tech support. Once I got
through to their number (20 minutes of re-dialing) and past their %$@$!!
voice mail system they were very helpful.

Good luck

One thing I haven't seen mentioned in this discussion is the amount of memory
available to Windows (listed in the Help About section of Program Manager).
The Myst manual claims that Myst needs at least 10,000 KB to run properly. I
was experiencing a regular lockup coming out of the power control room when my
free system resources were approximately 7,000 KB. I increased the virtual
memory (swap file) until the system resources were over 10,000 KB and the
problem seems to have gone away.

Hope this helps,
Kevin

Take it back. I had the same thing happen to me with my
Gateway. You need version 1.01 or there might be a patch for that sound
card(at least there is for 1 type of sound card & the Gateway
commputers).

******* SOLUTION TO YOUR PROBLEMS *******

My system also did exactly what was described above. What I
found that worked for me was updateing the PAS16 MPC drivers. These
can be found on the Media Vision BBS, in the Patchs directory. The
file you want is called Myst.exe. This is a self extracting archive
that has the drivers that work under Myst.

Well, the same things happened to me. My husband is installing some
hardware and software on a brand new computer for a friend of his. I was
playing Myst on the new computer, and every time I press several buttons,
like in the planetarium room with the panel above the chair, and when I
take the elevator to the tower , it happens. The weird thing is that when
I disable the soundcard, it doesn't happen. Of course, I can't play the
whole game with no sound. My husband thought it was a bug in the video
drivers he had installed, or with the soundcard, but it's starting to
sound like a Myst problem, as your hang-ups occur in the same places that
mine do.

I had the exact same problem with Myst and my 486-50DX w/4Meg RAM.
I checked the drivers, checked the cards, checked the interupts,
checked the configurations, the problem still existed.

Then I went out, bought 4 more MEG of RAM and installed it. Myst
ran perfectly and i finished the game in two days.

The 4 Meg RAM minimum requirement is BULLSHIT!

Yeah, I have a DX2-66 with 4 megs RAM - I've had Myst crash on me
several times - always when I click on the machine in the planetarium
or on the elevator button. Kicks me all the way out to DOS! (I
suspect that the above comment re:4 meg minimum is correct.

DITTO! Having 8 megs isn't the answer! There *must* be an answer
mustn't there though? I keep seeing postings from people who are
cavalierly moving from age to age (what's an age?), and I keep
wondering, what do they know I don't? And wishing they'd share it
with one of you, who I now publicly join, who are in this quandary ...

Myst "hangs" for me too, and I have 16MB RAM! It seems to happen when
it tries to run a video sequence. But, if I do a ctrl-alt-delete, and
then hit <escape> in response to the Windows prompt, the game restarts
with no problem. So it's a minor annoyance, not a show-stopper.

I have 8 meg too on my 386 DX25 but I have not encounter problem like this.
After finishing the game I have only found one error that is when I am in
the sound age under the tunnels. It seem that when I go to certain part of
the tunnel, I get an error reading drive. Apart from that none. I have also
tried to return the CD but when I was in the shop I bought it from I cannot
reproduce the error. I have tried it on a 486DX33 in the shop and nothing.
From my guess, it could be the slower machine I have, but I could be
wrong. Try to look at the configuration too. It might be that.

The ages you were wandering about is link to the Myst island by the books
found on the island. Thy are the other places you have to visit in order
to find clue for solving the game. Of course there are other puzzle you
have to solve in these ages to get the clues. There is a total of four
ages in Myst. For more info on these ages, read the book in the library
located in the tower building.

I'm not sure if anyone got my last posting on this subject, but I had
the exact same problems and it's down to the soundcard settings. For
example my hangs were cured by using interrupts above 10 for 16 bit
sound on a ProAudio card. I know other people can't get it to work with
the gateway2000 sound card. Don't forget that your Windows driver can
change the DOS interrupt/DMA settings. The quickest way to check is to
disable sound by removing the driver or by some other method, I can
almost guarantee that the hangs will disappear.

I contacted Gateway & Broderbund by email when I had the crash and they
were pretty helpful and pointed me at updated drivers for this game.

Well, my Myst doesn't actually hang - it totally kicks me out to a DOS
prompt! :-( Regarding the soundcard situation, I have an SB16, and my
Myst disk came with the "necessary" Soundblaster drivers on it. Does
anyone else have Myst crash all the way out of Windows? (I don't even
get an error message!) It doesn't seem to crash until I've been playing
for about an hour or hour and a half, but then it seems to happen at the
same point - clicking on the machine in the planetarium, or on the
elevator button.

I had similar problems - Myst would lock up when I spun down the generators
in the generator room. (8 megs, lots of swap space).

