Help!!
I'm stuck in the last puzzle of the game ( I suppose...), where Max has to
navigate a chessboard full of black goo while his "dark double" blocks his
way.
I shall assume that the goal of the puzzle is to get the 3 orbs from the
statues, but whenever I manage to reach one I can't either touch or pick the
globe. Does it have to be done in a certain sequence? Do I have to get the
lighted orb first? Do I have to beat Max's shadow to it?

Thanks in advance to whomever will help me!

Yes, you have to go to the orbs in the order they light up. The strategy which
worked for me, which I got off a walkthru somewhere, was to just keep your
finger on the mouse button and KEEP MOVING. Whenever you CAN move, DO. I know
it sounds foolhardy, but this worked much, much better for me than trying to
outrun the black ooze. I don't remember having to beat Max's shadow to the
orbs, just get there as fast as the mouse will let you. Try it, if it works
for me it could work for anyone! :)

I'm a living testament to that. I only vaguely remember the puzzle but
I think there are only a limited number of combinations and I was able
to do it relatively easily just having a hit and miss approach, in fact
my hard drive was in such bad shape at the time that I couldn't load or
save games and I was playing it for the long haul and it kept going and
going and going and going and it was really late, like the next week,
and I was slumping over, delusional, the works, and I still was able to
do the puzzle without having to exit the program (which would have
meant my death).

Thank you...it worked!
:-)
part of the problem was that movement is a real pain in this game ( which is
however excellent under any other aspect ) and I was really having a hard
time directing Max where I wanted him to go.

Thanks again.
