I 've got a copy of sanitarium, which plays fine on
Win98 but unfortunately fails on WinXP. Does anybody
have a workaround to this problem? Is there a WinXP
patch available? I have search on the web, but have
not been able to find anything.

Thanks in advance.

Well there is a general (non XP specific) patch, but all that
does is fix the bug in chapter 2.

As you haven't described what happens I'm going to guess the
game installs ok, and you can watch the intro movie, but it
crashes after a few seconds of play?

I'm also guessing you have a Radeon graphics card?

If I'm correct then you're probably out of luck.

I've yet to see/find a way to get it to run under XP that
doesn't involve replacing the Radeon with an NVidia (other
cards may work, but I've seen this first hand and in other
peoples posts)

All your assumptions were correct (except for the intro movie
part - the game crashes immediately, although it does install
ok and, yes, I have an ATI Radeon 9200 SE). So I guess it may
also have to do with the graphic card.

Thank you for your answer!

Might be something different then. Most folks that have
problems were ok to start the game and see the movie, but it
crashed once they got control of the main character in the
game proper.

That not working could be a codec problem, but no guarantee
even if you resolve that, that the game proper will work.

Have same problem. Tried many different things. Problems is ATI card. I have
a 9800 pro. Tried Omega drivers and ATI drivers. Same result. Sucks because
I heard it was a good game.

It is a good game. Luckily for me I'd played it ages ago on a
Win95 system, this was just a nostalgia trip,

It's been a while since I played this game. But when I played it, I played
on XP. I think it was something simple like right click the executable and
change the Compatibility Mode to Windows 95 or 98. I don't remember but it
can't hurt to try it.

I 've tried (at least I think so :-) all the obvious
stuff with the Compatibility Mode. My conclusion is that
the problem is probably due to the ATI graphics card, as
other people suggested.

It could be, I have a Radeon 9500 Pro now. But when I played this game I had
a Geforce 2. If I think about it later I may reinstall the game and see if
it has a problem with my ATI card. If I do I will let you know what
happened. Well, that is if I can find the game somewhere around the house, I
haven't seen it in a while!

OK I tried it on my XP Pro-Radeon 9500 Pro machine and all the videos work
fine but when I go to the game itself I get an error about sntrm.exe. I
could try some things like reducing the graphics hardware acceleration, but
I don't want to go changing my machine around for a game I don't want to
play right now. Besides I have a Win 98 machine sitting right behind me
anyway.

Trust me, been there done that, won't make a bit of difference.
If y'all want to send ATI some driver feedback saying it doesn't
work they may tweak their drivers if we're lucky.

No problem, I was interested to see if it would work if I wanted to play it
in the future, so your welcome.

It gets on my nerves that I have to upgrade all the time to keep up with the
new games that come out and then my upgrade can't play some of my favorite
older games. It's frustrating you have to have 3 or 4 different PC's or 3 or
4 OS boots to play all your games you've bought over the years. Especially
when you have been doing this for as long as me. I still have my old Chuck
Yeager Flight sim and Electrionic Arts Starflight among other maybe older
stuff around. It would be nice if I could just install this stuff on my main
PC and play for nostalgia without having to dual boot and change all my
settings. Oh Well, that's life in the PC world I guess!

I agree. It seems like an almost constant shelling out your money all the
time to keep your computer system updated for newer games - then the older
games don't work on the
new system :)

FWIW, I downloaded the game from the Underdogs and played it
for 5-10 minutes without problems and I have a Radon 9700 Pro.
Maybe I didn't play it long enough, I just walked around the
Sanitarium for a little bit, like I said ~10 minutes or so.
But it worked fine...

Maybe I will try to play it a bit longer tonight and see what happens...

First question is are you using Win XP?

Second question (if the answer is yes) is what are the rest
of your system specs? I tried both my original CD copy & the
download from there and both crashed at the same point
(seconds into the start of the game).

I was going to try the download again just in case but I
notice it's no longer available from the underdogs, just a
link to buy it now.

I have just installed Sanitarium on my XP system with Radeon 9200
graphics card and it appears to run with no problems, I am using Omeaga
driver 2.5.22 with defaut settings.

What else have you got in your system?

The previous common thread was Radeon vs Nvidia, if people
are running it ok with Radeons it'll help the rest of us if
we can confirm the differences between our system & yours.

P4 2.8 GHz

I should try the game again as I just updated my video drivers
over the weekend...

I would think that if the CD and downloaded copy fail in the same
manner then it must be something with your system. Did you try
turning down (or off) the hardware acceleration for your sound card?

Trust me I tried pretty much everything. Sound acceleration
would make it play for about 10 seconds more.

removing, then re-installing your audio and video drivers?

BTW, the CD rip I have only has the first movie. I may have to go pick

Good luck!