Upgrading the sound/video drivers to the latest versions I could find
made the problem go away for me. It's worth trying, anyway.

I *sense* that article may hold the key to the problem!

Well, I tried your approach yesterday.

I checked my DMA and IRQ, and I have DMA 5 and IRQ 15 on my Logitech Soundman
16 (fully compatible with PAS), so that wasn't it...

I tried to remove the PAS Wave driver from Windows, and presto! the computer
continued where before it crashed.

Well, since my drivers already used an IRQ > 10, your solution doesn't help,
but maybe new drivers will help.

I'll send an e-mail to Broderbund (the one I have is BBun...@aol.com), so
I'll try that.

Thanks for the tip!

Help me please! I've been using a PC for 9 years and I'm stumped.
I can not get "multimedia games" run on my system. I've been over my system
with a fine tooth comb, spending 100's of hours of diagnostics and I
simply have no luck. I have called techical service from the companies
that I could reach and the general response was it should work, we don't
know why it doesn't.
I am really sorry for the long post but I believe that any kind,
god like, soul who wishes to help me will need all the info they can get.
If I don't get any help, I'm tempted to leave the PC gaming world for
a 3DO or <shudder> a mac.

Please email me. If anyone is interest, I will post a summery of the
response I get.

This worked ok under the creative labs kit
b. Return to Zork -does not reconize WSS mode of card. Sound blaster

(same under qemm and emm386)
d. Wing Commander II - Speech is broken up and eventually dies. The
game is still playable.
(same under qemm and emm386)
e. Doom II - works fine in regular mode. In modem Doom, the digital

(same under qemm, emm386 and nothing)
f. Myst - The Game will randomly lock up with a GPF. Sometimes
it goes to dos requiring a reboot. Speack repeats itself sometimes.
Seems to happen more with Emm386, then with qemm and the lest
problems (but still happens) with bare himem setup.
I tried different ati drivers and 800x600 seems to work the best
for avoid gpfs but speach broke up alot and some was unreconizable.
With the generic 256c microsoft drivers release awhile ago,
it crashes almost instanly within the first 3 moves.
g. Under the killing moon demo. Does not reconize Sound Blaster (any)
mode of the sound card. Reconizes WSS and plays crystal clear.
1. With Emm386, it locks up before the game runs
2. With bear boot - it skips alot in the voice and then exits with

3. With QEMM, plays fine but in intro it locks up the computer and
alot of colorful lines fill the screen.
h. os/2 (2.0 - 2.11) - With each upgrade of os/2 I had more, and
more problems.
1. 2.0 - work the best but driver support was poor and alot of dos

2. 2.01 -worked with more dos programs but it was very unstable.
3. 2.1 - mouse didn't work. Had to use a substitute driver. Printer
simply refused to ever work again. Less stable than 2.0 but
more that 2.01
4. 2.11 -crashed several times a day. Apparently online games
from my bbs it did not like. Also didn't want to
reconize my creave labs mm kit. Seem to work with less
dos programs that 2.1

(note: I have many educational cd roms such as Putt-Putt, Living books and
3-d dinosaur that work fine without a problem. MM programs such as
media clips, interactive entertainment mag, ufo, and USA Today work
perfect. And games such as Sherlock holms, MM battle chess, monkey's
Island, Doom, and Kings Quest V work fine too. Almost all disk games
run as well as on any other system.)

III Bios settings

-I feel the problem is here but I'm clueless on bios settings. Every
setting except for Auto-configuration is how it was shipped to me.
Auto-configuration cause problems with high speed modems (or altest thats
what the tech guy said) and after I turned it off, those problems when

Robert,

I don't know about most of these games. However, as far as I am concerned, the
only card to do 100% Sound Blaster emulation is a Sound Blaster card.

Everyone that I know that has bought a non-SB card has had problems with
games. For example, on my friends machine, DOOM ii runs fine, but exiting
Doom kills the sound card. The PC needs to be powered down to get the
Sound Card to work again. Links386 sounds revolting during play, even though
the sound test appears OK, Rebel Assault just hangs etc, etc etc. Yet I have
none of these problems with my Sound Blaster PRO card.

As far as I can tell, all the problems are due to imperfect emulation.
The problems dissappear if you configure the games for no sound.

I suspect that some of your problems are due to this.
If you want to play games without problems get a real Sound Blaster card.

An advertisement in Wired magazine last month showed that there is a new
logo for sound cards that looks like a man's head with a wave coming off
of one side of it given out by Creative Labs people to cards they find
100% Sound Blaster compatible.

This standard is a good thing, and should have been around a while ago.
Companies have long touted their cards as SB Compatible, but this means
that CL tested it to make sure.

