Do you know how to tell if a CDROM game is copy protected?
Do you know how I can make a legitimate backup?
--
I just bought for my kids through their school magazine
the single $20 CDROM titled Horse Adventures Mystery Ride
branded by Barbie Software, published by Vivendi Universal Games,
developed by Blue Monkey Studios, designed by RenderWare, &
licensed by Mattel New Media.

Immediately, since the kids destroy everything, I made the
obligatory backup CDROM, put away the original, and tried to
install & play using that single CDROM backup. No go.

The original works. But, none of my repeated backup attempts
work (using IBM RecordNow, version 5.1, by Sonic Solutions,
on Windows XP). On the backup copies, the game seems to start,
but, the game does not seem to play.

There is no error message when making the backup. Nor is there
an overt error message when attempting to play the legitimate
backup. The backed up games just hang forever at the start point.

There is absolutely no mention on the box of any restriction
on use which indicates any copy protection limiting my legal
use of a backup. Nor is there anything about that deficiency in
the instruction manual. I haven't yet complained to the toll-free
customer service (866)719-2894 or technical support (866)428-5675
numbers ( http://support.vugames.com ) because I don't know yet
if I did something wrong or if they are the ones who did something
wrong (by limiting my legitimate right to a backup copy).

My question is:
Do you know how to tell if this CDROM game is copy protected?
Do you know how I can make a legitimate backup of this CDROM?

I bought my daughter Barbie of Swan Lake and had the exact same experience.
I believe you can't make a backup copy which really makes me mad. We
should have a right to protect what we paid our money for.

I understand precisely how you feel. For my granddaughter, I have set up
Barbie on a virtual drive and not had any problem. Perhaps you could try
doing that. I haven't tested it on the newest games yet because I live in a
'trickle-down' house and am quite happy with games that came out a year or
so ago :)

If you do try this, make sure the icon that the game leaves on the desktop
points to the virtual drive and not the C:\ drive.

You do have that right. Duplication for backup is a recognised fair use
right. You just don't have the technical means to exercise that right.

There are a few utilities available which can identify which CD
Protection is being used on your game CDs:

I first tried Clone CD but the clonecd Barbie backup acted the same as
the IBM RecordNow Barbie backup in that it allowed the Barbie game
to install and the initial screen to start up; but nothing else
(whereas the original Barbie game continues at this point).

So, maybe the protection on this Barbie CDROM is wierd (someone
wasn't kidding when they said you get two games in one ... one is
how to play the Barbie game; the other is to figure out how to
legitimately back it up).

Just now, I picked up "Alcohol 120" from:
http://www.alcohol-software.com/download.php
http://downloads.alcohol-software.com/Alcohol120_trial_1_4_8_1222.exe

I hope that will work. I'm *still* trying to figure out what kind of
copy protection (if any) is used for this Barbie CDROM. I did go to
the recommended cdmediaworld web pages on the topic:
http://www.cdmediaworld.com/hardware/cdrom/cd_protections.shtml
But, those detailed descriptions and tons of software are dauntingly
confusing to a high-school educated Mom who doesn't want to start a
nuclear war, but, simply wants to ensure her kids' basic new game
can be safely backed up & stored on the shelf for safety purposes.

I also just now downloaded ClonyXXL from the location:
http://www.cdmediaworld.com/hardware/cdrom/cd_utils_2.shtml#ClonyXXL
This "ClonyXXL.zip" file contained only one executable "ClonyXXL.exe"
which, when executed, brings up a GUI in a mixture of German and
English and Numerical (just to further confuse me, I guess :).

When I press the big "CD Scannen" button, ClonyXXL reports:
"ClonyXXL v2.0.1.5 CD Scanner (Freeware)"
Quelle: D:\Barbie_Horse [B4DCCBF3]
Kopierschutz: SecuROM *new* V 4.84.84.0009
CD Typ: N/A
Dateien: 4385
Verzeichnisse: 182
Je mehr Schadel desto harter der Kopierschutz

There are plenty of other buttons, most of which I'm afraid
to touch, such as "Beenden", "System Uberwachen", "Scann Optionen",
"Laden", "CD aktualisieren", etc. because I'm not sure which one
launches the rocket tipped with a nuclear warhead. :)

Back to Alcohol 120%, when it runs, it at least reports in English:
"Alcohol 120% is the CD & DVD emulation and recording software
allows users to copy a visible and an invisible discs.
Alcohol 120% enables users to create 31 virtual CD & DVD-ROM
to play discs without needing a physical disc, it also enables
users to copy CD & DVD to CD-R / CD-RW / DVD-R / DVD-RW /
DVD-RAM / DVD+RW. Alcohol 120% combines all functions of
Alcohol 52% (CD & DVD emulation software) and Alcohol 68%
(CD & DVD recording software)."

