I thought Dune II was a great game.

Now I see Dune (on CDROM) at the store. I just installed
a CDROM so I wonder... Is it the same? Is it better?
Is it worse? Which one is newer? Should I buy it?

I've only seen it at one store and they won't let me
return it after its opened. And they won't let me
open it there and try it out. And they don't know
anything about it. So...Who knows????

The difference is similar to the difference between pac-man and space
invaders. Two great games, COMPLETELY different.

Dune (or Dune I) came out first. The point of the game is pretty much
wander about the planet, recruiting the Fremen to help you take over Dune
from the Harkonnens. They do the mining, battling, growing plants, etc.
You are the one who directs it all. In fact, later in the game, your mental
powers grow so you can give commands from the other side of the planet.

Dune II was next. You know how to play that.

Dune on CD came out after both. It is Dune I. Same game. Has a few clips
from the movie. I have it, but haven't played as I don't have a CDROM
yet (hey, I had to get Dune anyway, I like Dune).

Do NOT buy it expecting a souped up Dune II.

There is an enormous difference betwen dune 1 and dune 2. Dune 2 is more or less
a strategic / tactic wargame and has little to do with the book Dune. It is all
fighting and destroying enemy buildings.
Dune 1 is based on the book. You are Paul Atreides and your task is to throw
the Harkonnen of the Planet with the help of the freemen. You also have to keep
you emperor happy by sending him the requested amount of spice.
You have to contact lots of freemem vests, and charm them to help you out.
You can order them to train to become soldiers, or to start harvesting spice.
The quality of the graphics is worse then dune 2 (much worse). And there are
hardly any spoken samples. (Only in the intro). The music is great though.
Dune 1 is a very boring game, I wouldn't buy it but it's your own choice.
Dune 2 is the newest.
