He's got a Gateway 2000, VESA Local Bus, 486dx2 66, about 10
months old. Anyone have any tips? He's not getting much help
from either Broderbund or Gateway. E-mail would be preferred.
Thanks in advance.

What's his sound card?
If it's the Pro Audio Spectrum, I suspect old drivers for that card, since
MYST also crashed in the same place with me, as well...
If he needs the location of the drivers, ask.

Believe it or not... It's a .signature file! I'm ALL SEVEN RING WITCH
Now what shall I put in... My address would be nice: chr...@witch.iaehv.nl,
but you knew that already. Uhm - ah - great! No funny sayings to be found
here. Hmmm. What's the use anyway. I'll just delete this.
Hmm... I've been having problems with Myst lockups too; the game locks up
consistently in the "subway" maze, but not always in the exact same place.
Other parts of the game seem to be fine.
I have a similar setup -- GW2000 486DX33 VESA local bus, ATI Ultra Pro
video card, and Pro Audio Spectrum sound card. In an attempt to cure the
problem, I've installed the newest drivers I could find for both the video
and sound cards (2.3 for the ATI card, 3.25 for the PAS). The problem was
still there. I also tried tweaking my Windows .INI files, per some suggestions
someone on the net sent me; same result. I also tried a PAS driver that was
claimed to fix "lockups on Gateway 486 systems" -- still same problem.
Someone on alt.cd-rom claims that upgrading the QuickTime For Windows
driver to version 2.0 should help, but given that the upgrade is
apparently not free, I'm reluctant to shell out any $ for something
which may or may not fix the problem. I've also seen someone on comp.sys.
ibm.pc.games.adventure claim that QuickTime For Windows doesn't work properly
on Micronics 486 motherboards -- and I believe that most of Gateway's 486
motherboards are/were made by Micronics. I have some other cirumstantial
evidence that QuickTime is the problem -- if I *remove* the QuickTime DLL
from the MYST directory, I can actually play through the subway sequence
without the game crashing (but without the animations, of course).
I guess I have several questions:
- Does anyone else have the same/similar hardware setup, and if so, have
you been able to run Myst successfully (in particular, the subway
maze)? If so, then what versions of the video/sound drivers are
you using?
- Can anyone else confirm that QuickTime 2.0 fixes this problem?
- Can anyone else confirm that the Micronics motherboard is part of the
problem?
- Any other ideas/suggestions?

I have ATI Ultra Pro and updated to Ver 2.3 drivers on Broderbund's advice.
I also installed the SoundBlaster drivers that came with Myst. And, alas,
I have a Micronics 486 board. Nothing helps. I still get system hang up
at several points in the game. For example, if I start Myst and stay
on the dock just staring out to sea enjoying the music and watching the
seagulls and doing absolutely nothing, Myst hangs after 30 seconds or so.
The common feature all the hangs have is a fixed scene with a small part
of the image going through changes: I can't pick up the key in the
lighthouse or get past the fortress simulator.

If the subway is the area by the water at the start of the game
then it happens to me as well.

I have a 486DX2-50, ATI Ultra with SB16 and a single speed
CD-ROM.

I also upgraded the ATI drivers (v2.3) and upgradded the sound
drivers with those that came with MYST (are there any more
recent than those?).

I called some Apple distributors licensing number and was told
that QTW v2.0 would not be available til the end of the month,
but I have also read of some people having gotten it. I haven't
found any place to download the newer version.

I becoming convinced that QTW is the problem. QTW videos don't
run well on my machine (poor synchrony between video and audio
and audio sputtering).
How does the making of MYST video run on your machine? I can
also detect audio dropout (or sputtering) in the opening
segment of MYST (the part where you have the animation, music,
and voice.

As above.

How about supplying an FTP site for the new version.

Anyone know the Micronics phone number or ftp site.

I have a 486DX2-50V with ATI Mach 32, SoundBlaster 16 and LMSI single
speed CD ROM.

No, but that is my next step, downloading QT2 for $10 from Compuserve as
soon as my permanent account comes in.
> - Can anyone else confirm that the Micronics motherboard is part of the

No, but Broderbund seems to think that Myst is incompatible with the
486-66, which doesn't explain your or my problem. Both Gateway +
Broderbund tech support have been rather clueless.

I'll keep you posted if QTW 2 solves my problem.
Regarding the "Call to Undefined Dynalink" problem I experienced with Myst
(described in another post), one Broderbund tech rep told me this happened
because Myst was incompatible with my Diamond Stealth 64 video card. I was
about to return the game, but called again and was given the solution to the
problem by another Broderbund rep (I had to delete Myst's QT files since I
had installed the Star Trek Next Gen. Tech Manual). When I asked about the
alleged video card imcompatibility, he responded "Who told you that?"
My point is, you might not be talking to the right tech rep at Broderbund,
and unfortunately, I don't know the name of the guy who solved my problem.

DEVICEBITMAP=off in their MACX section of system.ini if they want to
play QuickTime movies. I suggest that you call ATI and ask them to
help you set devicebitmap to off. They make sevral cards and you can
make this change in different ways.
If anybody has experienced lock up playing QuickTime
Movies & knows it was because they needed
new ProAudio Spectrum drivers I'd like to know.

Yes, I can.
DOES ANYONE KNOW AN FTP SITE WHERE i MIGHT PICK UP QTW 2.O? I've noticed
p[eople around here talking as if they already have it.,.
please reply by e-mail as I don't often check this newsgroup.
thanks,

I have a pentium 90 with ati mach 64. ATI suggested setting
DeviceBitMap=Off in my system.ini. NO PROBLEMS!!
