Did you find a green skull? Use this on the "slug".
In the mines, you will find a "Valen's Cube". Use this on the red gate.

Well first of all, you don't need to hack away at the slug. It's particularly
vunerable to the Green skull which generates a poison venom. Hit it about four
of five times and it'll kick the bucket.
As for what to do in the mines, after searching the top level thoroughly, go to
the SE corner where there's two doors in succession, the second of which (which
is just around a corner) is jammed. This is an airlock... you need to close the
first door to open the second. Further on you'll find a chest with the key to
the eastern door in the small mine area down the stairs.
