golden egg in ZORK I

Can someone help me to open the golden egg in ZORK I without damaging
the clockwork canary? I think it's the last puzzle, I have to solve.

you can't.

spoilers follow:

your dexterity and skills aren't good enough.

someone else's are.

who do you think might be able to pick a lock that delicate?

the thief, of course!

drop the egg in the dungeon early in the game. The thief will find it.

Then when you kill the thief, and get to his lair, you'll find the egg, the
canary, and all the other treasures he might have stolen from you.

BTW, this isn't the last thing you have to solve.

You can't open it--the thief has to do it. I think you have
to let him steal it from you and then find it again later,
after he has opened it.

Of course you've already solved this, but here's another tip: instead of dropping the egg in the dungeon, if you cross paths with the thief or you find him in his lair, you can simply give the egg to him. He might attack you anyway, though.
