I fianlly got around to starting GK3, and the game crashes with
an "exception error" about two minutes into the game. I've tried
fiddling with my CD-drive settings *and* copied all the.brn files
to my hard drive.

The game *still* demanded CD1 and then crashed!!!

Anybody know how to get around this?

I had the game crash several times. But not right after installation. I did
have an error when installing on CD 1, where it mentioined that Day123.brn
had some kind of error, but Day 123.brn is on a couple of the other CD's so
it is not a problem. I copied it to the DATA directory on the hard drive
from Disc 2 I think. It is probably on more than one CD so as to prevent
frequent disk swapping. Did you do a Full installation? It takes ages, but
its worth while. Did you copy all 5 .brn files from the CD's to the DATA
directory on the hard drive?

I don't remember getting any Fatal exception error two minutes into the game
as yuo said. But I did have some crashes that iw ould suddenly crash to the
Windows desktop. What seemed to help somewhat, though it may not help you
was to clean CD1 with soap and water - then dry with soft cloth. Thats what
someone suggested to me and its what I do now. Even small scratches or
fingerprints can cause seemingly unrelated error messages.

Another thing I did which helped was I found the fan on my CPU was very
dusty so I took it off and cleaned it, and after that the game didn't crash
nearly as much. An overheated CPU can cause such things, though it would
show up as the same problem on other games (which it did with me).

Your case may be none of the things I have suggested, but they are worth
considering.

Isn't there a patch available to prevent such crashes?

Yes. I did a full installation and I copied all the .brn files to the
data directory. Didn't help.

I also have a CPU temperature monitoring feature in my BIOS. I set
it to "insanely paranoid" and the alarm hasn't gone off yet.

Hehe! - well there is always the possibility of a defective CD. If you
bought the game within the last 90 days they should replace it free. After
that, they usually charge $10.00.

When I first started GK3 a few weeks ago, and had the crashes, I wrote to
Sierra support and they had some suggestions.. My solution was nothing to do
with their suggestions, but it might be worth your while to contact them.
