I absolutely loved this game. I was attracted to the horror plot,
history, and the character development/live action dialogue. I'm
primarily a reader, so story is everything to me. Part of a good story
are strongly developed characters that I learn to care about, empathize
with. GK2 had a lot of characters like that. I think the live action
sequences and pictures helped me relate more and become attached to them. I
also especially liked the fact that many of the main characters were
drawn in shades of grey - good and bad sides, rather than each character
either good or evil, much like Anne Rice's vampires.

Are there any games that pull off the above? I like Horror, Scifi,
Mystery, Politics. I've played a lot of the big games like Last Express,
Sanitarium, Circle of Blood, Blade Runner, Amber, etc. I really liked
these games, but this was the first game that really grabbed me
completely. I've played the first area of Sins of the Fathers but didn't
care much for the graphics, pretty primative, like earlier Kings Quest or
something. I guess I've been spoiled. I'm assuming I'm going to have to
wait for this summer's GK3.

You might try Black Dahlia. I found it to have a very deep immersive story.

You might like 'Phantasmagoria', 'Laura Bow:Dagger of Amon Ra', 'Shivers2'
or 'Harvester'.
The Tex Murphy's are good too, try 'The Pandora Directive' or 'Overseer'.

That should keep you busy until GK3.

Dark Side of the Moon, while sci-fi rather than horror, is equally good in
the plot and immersion departments. You can't beat The Beast Within--it's
one of the all-time greats--but you can equal it.

If you like horror stories, you should definetely try the Blackstone
Chronicles! It's also a great adventure game.

Oh, Robert, NO! How could you possibly suggest either Shivers 2 or
Harvester as worthy successors to The Beast Within? I thought Shivers 2
to be little more than slider puzzle crap with some torturous and
pointless timed sequences, while Harvester was simply laughably bad.
Although I've always felt the Tex Murphy series tends to be overrated,
at least TPD and Overseer have a similar style to The Beast Within.
Phantasmagoria is also similar, but plays (if that's the right word for
what virtually amounts to an FMV slideshow) even worse.

Unfortunately, while they are several games that resemble The Beast
Within in terms of type, none of them are anywhere near as good. Black
Dahlia was okay, but I wouldn't want to be held responsible for actually
recommending it to anyone.

Agreed on your last point, though. Perhaps the original poster should
just wait until GK3.

I'm assuming that you played GKI. If not, you have to. Sure, graphics
aren't great but fantastic story line. Also, Dark Side of the Moon and Black
Dahlia. Granted, some of the puzzles in BD are difficult and may not seem
relevent to the story but still a good game.

Take care and good luck.

IMO, it was the most overrated adventure game I've
ever played. But if you like sci-fi mystery thrillers
then get Pandora Directive, it's much better done:
the mystery aspect is better, it's more sci-fi
than GK2,and it's puzzles are much much more varied
and infinitely more interesting and logical.
Another classic I recommend is Indiana Jones:
Fate of Atlantis. Those are my two favourite
adventure games ever.
Don't settle for second rate!

Have to agree with you regarding Pandora Directive and Indy:FOA. Played both
2ce and enjoyed them thoroughly, even the 2nd time around (Ok, so I played
FOA several times :>). Actually Indy FOA ranks just behind GKI - Sins of
the Father. I liked The Beast Within and have played that twice but didn't
think it compared with the first GK game. It had a good plot but just
didn't draw me in as the first did. Then again, I'm not a big fan of FMV.

Oh well. Take care and am looking forward to GK3.

I like those two games but I reckon The Journeyman Project 3 : Legacy of
Time is the best Adventure game out

GK2 kind of started off poorly, the FMV, atmosphere, etc. left something
to be desired. But from King Ludwig's castle on, I thought it was
great! I really got involved with the characters and story.
