I'm looking for games that take place in a winter environment, or
otherwise have a strong feeling of winter about them.
All suggestions are welcome; I don't mind if it's a text adventure or
a first-person shooter. Also fine if it's just part of the game, as
long as you feel it's a significant and memorable part.
Thanks for your help.

If you don't mind a role-playing game, Icewind Dale is all wintery.

Elder Scrolls III: Bloodmoon
Arthur's Knights I took place in the winter
Some of the Tomb Raider games had snowy levels.
The first Tomb Raider started out in the Peruvian mountains
and Tomb Raider 2 Gold bonus level - Golden Mask started
out on some island in the Bering Sea.
The Ryme Age in RealMyst - only a small level, but memorable.
That reminded me that _Bard's Tale I_ is set in a town that's
snowed in by a magical blizzard. There's not much winter
atmosphere to speak of though.
Just rememebered that Max Payne was mainly set during a very harsh winter.

There are lots. Carnivores: Ice Age had snowy maps. Max Payne.
And there used to be an (official) CounterStrike map that was snowy,
you had to get the prez to a helicopter. I still remember the
footstep sound in that one. Dungeon Siege had some parts with
beautiful snowy terrain. Serious Sam Second Encounter had a winter
village deathmap map, and you can even get dressed up in Santa Claus
outfits. I seem to remember snowy areas of Germany in No One Lives
Forever and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Mobil 1 Rally Championship
(might have been called Rally Championship 2000 outside the US?) had
snowy rally race courses. Deadly Dozen Pacific Theatre had winter
missions. And an oldie but goodie, Drakan did too. And Warcraft.
Ok that's enough for now.

Animal Crossing! (GameCube, sorry.) It is now winter, (snow fell and

It's probably just me, but since you mentioned text adventures, Infocom's
The Lurking Horror takes place during "the worst blizzard in 50 years" or
something like that, and I found the prose very evocative of winter, even
though the majority of the game takes place indoors. I have been snowed in
at school with just a few other souls, just like the game describes, and the
feeling of isolation and bleakness is well captured.
I'm old enough to remember something called, iirc, 'Midwinter', but I
doubt it'll run on any of today's hardware even if you could find it.

There was also several winter maps in 'Blood' (the first one, not Blood 2).
These were actually in one of the expansion paks that you could get for the
game. But you probably couldn't run that game if you're running Win XP,
2000, or NT since it was for DOS. Some of those levels were fun. Very high
cliffs with really narrow ledges and thousand foot drops if you slipped.
Lots of snow and ice. You could find holes in the ice in spots and go for a
swim. It was one of the more fun, older games.

Outcast opens in a winter enviroment, though disappointingly, it's only the
training world - might be worth tracking down the demo if you're
interested, as it covered this section. Elite Force 2 also has a rather
nice snowy world. Other than that, I can't think of much since Midwinter
that's truly immersed in an icy enviroment. Sigh.
Dave.
Complete freedom to wander around an island, battling evil forces,
chatting to locals and resuing people? Morrowind isn't that far off.

Ah but you don't get to hang-glide, snow-cat, look for resources,
recruit all your chums, etc. Midwinter had a lot of cool ideas (even if
it was turn based) for its age. I used to spend a lot of time 'resting

Yes, indeed. Graphics very primitive these days, but the game was fun.
In my Amiga collection with Flames of Freedom ( Midwinter 2 )
John Lewis
Yes.
The Amiga/Atari ST glory-days.
The following is OT a little, but may be interesting to some.
Midwinter, Flames of Freedom ( Midwinter 2). Dungeon Master
( 1986, grand-daddy of all first-person dungeon romps -- in stereo
sound ) Faery Tale Adventure ( grand-daddy of graphical
adventures, mood-music and all), Cadaver ( grand-daddy of
isometric games ) Settlers 1 ( first wriitten for the Amiga, and still
plays very well...........). Because of the unique sound, music and
graphics capability of the Amiga in the 1985 thru 1992 era,
the open developmental documentation available ( unlike the PC
and the Mac), togther with a couple of excellent C
-compilers, virtually every creative game developer
focussed on the Amiga platform. A complete top-level game
could be done on a home machine. For example:Faery Tale
Adventure, programming, story, graphics, sound and music
was developed solely by David Joiner. And fitted on a 880K
floppy-disk. If you have a chance to see either FTA or
Dungeon Master you may be astonished by what could be
put on a single floppy -- all credit to the brilliant video and audio
hardware integrated into the Amiga architecture, maximum
game functionality for minimum code A later horrible port
of FTA was done to the (then) pip-squeak 16-color graphics
PC.
Many of today's top games programmers honed their
creativity on the Amiga. Digital Illusions (BF1942) got
their start with the Pinball Dreams/Illusions/Fantasies
series for the Amiga (1992) The only hardware platform
at the time truly capable of doing justice to pinball
emulation.

Robert, a few "wintry-themed" games here (various genres, but mostly "dark"
Adventures):
* Jazz Jackrabbit 2: Holiday Hare (Christmas-y, silly holiday-themed
platformer - compleat with Santa Claus)
* Morpheus (Pure Adventure, and as wintry as you can get - it's set on a
icebound ship in the Arctic)
* Dracula Resurrection (Pure Adventure - opens with a video of snowbound
Borgo Pass in 1897)
* Dracula: The Last Sanctuary (Pure Adventure - 2nd of the Dreamcatcher
"Dracula" series - more snow than first - the game takes you to the Count's
castle in Transylvania to rescue Mina)
* Clive Barker's Undying (Survival Horror/Action/Adventure - lovely snowy
old spooky monastery)
* Black Dahlia (Adventure - not much snow, but it sure gives you chills)
* Titanic - An Adventure Out of Time (Adventure - no explanation necessary
for its selection, but the game is not that great)
* Zork: The Nemesis (Adventure - one of the "Forbidden Lands" is quite
wintry - and ZN is one of the best Pure Adventure games ever made)
So, Robert - there you have it. A few of the "Baby, It's Cold Outside"
games.

