Greetings Steve, a little hint from Geggen, a Norwegian Monkey Island
fan. Since you are English this should be rather easy for you. I'm not
absolutely sure of what you mean, but the point when beating the sword
master, is to use the answers from your answers list to create the
perfect innsult. If your list of answers is inadequate (how the f..k to
you spell that word), you have to fight more with the Pirates. But as I
said the main point is to listen to the question from the Swordmaster
and use one of the answers from your list to create a good insult, and
remember she will ask the next question no mather who insults who.
Hope this helps.

You don't learn the replies of the sword master's insults. What you
have to do is use one of the other replies you learned from the pirates
to beat her. It is difficult, but if you think carefully about it, all
the replies you have can return insult to the swordmaster based on what
she says. Hope this helps

If you find it too hard you can save game before answering and if you
get it wrong you can reload and try again. This way you can find out
by trial and error if need be.

By fighting the other pirates you gain the answers, listen to what the
pirates say and use their replies on the swordmaster. You have to
fight quite a few pirates to get the answers but eventually they will
say "Wow! You are good enough to beat the Swordmater" or something
like that.

Cheers,
Anson.
