Now that I've gotten Myst to run on my system, I need
some hints. I'm still in the first age (since I don't
know how to change ages). I have roamed all over the
island, and I haven't found anything new in a few
hours.

1. I know how to set the clock on the clock tower.
What setting do I use to actually reach the clock
tower. I'm assuming there is some kind of bridge
that appears with the right setting.

2. The message from Atrus to Catherine says: "I've left
for you a message of utmost importance in our
fore-chamber beside the dock. Enter the number
of Marker Switches on this island into the imager
to retrieve the message." I've entered the chamber
by/under the dock and found the sheet labeled
"Settings--Dimensional Imager", and I found the
buttons underneath this sheet. I tried entering
numbers from 6 to 9, but nothing happened. Am
I counting the wrong switches? I've found 7 or 8,
which is why I tried a range from 6 to 9. What am
I doing wrong?

3. The domed room has a contraption that looks like a
dentist's chair. Given the control panel above it,
I'm assuming it is the time machine. How do I use
it?

4. I know how to get into the library and take the
elevator to the tower, but the 2 exits at the top
are always blocked. I've tried rotating the tower
at the map, but perhaps I haven't reached the right
stage. Suggestions?

5. How do I get into the bomb-shaped device? I have
determined that the entrance is connected to the
generators, but I'm not sure what settings to use.
I have tried flipping the electrical switches at the
top of the poles, but they won't stay down.

I have a lot more questions, but hints on a few of these
should be enough to get me started. I'm new to the
world of adventure games, especially since I just added
my CD-ROM, but I am having a lot of fun!

Thanks,

Linda

P.S. Yes, the key to getting Myst to work was updating
the sound and video drivers (and following the README
instructions included with the drivers :).

!!!! SERIOUS SPOILERS FOLLOW - Proceed only if you've given up all hope !!!!

That's a pretty hefty list that you have there, Linda. Christmas isn't for
another couple of months yet, but I'll try giving you what help I can.

The "marker switches" referred to in the game are the various switches
strewn about the island of Myst. One of the first things that you should do
is go throughout the entire island and flip on each of these switches. There
will be a marker switch for each site on the island - the dock, the clock
tower, the observatory, etc. I think you were right in that there are eight
switches in all, and this is the number that you must put into the imager.
After putting in the number, are you returning to the imager and pressing
the large red button on the machine to activate the image?

In the library, there's a picture on the wall of Myst island. Every marker
switch that you turned on will be shown on this picture. Also shown is a
representation of the observatory tower. Since you mentioned that you've
tried rotating the tower, I'm assuming that you already know all of this.
What you may not have realized, however, was that as you rotate the tower
in the picture, the ray coming from the tower turns red as it passes over
an active marker switch. When this happens, it means that the tower is now
facing one of the marker sites. Try pointing the tower at each of the sites
and then going back up it in the elevator. You will notice now that the
doors are open at the top of the ladder, and facing out at the site you
pointed it to. Now try this - climb back down the ladder and go around
the elevator. There's another ladder on the opposite side of the elevator,
and when you climb it, it brings you up to a plaque hanging on the wall.
Ordinarily, this plaque is blank. When the tower is facing a marker site,
however, it reveals a clue that will help solve the problem at that site.

I forget exactly what clues it gives you, but I know that it helps solve
the mystery of what settings to use in the star observatory (not a time
machine) and the settings required to activate the power in the spaceship
(the bomb-shaped device). I believe it also tells you the time that you
have to set the clock for in order for a bridge to appear.

Hope you're enjoying Myst, but I have to warn you that the puzzles only
get harder. You may want to post another message on the Internet requesting
a walkthru.

Hope this helps. Enjoy Myst.