By the way, I also own an SB PRO card.

Enjoy,
Paul

I own a PAS 16 Rev D. I haven't had any problems with the SB set up
probably because the PAS 16 is SB hardware compatible (Media Vision
licensed the technology from Creative Labs). I love the card because
it's like having 2 cards in 1, a PAS and a SB.

You mention a number of games that have crashed but failed to include
the sound cards they crashed on. Just what cards are you talking about?

Matt.

Hi,

From most of the problems reported, it seems that it is sound related.
This might not be a good suggestion, but have you tried an Original
SoundBlaster? or GUS or Roland? or other well-known brands?

I never have faith in other brands since quite a number of them are
reknowned for weird compatibility problems.

Try a friend's SB card in your system.

Looks like you are suffering from compatibility problems. Creative cannot
guarantee their drivers to work with 3rd party sound cards.

I would like to thank everyone that responded to my plea for help. I
recieved many helpful suggestions and my major headaches have been
solved! I'm sharing the information that helped me and hopefully it
will help others.

I. Solutions that worked -

a. The mouse driver
* On the IRQ page of the MSD printouts there may be something odd here:

4 CCE1:0096 COM1: COM3: COM1: Serial Mouse MSCDEX.EXE

The microsoft mouse driver was conflicting with my multimedia ext.
Strange as it sounds, I never tried to use a different mouse driver.
After replacing the 8.x microsoft mouse driver with a 5 year old
microsoft compatable mouse systems driver, many programs begain to work.
Under A Killing Moon and 7th guest stopped locking up.

b. cdrom DMA
DEVICE=C:\MZTINIT.SYS /A220 /I7 /D1 /M /CA340 /CI10 /V9
DEVICE=C:\MTMCDAE.SYS /D:MSCDOAK /M:32 /P:340 /I:10 /T:S /A:0 /X

Basically what I have here is the CD rom and sound card on the same
dma. I tried to use the install program and all it changed was the
/T: from s to whatever (say 6). Apparently diamond forgot an important
switch for the mztinit /CD

so we have..

DEVICE=C:\MZTINIT.SYS /A220 /I7 /D1 /M /CD6 /CA340 /CI10 /V9
DEVICE=C:\MTMCDAE.SYS /D:MSCDOAK /M:32 /P:340 /I:10 /T:6 /A:0 /X

With that, Myst started working fine, with no skipping and no gpfs!!!!
Wing Commander II and Inca started working just fine too. Under a Killing Moon
worked better in the video demo.

c. skipping and performance.

f0000-ffffff,64 cacheable: no
try yes (improves system bios performance)

dma adress/data hold time: 2-3T

i/o recovery time delay: 8bclk
cache read hit burst: 3-2-2-2

-> rather slow, try speeding up (I have 2-1-1-1)

cache write hit wait state: 2ws

-> rather slow, try speeding up (I have 0ws)

Dram Read wait state: 3ws
Dram write wait state: 3ws

-> try speeding up, I have 0ws

Dram write wait state: 3ws

-> try speeding up, I have 0ws

After those changes were made to my bios, my system recieve a measurable
performance again. Under a Killing Moon ran smooth a slik and so did 7th
Guest and Myst. Also the Relentless demo showed that my max frames per
second went up for 50 to 65 and average FPS when up from 21 to 28

II. Suggestions that did not work.

Alot of people claimed that irq7 was the cause of all my problems. Well,
it didn't really make any difference if it was on 5,7, or 10.
Another large group of messages dealt with how horrible QEMM was.
EMM386 caused more problems. Even with the changes, UAKM still did not
run under emm386. Another point that was made in just about the same
email was the diskcaching. Well I tried smartdrive and found it to be
slower and didn't really help any of my problems.
Then we have os/2. Several of you though I was trying to run
games under os/2 and under a memory manager at the same time. I used bare
dos for the point of refrence for the games and had seperate problems
with os/2. I got about a dozen messages saying to just dump os/2, another
dozen claiming that the problems were fixed in warp, yet another
dozen that suggeted solutions that I had already tried and did not work,
and a handful that were outright rude. In short, I haven't tried os/2 after
these fixes so I don't know if it will work better or not.

III. Games that I still have problems with.

A. Return to Zork -does not reconize WSS mode of card. Sound blaster

(regular and pro) cause the speech to be crackly and repeats the
last second of a sample over and over until next digital sound.
Eventually the game locks up, requiring a reset. Normally in the
in the town
Thats under qemm.
Under EMM386, the speech is cut off in the middle and the game
locks up by the light house.

B. Doom II - works fine in regular mode. In modem Doom, the digital

effects will not play. Doom I doesn't have this problem.
(same under qemm, emm386 and nothing)
