I just picked up the 7th Guest a few days ago. I'm wondering -- what
exactly is negative (besides the fact that one has given up) on using
the hint book in the library? The manual says something negative about
it (I can't quite remember.) Does it result in not seeing certain things,
or not being able to finish the game in a certain way? No spoilers
please! Thanks..

I think the negative is that you know you've cheated. It can't really
affect the story line since the puzzles actually have nothing to do with
the story.

On the extremely rare ;-) occasion that I used the book, I learned
what I learned and then reverted to a saved game before continuing. Is
there anybody who did not do that?

After you solve a puzzle, you are rewarded with a piece of the plot/puzzle.
If you solve a puzzle by using the hint book 3 times, you do NOT get to
see the corresponding piece of the plot/puzzle.

If I were to hazzard a guess, I think you would be stopped in your tracks
if you used the library too much. Maybe you can only use it a certain
number of times? Of course you can easily "cheat" the game, by simply
saving your game before visiting the book, then get the clues you
require, abort the game and reload the saved version.
Cheers

I only used the hintbook to "solve" the microscope game and missed
out on any animation that comes from solving that one by yourself.
The instruction manual warned of dire consequences if you used the
hint book too much.... is this true or just a bluff ? I've often
thought of going back and using the hint book to solve every puzzle
just to see what would happen at the end of the game, that would
take far too much time though... anyone been crazy enough to try this?

Actually, for some puzzles, if you look at the hint book, you don't get
to see the video afterwards, which is critical to understand the story line.

The only consequence of using the "clue book" is that you do not see the
animated "hint" that points toward the end of the game.

However, as these "hints" are completely unnecessary as there is no actual
"puzzle" concerning the end of the game, they are actually unnecessary
except to visually enhance your enjoyment of the game.

Using the "clue book" to solve puzzles then, does not affect the ending of
the game, but rather detracts from the challenge derived from solving the
puzzles. And after all, that's what the game is for.

If you use the clue book to solve them, what's the point in playing the
game.

Note: In my case, the clue book was a blessing when it came to the puzzle
in the microscope. I do not enjoy this type of "game" under it's
other names on the market (GO, OTHELLO, and the like), and it was
great not to have to play it to complete the game.

Everything else, I thoroughly enjoyed.

Happy gaming!

I don't think there's any penalty besides not seeing the cut-scene that normaly
appears after you've solved the puzzle, but I'm not quite sure (I finished the
game without the hint-book). Most puzzles can be solved if you try hard enough
though, and if you get stuck you can always post a message to this newsgroup....

Pray, what DO you see at the end of the microscope puzzle? I've only
been able to 'solve' it using the hint book.......

I'll try the hint I got here a few weeks ago, to see if I can solve that
@&@&#@ puzzle then....

I skept the microscope, does the microscope scene any more outstanding
than the others? did I miss big?
