You need the oil lamp from outside. Get Sophia to talk to the proff.,
then go outside and pick it up. Use the contents with the spiral designs.

What do you do at the beginning of the game ?
It's important, because there is different 'levels'.
one with the help of the woman, one alone.
One easy, one hard.
At beginning, if you get in the theater throw the cases,
you are in the easy 'level'. If you get throw the door,
you are in the hard'one.
After this, when the rubbers steal you, you can't continue
with or without the woman.
Are you on a island ?
I think so. You must use the ........ to find one of the three disc
with moon, volcano and sun.

You'll have to use something on the spiral designs so that it
will come loose. Now, the spiral is old and dirty, maybe something
liquid would help? Let me see, where did we see something containing
liquid around here? Do you see the LIGHT? Hint..hint

Now, I'm stuck somewhere else, the desert dig site. I have the spark plug, I've
started up the generator, I've looked at the mural (what does it do ?) How do I get
of this site. I assume I use the truck but it won't start without a battery.

Excuse me Willy, but I think you've got this a little bit
wrong. First of all, there are three different paths through the game,
not two as you said, and the way you get in to the theatre has nothing
to do with which path you choose. In the beginning of the game you'll
go with Sophia until you find the Lost Dialouge, then you decide wether
to take her with you, think yourself through the game or fight your way
through. And the guy posting the original article is not on an island,
he is in Tikal trying to figure out how to get the spiral designs, and
thats in the beginning of the game. The island that you talk about
is much later in the game. And I don't understand what you mean
by "rubbers that steals you".
Anyway, here is how to get the spiral design:
SPOILERS FOLLOW:
When inside the temple, talk to Sophia and make her keep Sternhart busy.
Go outside and pick up the kerosene lamp from the souvenir shop.
Go back into the temple and open the lamp. Use the kerosen on
the spiral designs, it will come loose. Use the spiral designs with
tha animal head in the temple and pull it. Voilá!

As I recall you have to:

b) pop outside and nick the bloke's lamp from his stall while he's
talking
c) use the lamp fuel to free the spiral design
d) use the spiral design in the animal head
..or something like that anyway

1: Have you examined the painting on the wall? Are you *sure* you have
examined the painting on the wall???
2: Read the book. (After you have finished 1:)
SPOILER:
1: If you look closely at the painting, you'll see a picture of a round object
on top. This opens a secret wall/room. Here you find the first stone.
2: Use the ship rib on the wall to the right, put peg in hole.
Use sunstone (?) with peg. Read Plato's Book.
