All of this debate over FX verses gameplay has gotten me curious, so I'd like
to do a poll: what is the best computer game and why do you like it so much?
This can be any game, from Pong to Phantagorasmia (sp?) If you don't want
to narrow it down, state something like "all of the infocom games because I
like the writing." E-mail me the answers and I'll post the top 10 and the
reasons why they are so popular. This poll is being conducted to satify my
own curiousity about what other gamers look for in a game.

Kings Quest 3 because of the effect it has had on me as a adventure
player. It wasn't the first adventure game but it felt like magic when
I played it. The graphics were so awesome I remember delighting when
walking through the forests listening to what the birds and other
animals were saying (magic ear wax). The hilariousity of being a
literal fly on the wall. The making and mixturing of magic. The
abolishing of Manannan, the cruel, cruel wizard. The hijacking on the
open seas. The rescuing of my sister. The return home. The promising
end.

A true classic adventure which gets me all dewyeyed every time I play
it.

Hmmm, the best game ever.

Well here are a couple...

Puzzle game: The 7th Guest. To me this is the best game ever for game
play, visual and audio effects, and challenge. Many games that
try to give impressive graphics fail to provide a game, but instead
give you a movie that one walks through (i.e. Phantasmagoria,
the later King's Quest, Space Quest, Leisure Suit Larry's).

Arcade game: DOOM. Hands down. Dark forces, x-wing, tie-fighter,
wing commander, privateer, all these games I never bothered to finish
because I got tired of the game. I've played them all. But I
still play DOOM (well DOOM2 now) DOOM has great sounds effects, and
lighting. This game can scare you. Plus the ability to make
your own levels and play networked give the game added life after
you win it.

Strategy: Global Conquest. Though I truly wish there was something
a little more modern. I have yet to find another decent strategy
game that give you random worlds and scenarios with the detail and
game play as Global Conquest. Heck this game has 16 color vga
graphics at best. With limited sound effects. Yet it is still my
favorite war game.

And my last category...Cheesy Shareware Games with no sounds and pathetic
graphics:

JB. It's lame, but I wrote it. So it's the best.

=)

Course I hope to revise this list once the 11th Hour comes out in a month.

Amen! Unfortunately, as has been discussed here, Guybrush will never return.

It is only adherance to the teachings of Herman Toothrot that give me the

I seem to be one of the few people looking into the past, but
relative to their time, I would say these games are the best computer
games ever:

Zork I ( no contest )
Mail Order Monsters
Forbidden Forrest ( still play this one on my old C64 every once and awhile! )
Pac Man
Atari 2600 Raiders of the Lost Ark ( not really a computer games but... )
Space Quest 3.. The last of the great "keyboard" sierra games. *sigh*
( with music on MT-32! --by Supertramp even.. heh )

For current games, I would have to say that The Alone in the Dark series
are the best games of all time. The current Lucas Arts games are great too. 8-)

I look for games that have good action, but have a great deal of thinking and
strategy involved in decisions.

Games that have elements in them other than just blowing away everything
around you... things like fear, and vunerability. It makes things realistic.
Zork * , Alone in the Dark *, Forbidden Forrest, Beyond Forbidden Forest, etc
all would scare the hell out of me when played late at night! Especially
AITD* and Fobidden Forest * 's music!!
Even haunted house for the 2600... shesh! 8-)

For me? King's Quest for my old PCjr. I played that game from
when I was 6 till I was 8. I found so many glitches in that game that I
never got tired of it. I could make my guy walk on water or walk through
walls or anything. And for me, when I was 6, the game was a b_stard to beat.
Who cares about graphics (unless it's a racing game) just make it
interesting....

My own personal favorite (and many others as well because I get
email feedback whenever I post something like this) is.... Pool Of
Radiance for the C64. This game had it all. It had the background
makings of a good story which drew you in... it had long time playability
(took a friend and I like three months to beat)... exciting events
everytime we turned a corner... enough freedom to wander around and even
invent our own game of "take on the town hall in a huge battle"... the
quest feeling was amazing. the game stuck to what good games are made
of, ie, it didn;t try to mix action and rpg.
Well, I have enjoyed games since then such as Betrayal at Krondor
(best RPG for IBM I've played..) But it never seems to compare to the
epic struggle and fun I had with Pool of Radiance for the good ol c64
(May it live forever hah... ahh what a machine!)

Have you ever played Larry6? It is NOT 'a movie that one walks through' BUT
is one of the best adventure games ever, with the right dosage of humour and
puzzles. DOTT an Monkey Island 1 & 2 are equally good.

You're right. I despise all of those pale Doom copies, because Doom had the
best music, sound, weapons and blood.

Nope. The best strategy game ever was and is Sid Meier's Civilization.

Yes .... System Shock is also on my list, possibly the best game ever!
This game really _draws_ a person into the action and personality of what's
happening ... It *did* take a few hours to get used to the game play and get a
feel for it ... but after that ...... WOW!

give me that elevator music anyday!

Also, on my list of great games is UW1 & UW2 ... especially Underworld II.

When I was a kid playing games on my 2600, they were about speed
of reflexes, with a little accuracy necessary too. Today, nothing can
match:

Yars' Revenge -- I love when the game blows up and declairs you
the victor. HSHYSY or something like that.

Demon Attack -- I can't remember if this game ever ends or not,
but I love it.

Dragon Fire -- Has anyone else topped 250,000 points in this?
What drive I had!

As for modern computer games, nothing can enthrall me like
Civilization. There's something about that game that makes you keep
playing forever -- I think Sid Meier & the devil have a deal or
something.

System Shock. It's utterly incredible and very engrossing. THe graphics are
unrivalled (hi res with full detail) and the atmosphere created is awesome. I
completed it last week with the following "score":

Time: 20:34.33
Kills: 754
Regenerations: 103
Difficulty Index: 13
Score: 875601

The game deserves 99%, IMO. 100% for SS2 - if it ever appears.

My vote is tie between KQ I the original (not enhanced one with point
click interface) and KQ III. Neither were quite long enough, but that
take little away from the great storyline and puzzles. Graphics and
Sound really add to a game, but I don't believe anything is more
important than the storyline and puzzles in an adventure game.

Another game that got me hooked to the D&D-esque games and I still
consider as one of my favorites is Dragon Wars. I played this on my c64
and then again on my Amiga and it was fantastic. Huge universe to play in,
lots of different creatures to kill, automap, the works! Even today some games
don't automap and these guys had detailed maps like 7 or 8 years ago.

Not MY greatest game of all time, but I really enjoyed Dragon Strike. The old
SSI game where you flew a Dragon across a polygon environment and duel other
dragonriders (was based on dragonlance RPG). It was alot of fun. I liked
landing next to a camp of people and suddenly the dragons mouth would have
two kicking legs out ofit then. Then I'd take off. I didn't know if it did
any good for the dragon but it was funny to watch. But why haven't more games
emulated this? Maybe with other things to ride or a designable flying
creature made up of polygons. and HEY!!! modem support. hehhe. I'd also like
to see more Superhero games. Since Champions crapped out I've been looking
for a good superhero game and can only find somethnig where you play a
superheroess in a latex bikini. Superhero League of Hoboken was fun but it
was a little too silly. I can only wait for Indestructibles. Sounds like it
might, if it's done right, be a VERY popular game.

Star Control II. Definitely. It may not have been the
Life Waster that Civilization was, but I've never had more fun
playing a game.

Civilization, DOOM, and Elite (on my old C-64) rank right up there
