I don't know about MI2, but it *IS* possible to die in MI1. Near the
beginning of the game, Guybrush claims that he can "hold his breath for ten
minutes" (as a special skill when applying for piratehood). Later on, he
is trapped underwater, and if you can't solve the VERY simple puzzle in ten
minutes, Guybrush will drown. The longest I've ever seen anyone work on this
puzzle before solving it was about two and a half minutes.

The only way to die in monkey island 1 that I know of is to stay under
water for ten minutes, and then guybrush just floats in the water. That's
it... then just restore a saved game.

Never played that damn game, but I assume you can't! You normally can't in
puzzle games like Monkey Island, DOTT, Sam&Max etc.

I don't know about MI2 but in the first you can die. Try going for a swim off
the end of the pier. However it is similiar to Sierra where you can restore
to a saved game.
You can't die in MI2. I didn't thought there was a possibillity to die in
Monkey Island either, but apperantly there is.

You don't have to be constantly worrying about dying all the time in a

I don't know.

Depends which version you're playing. Monkey Island 2 - no chance.
Threepwood is invincible! But in Monkey Island 1 - leave Threepwood
underwater for long enough and he drowns. Quite funny in fact.

My Dad took 9 and a half minutes to solve that puzzle. It took me 30 seconds.

Are you sure? Everyone is saying you can die if you stay under water for
ten minutes in Monkey I. Why wouldn't the same thing work in Monkey II?

I dunno, but I tried it. You are underwater at one point. Maybe I just
didn't wait long enough, but I could have sworn I waited a good 15 minutes
or so. Maybe I'll go back and try again.

Because the story is told in flashback! That means that Guybrush can't
die, or he wouldn't be there to tell the story.
More specifically, you can spend ten minutes underwater and drown.
(Although I think they changed it to 15.) But all that happens is:
the scene fades, and the scene of Guybrush telling the story comes back
up. When he describes how he died, for some reason Elaine suspects he
is lying. She insists that he tell the truth this time, and the scene
where you died starts again.
There are at least two places in MI2 where this can happen: underwater,
when you have the Monkey's Head statue (which prevents you from swimming
to the surface, otherwise you do), and in LeChuck's fortress, if you
fail to deactivate the Machine in time.

Probably because you don't get the opportunity to be under water in Monkey II!!

Sure you do. You can't win the game w/o being underwater.

Yes you do. When you search for the Mad Monkey, you dive under water
to get it. If you stay there for 10 min, you'll die and the interface
will change to reflect it.

Forgive mt memory lapse...but where are you submerged in water in MI2? Or are

Didn't you have to go diving all over the place to find a map piece
at some stage?
I think I tried every box on the grid before engaging
the brain to work that one out :-)
/Markie.
Spoiler Alert !
The shopkeeper who has a piece of the map wants the head of the Mad
Monkey which is a sunken sailing ship. You have to find out in the
library where the ship sank then hire Captain Kate to take you there.
Guybrush dives in to get the head back.
In the easy version you can simply buy the map from the shopkeeper for a
small amount.

Doh!
Of course...thank you :)
