After installing Alone in the Dark 4, double clicking on the desktop
icon reports "cannot find alone4.exe on the computer" (or something)
although alone4.exe sits neatly along launch.exe (desktop icon links
to launch.exe) in it's directory ?!?!

Also, does this game run ONLY in 640x480 in a window?! I see no
option to run it fullscreen, but that can be because I am unable
to run launch.exe. The game seem to start ok if I manually run
alone4.exe by myself though.

Check the properties of the shortcut to see what the startup directory is.
It must be set to the proper directory too.

Well, the properties are linked correctly to launch.exe in the right gamedir.
However, no matter what, launch.exe will report missing alone4.exe (which
lies in the same directory as launch.exe).

In any case, the game appear to start correctly by running Alone4.exe
instead of launch.exe. It would be fun though to know what launch.exe
actually does. Do you get some system settings to be tweaked and such?
My game runs in a window at 640x480 and I'm unable to run it fullscreen.
Even with desktop resolution at 640x480 I get the window bars to annoy me.

There are five editable fields in the "properties" page for most shortcuts.
One is the "target" (or as you call it link) to the file to run. Another
one is labeled "Start in", and this is the directory that will be the
current directory for the program shown in the target. It is possible for
the target path and the "start in" path to be different, and this will cause
a problem with symptoms like those you described.

In any case, I'm glad to hear you have it working now.

Thanks for your effort to help me, but the "link" or desktop icon isn't the
problem, as launch.exe gives the same error, be it from the desktop icon
(which points to the correct launch.exe, and launch.exe is running as
launch.exe gives the error), manually from the directory or autorun.inf on
cd2. They all refuse to find Alone4.exe.

In any case, I'm probably close to half finished now and haven't encountered
any problems (save the no fullscreen game window which I solved by narrowing
the monitor view so any borders were pushed outside).

Basically, what is the point of launch.exe? what does it do that running
alone4.exe directly does not?

Sorry, I haven't a clue.

What's the directory it's installed in? Maybe it can't handle a path
that contains spaces or a path that's too long...?

Or maybe it's a registry key that's corrupt? If you know how, you could
check it to see if there is a string that points to where the exe
resides.

I don't have aitd4, so it's just some general thoughts. I can't test it
myself.

It will install itself under a directory called "Alone in the Dark" so
long filenames isn't an issue. The gamedir however is not the default
one.

The only thing I can see in the registry is an empty key, and recently
I upgraded to a newer OS (win98 ME) w/new motherboard processor memory and
video card, and now it will go to fullscreen by itself, and I haven't even
reinstalled the game, so there is no registry of the game whatsoever.

Can't say what it was, but it seems to be ok now.