When I press File - Copy Wizard, within 2 minutes, it saves an
image file to my (very limited) hard disk with a default
Write Method = DAO / SAO 10X (1500 KB/Sec) (whatever that means)
and a default file name of c:\temp\Barbie_Horse.mds
with an apparently "Device Status" of (whatever this means):
(D:)HL-DT-ST R/W/DVD GCC-4160N(2:0) Length 127184 / 248.4 Mb / 028:15:59
and, within a minute or two, it says:
"Alcohol 120% - Copy Wizard"
All recording procedures have been completed!
Elapsed Time: 00.03:24 (average speed 9.5x)

What I seem to have is a CDROM burned now; and two files:
c:\temp\Barbie_Horse.mds 1 KB
c:\temp\Barbie_Horse.mdf 292,126 KB

Unfortunately, after all that, this backup copy joins the
rest of the coasters created by the methods listed above.

MY QUESTION: Did I miss something fundamental here (please let me know).

I *do* very much appreciate your help.
I guess I just haven't learned how to play the basic backup game yet.

Copy Protection: SecuROM

The rest is irrelevant (files/directories).
The more skulls, the harder the copy protection.

Beenden = quit
System Überwachen = watch system (stays in teh background?)
scan options
laden = load
CD aktualisieren = check for new CD in drive

But as another poster mentioned, you can change the language.

I'm still unsuccessful at making a backup (you sure were right when
you said we get two games in one).

Is this the recommended backup method?

1. Use "ClonyXXL" to determine the copy protection scheme (if any):
- SecuROM (new)

2. Then use "Alcohol 120%" (or equiv.) to burn a 1:1 copy of the CDROM:
- Either to a backup CDROM,
- Or to a Barbie_Horse.mdf file on the hard disk

3. Then use "Daemon Tools" to play:
- Either the backup CDROM,
- Or the Barbie_Horse.mdf file on the hard disk.

The reason I ask is I have (supposedly successfully) burned a 1:1
copy using Alcohol 120% both to CDROM and to a 292 Kbyte
c:\temp\Barbie_Horse.mdf (and 1Kbyte Barbie_Horse.mds) file.

But, sorry for being so needy, my child _still_ can't play the
Barbie Horse backup CDROM or disk image.

What I do is with Daemon Tools, version 3.44 (WinXP & Win2K) is:
a) Right click on the Daemon Tools icon in the Windows task bar
b) Emulation set to "All Options On" (which includes Securom)
c) Options set to all options (which includes automount)

But, I don't know the next step to play the CDROM:
- When I put the 1:1 CDROM copy in the disk drive the
Barbie software comes up but when I hit "Play", it spins & spins
(but never plays) just like it did from the original (dumb)
backup copy.

If I try to play the MDS file stored on the hard disk:
- I right click on the Daemon icon in the task bar
- I select "Virtual CD/DVD-ROM"
- I select "Device 3:[K:]C:\temp\Barbie_Horse.mds"
- I select "mount image" and press OK.
But, in this case, even less comes up. Nothing comes up.

What am I doing wrong?

After you mount the image, are you able to see the
contents in Windows Explorer?
Is K: the letter of your virtual drive?

Are you talking about the game or DVD (Barbie of Swan Lake). I bought the
DVD and it backed up nicely (I have a 2 year old, nuff said). I used
DVDDecrypter and DVDShrink (the original is like 8 GB). Got the whole thing
including the menus. The original is safely tucked away with Finding Nemo
and Lilo and Stitch.

Hi,

I'm having the same problem. I've tried backing it up with both Nero
and CloneCD 5.1. No luck!

Please let me know if you've been able to copy it...

Thanks
