I tried to install "A quiet weekend in Capri" on a laptop, which uses
Windows Vista. The game was really designed for Windows XP/98/95/ME. I
managed to get it to work - sort of, but it needs a bit of fine-turning. I
can's seem to clearly access the start menus, encountering a big black
square instead, and from then on, everything is in Italian instead of
English.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
John

I can't help you about laptop settings as I don't have one. Maybe someone
else can help you on that. I played the game in Italian language with
English subtitles which I found best. I think you can choose English but you
only get English signs and subtitles but the characters all speak Italian
which was nice. I liked this game. Beautiful photography.

Mary,

I agree with you about the beautiful photograph, etc., but the problem I am
having is getting access to log-in screen where I can change things. I end
up with Italian, that's it. No options for English or sub-titles, or
anything else. I just have a big black square where these options are
suppose to be. I blame it on Windows Vista.

Well, it could be to do with Vista. I don't have Vista. I played A Quiet
Weekend in Capri in Win 98SE - (I am behind the times), but I like Win 98
better as its not as cluttered than future OS's and so far its played most
games I've played and I have Win XP on a partition, for newer games like
Dreamfall which I'm playing now. Quiet Weekend was spoken in Italian, but
you should have options for subtitles and English audio with no subtitles I
think. Its been a while since I played it. If you don't get any replies
here, you could try emailing the game developers an Italian father and son.
I did that one time and they were very helpful. I played "Anacapri" the
sequel which was OK but I liked A Weekend in Capri better. Is your laptop an
older model though that may not be the problem.
You could try contacting the game publisher. I once contacted the game
developer Gey Savarese but I don't know if he could help anyway. Check the
game box or manual to see if there are any contacts about technical problems
with the game. . Maybe someone here will post about your problem. Just some
ideas. Its annoying when you can't get a game going..

Been talking with John in another newsgroup, thought I would bring it
back here. John, you are using the Intel 965 Express video chipset
(built into the motherboard) in your laptop with the 'out of the box'
default Vista graphics drivers. You should have much better luck if
you download and install the latest drivers for your specific chipset
and O/S. So, if you feel up to it, go to this link to download the
drivers you'd need. Run the file and it should step you through
everything.

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=N&ProductID=2529&DwnldID=15883&strOSs=153&OSFullName=Windows%20Vista*%20Home%20Premium,%2032-bit%20version&lang=eng

That or go to Intel's site and search Support their for your product
and O/S, either way should get you what you need. I believe there's
also a utility you can download that will identify the chipset for you
if there's any concern that you or I got it wrong. :-)

It will be good if this fixes your problem and gets the game going. Post the
outcome here.

I actually got a response from GGE (Got Game Entertainment), the makers of
"A quiet weekend in Capri," themselves. They said the game is not compatible
with Windows Vista, for it was released four (4) years ago, before Vista was
even in Beta testing. However, "AnaCapri," a later release, is Vista
compatible. Yet, in talking to GGE, they were a bit surprised that I got "A
quiet weekend in Capri" working in Vista anyway, and wanted to know how I
did it.

It was not so much the fixes and solutions coming forth through this
newsgroup, for once I loaded a missing .dll file from Microsoft, it worked -
well, sort of. As I had said before, the only real issue I have is the
initial start-up screen at the beginning of the game is a big black square
instead, even though I can see cartoon graphics all around, and the voices,
sounds and music work just fine. This is the screen where one apparently
needs to type in their name, pick the language of choice, choose subtitles,
etc. I simply get around this by clicking all over the screen and the actual
programs then starts. Unfortunately, for me, everything is in Italian.

However, GGE told me how to modify a select file to change the language from
Italian to English. Yet, unless GGE takes an interest in this older game
again, and developers some type of fix or patch to make it truly Vista
compatible, I'm afraid this is the best it will be for me on Vista.

Windows Vista came pre-loaded on my new laptop. I soon discovered that it is
compatible with very little from Windows XP.

And I've had few ( if any) problems after switching to Vista,
including with older games that never even knew Vista existed or was
going to exist. I've only had one business program, QuickBooks Pro,
that I *had* to upgrade in order for it to work.

I'd still suggest you update your video card drivers. Drivers from the
chipset maker will function much better than any generic driver that
shipps with Vista. Who knows, it may start working for you!

That's a good suggestion. Vista runs fine for me and I have games
installed on my PC that go back twenty years. I am even using 64bit
Vista and things can't be any better.

The problem that the original poster is running into is very likely an
issue with integrated graphic chipset. He would very likely have the
same problems even when using WinXP. I recently purchased SF:Tunguska
and the back of the DVD-case says "laptops and integrated graphic
chipsets not supported".

Recent games that are less demanding hardware-wise should probably run
on such setup but at least the graphic drivers have to be updated.

Thats good to know. I don't have Vista but so many people I know personally,
don't like it and prefer Win XP. I have Win 98 and Win XP on another
partition which so far has worked fine for me, but I was dreading getting
Vista. I wouldn't be getting 64 bit though.

That could be the problem.

Sometimes graphic drivers on any computer whether desktop or laptop are not
updated for long periods of time especially once the video card gets older.
And to see if games are less demanding, you would have too check the game
requirements before buying the game I guess.

You might like Anacapri OK and hopefully it would work on your laptop,
though it would be better if you can get A Quiet Weekend to work. I would
keep trying unless you feel you can go no further.

You mean there is no English sub titles at all? Mine was in Italian which I
thought was more authentic, but I had English sub titles which worked out
fine.

Did you get the language changed from Italian to English to play the game?

Maybe a laptop is limiting when it comes to some games because of integrated
graphics as Noman said. You could see if there are any new drivers for your
laptop as Craig mentioned.
