Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within

I finished Tex Murphy:Overseer yesterday and needed a new project, so I
purchased The Beast Within not knowing that Sins of the Father came
before it . Will it spoil anything to do these out of order or is it
still good on it's own??? Anybody have any thoughts on this game in
general?? I don't think anything will ever be as satisfying as the Tex
Murphy series, but you never know.

It shouldn't spoil it at all. In fact it may just motivate you to pick up a
copy of GK1 in the bargain bin somewhere. The Beast Within is hands down
one of the greatest games I have ever played. I like it just as much as
Tex, and they are similar in the sense that they both feature excellent
story, screenplay, and acting. GK2 is however, much more serious, so its
hard to compare to Tex on that level. I think you'll be in for a pleasant
surprise though. It also has a good level of challenge. Most of the
puzzles are tough but logical. I only remember one totally obscure one.

I don't think you need to play them in order. I played The Beast Within
first then Sins of the Father. It is a pretty good game but not nearly as
good as the Tex Murphy games. I think you will enjoy it. You can get Sins of
the Fathers for 10-20 bucks.

Still even if Tex Murphy is DRECK, then GK2 is nearly NOT AS GOOD! GK2's
engine WAS a complet JOKE, BULLSHIT, & probably the worse one EVER!!!

Hmm, are we talking about engines or stories? Engines don't mean much in
adventure gaming (although GK3's 3D engine looks very good.)

The story in GK2 was extremely pathetic too, IMHO. Though, the
way it was told (and researched) was amazing !! Jane Jensen
is good at that. But the plot and the whole end sequence was full
of loop holes and all the other bad things, a good novel
never has. Gabriel Knight 1 was a >much< superior and
extremely well written game.
I won't even start about Tex Murphy games.. So please don't
think that I am trying to say that they are better than
GK2.. (Yes, it's possible for a single person to dislike Myst,
Dig, Gabriel Knight 2, Tex Murphy and Broken Sword !!)

I'd reccomend you play Sins before Beast, not because it'll spoil anything,
but because the original Gabriel Knight is one hell of a game, generally
better than the sequel. Not to dismiss The Beast Within, though, which is a
beautiful experience. By the way, Tex might be good, but, IMHO, I still think
Gabriel has the edge over him.

Sure, the engine is pretty terrible, and the story isn't particularly
wonderful, and the puzzles aren't the best in the genre.
Somehow, though, I thought the whole thing worked superbly: as
entertainment, I think it's a great game, especially at bargain price.

Don't be such a PRAT. As you well know, there is nothing at all wrong with
GK2's engine or the game itself. Both games from all accounts(GK2 from
personel experience) are very good pieces of entertainment(if you can get
them to run), and are in the top rank of adventures.

My god, if GK1 didn't have some annoying puzzles (I didn't like
getting stuck on say 6 because I didn't get a bead in day 3), it
woulda inched it ever so closer to being my favorite adventure game of
all time. It's still pretty damn close, but annoyances like that made
it a 98 instead of a 100 for me, :)

Compare the Pandora(the Tex Murphy product right at that moment) with
GK2, GK2 with a great storyline but Pandora has a multi-thread
storyline. Graphics quality is very close. Don't compare adventure game
with the engine instead of storyline, the latter is the most important
for an adventure, then the puzzles design. Engine/interface is placed in
somewhere behind these two options.