It was a brilliant idea but unfortunately very flawed. I'm suprised that no
games developer have tried to resurect this as it could be fantastic on our
modern PCs or consoles.
Basically an ice age had engulfed Earth. You were stuck on an large island.
The baddies were taking over the world and had decided your island was next.
You went round in 1st person warning and getting help from the islanders as
well as snipe at and attempt to destroy enemy convoys across the island. You
interated with characters and aquired their help as well resolve many mini
plots.
You could:
Ski
drive snowploughs
ride ski bikes
ride chairlifts
fly hang gliders
Weapons included:
sniper rifle
grenades
etc.
You had to find provisions and medicine
It was very immersive
Someone out there build it for the PC PLEASE!

Thief 2 had many winter maps in the user created fan missions. There are
hundreds of them and some of them are even better than the ones that come
with the game. It's an older title and the graphics aren't as pretty as
some of the newer games but it's still a greate game. Different gameplay
than the majority of the other shooters out there since the idea is not to

"Herculania" - stuck in ice in the Arctic. Pne of your goals is to get it
running again.
Great, frightening, point 'n' clicker "Pure" Adventure game.

P.S. Bateau, it looks like some folks want your "creations" to be more like

Thanks, everyone, for the excellent suggestions and comments.
I've collected all of them and made a list with links to information, reviews
and downloads (where possible). I won't clutter up the newsgroups with it;
I'll put together a simple web page and post a link in a day or two.
Of course I realise most people won't be interested... but wouldn't it be a
nice thing to find if you were? >:)

How about Christmas Lemmings (also known as Holiday Lemmings)?

He's probably referring to Prisoner of Ice, an adventure game set on a
submarine on a rescue mission to the antarctic.
The sub picks up some strange cargo during the rescue which turns out to
be a horrific monster that eats the captain. You're trapped on board
with it.
A Cthulhu mythos game apparently.

Happyland Adventures X-Mas Edition is a freeware platformer. Icy Tower
is not that wintery, but it's icy and it's simple and addictive. Both
those games can be found at http://www.freelunchdesign.com/games.shtml
Permanent Daylight is a freeware adventure game set in a snowy
landscape. It's fun, too. http://user.tninet.se/~vqb114l/ilb/
Calsoon 2 is another adventure game. I haven't played this one yet, but
it's set on an island that suffers from constant winter, and the main
character starts the game in his bare underwear. http://www.gaspop.com/
Rikard
Twinsen's Adventure / Relentless / Little Big Adventure. Can't believe I
almost forgot that.

Was a half decent game actually. Can't remember too much about it
though.

And another recently released and most excellent 2D platformer is:
Snowy: The Bear's Adventures
http://www.alawar.com/games/snowy/?alawar=newGame2
Excellent gameplay, beautifully drawn and animated graphics. I can't
commend it highly enough. :-)

Since you crossposted to an RPG newsgroup:
Icewind Dale I & II
-Alan
I thought of another one - Agon
Some screenshots here
http://www.justadventure.com/reviews/AgonPart2/AgonPart2.shtm
I found the game fun for the most part, but that part with the
&%&$&& teddy bear and the underwater roadways has to be
one of the most downright annoying puzzles I've ever
encountered.

Halo has some nice outside snow scenes. NOLF too.
Fatal Illusion has some snowy scenes - the part where they have to go
up the mountain in the cable car.

Never played it myself. I just remember a review of sorts in a gaming
magazine a former roommate had when Prisoner of Ice was new.
Only reason I knew anything about the plot was because I remembered the
name and googled.

NOLF1 and NOLF2 both have wintery levels. You can even drive a snow
mobile if you wish (keep in mind, the real thing isn't quite that hard
to drive). I think you had a snow mobile level in Contract Jack as
well, but I can't really recommend that game.
TUX Racer. A Penguin toboggan game for Linux. Starring TUX the
penguin, the Linux mascot. Not terribly complex, but is fun.
And... In the less memorable department:
SouthPark, the FPS. You can throw yellow snowballs at opponents.
That's sort of the highlight of the game, so don't expect much.
Xtreme Snowboarding. A rip off of the Tony Hawke games. I had
thought it was published by Activision because of the similarities,
but there's no mention on the site. There was a better snowboarding
game from a year or two ago, but I don't remember the name. It was
also a Tony Hawke clone, but it was much more well done.

It was a while ago and it came out towards the end of the adventure
gaming era. Hopefully BS3 will show devs that teh adventure genre
isn't dead.
Lynley
Which is basically a well-done clone of Snow Brothers, an older arcade
game. Woo!
Good stuff, both.

I've had limited success in running Blood (1) on WindowsXP. Using
VDMSound i was able to play it at 320x200 resolution with Sound
Blaster sound enabled. It's unfortunate i could not manage to run the
title at 640x480 or any of the higher resolutions. I haven't tried
DOSBox with it yet so there may be some hope there.

I'm reading this from the RPG newsgroup so with that in mind...
Diablo II: Lord of Destruction
Icewind Dale I
Icewind Dale II
Tales of the Unknown: The Bard's Tale
The Elder Scrolls: Bloodmoon
There are other RPGs with sections that take place in snow-covered
landscapes but they're probably of less use to you:
Anachronox
The Bard's Tale III: Thief of Fate
The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall
Dungeon Siege: Legends of Aranna
Neverwinter Nights
