I'm new to this ng. I notice that some replies are labeled with the word
"SPOILER". What is a SPOILER? Is there a difference between a SPOILER and
someone who provides guidance or hints? Is a SPOILER someone who provides
blatant answers to puzzles? I did the latter (or so I thought) and got a
reply labeling it as such. I'd love to participate here but it really
pisses me off when someone sticks me with that label, especially when I
wasn't aware of any breach of netiquette.

I think I figured it out, thanks to Deja News. Sounds like "SPOILER" is a
label to protect those who want to figure out a puzzle on their own from
inadvertently getting an unwanted solution. It appears that proper
etiquette would be for me to put SPOILER in my own subject header if I am
providing a solution. My apologies to all.

It's more than just ruining a puzzle solution. The worst case scenario would
be the *spoil* the entire game before others have even played it! Image
wanting to see a movie or read a book and someone tells you the ending!

It's especially common (and considerate) to put a *SPOILER* warning
on game reviews if they contain things that would spoil the game
experience for anyone wanting to play them.

As for helping out with a particular puzzle, it's better to give clues to
help the person out rather than give the outright solution.
If you were also to give the rewarding results of a puzzle/game
(particularly if it's meant to be a secret) then that's considered
*spoiling*.

In addition, to those who have the thought of indicating *spoilers* in the
subject, you will notice that even if you choose to read it, the
most thoughtful of them will make certain their hint or answer
only appears in the second screen that you would view. Good for them -
that's the best way to do it; that way you know that if you choose to read
it, you can't say you didn't have enough warning.

Still, it's pretty cute that you thought someone was calling YOU a
"spoiler" :)
