I, too, have finished Riven---or have I? After freeing Catherine from
prison, I returned to the telescope at the star fissure and opened the
hatch, as per her instructions. So I looked at the star field through
the telescope (so what?), and I am trapped on the original island---no
gondola cars to ride on, and the formerly open walkway is blocked by the
steel door. It seems all I can do is go back and forth from the island
dome to Ghen's office and back again; all of the linking books have the
pages torn out. Is this the end you have found? I have also found
several other endings, all of which involved my death. I was hoping for
something a little more uplifting. Is there actually a method to
'signal' Atrus as he mentioned in his writings?
By the way, did you ever get anything to happen with the chair in a
cage?---the chair I mean is a pink chair within a spherical spider-like
cage that opens and closes.

Read Cathrine's journal that was given to you in the Rebel Age.

It will give you a code to activate the hatch underneath the telescope on
the Temple Island (the one you start on).

Once the hatch is open (and you have activated the telescope) force the
telescope to go down and shatter the glass in the hatch.

You will then see the correct ending.

No, that is not the end. Remember in Catherine's journal, she mentioned
that the telescope had a stopper on the left. Open the stopper and
lower the telescope.

Even so, it has a pretty unsatisfying ending. If there is a better
ending than this, I would love to hear about it.

BTW, no, I never found a use for the chair in the cage.

Good luck,
Diana

Heh, no, you have not finished the game but you are so close
you/I can smell it. Someone may post the answer but I will only give
you a clue(s). You need to manipulate the telescope. There are two
things you need to deal with to do this that are hinted at in
Catherine's diary (I believe).

Catherine tells you to open up the fissure. You have not done
that yet. :)

The only thing this chair does is portray the "transmitter"
station for the "hologram" image that would appear in the throne room
if anyone else was there to see who was sitting in the chair. Since
you can only be in one place at a time... The only necessary feature
to the whole affair is the lever on the wall that opens the door in
the throne room which you must use at some point. Gehn apparently
used this room to appear godly and untouchable to the Rivenites.

You have not *opened* the fissure. Did you move the telescope *all* the
way down? (I'm sure you haven't.) Catherine tells you how in her journal.
When you move it all the way down, there will be dramatic results very
different than what you've seen. Opening the fissure is what calls Atrus,
if I remember correctly. There are 10 different endings, but I think only
one is a "happy ending".

I think when you're in that chair, you are projecting your image into the
temple room at the other end of that building. There's no way to be in
both places at once, though I did once get just a glimpse of someone
else's image projected there (presumably Gehn).

You still have to signal Atrus. Remember the beginning where Atrus says
that you must make a fundamental change in the age that he can detect
through the static? Remember Gehn's account of the great wind caused by
air being sucked into the great fissure until he sealed it off?

The chair is some kind of holographic projector that Gehn used to appear
godlike to the natives. It is really just an interactive background to
help flesh out the story a little.

I think you have missed some very big clues. Also you may not have read enough
of the journals. Others I watched play this game just didn't want to read the
journals thinking it was too trivial. Too bad that a little later they had not a
clue as to what was going on. Perhaps you didn't listen to what Catherine
said.

My son who thinks he can just barge thru everything and some how pysch
it all out got terribly lost and confused from not paying attention. He also
wrote NOTHING down. Suffice to say he now hates the game and bad
mouths it. I myself spent days on it and loved every minute. When I was
done I tore up all my notes so others couldn't use them serepticiously(sp?).

Luck on your starting over again, if you didn't do 'save games' in obvious
spots.

What are the ten different endings? I think I only played maybe 3...

SPOILERS...

No. You're not done yet. If you've read Catherine's journal carefully,
you'll know that there is something you must be careful NOT to do with
the telescope or you might open the fissure. Perhaps this is the way
to signal Atrus?
