What video card are you using? Make sure you have the latest drivers for
your card and try reinstalling DirectX.

Laurent,

You're not the only one with this problem, by far. I could never get
the demo to work for the same reason (and I not only had the most
up-to-date DirectX installed, but confirmed that it was all working
correctly by using DXDIAG), got the exact same error message. I
recently gave the file to my girlfriend to use on her computer, and
she got the same message herself...again, with the most current
version of DirectX installed.

I contacted Sierra about the problem and they were unwilling to offer
any kind of support on the demo. :-(

I've got the on Board Video of the Via MVP-4 Chipset, I'll have to look
at their website for new drivers.
But how should I reinstall DirectX? It cannot be uninstalled, and the
Installer refuses work. Btw, I had a freshly installed DirectX.

That's Sierra all over. I tried the Homeworld demo on my PC and it
completely refused to work. I contacted them and they told me to buy the
full game - then they'd help.

???

I'm not buying a game whose demo refuses to work for the possibility that
the full thing will....

Bad news: You may have to use DX6, and DX6 drivers for the vid card.
That's what I had to do, because of a Trident/VIA lawsuit, there's no
new support for DX7 for motherboards with VIA chipsets and Trident
onboard vid.

Since it's quite difficult (maybe impossible) to uninstall DirectX and your
on-board video card can't do the thing the only solution seems to be: Buy a
video card. Other than that format your disk, install windows and then
directx 6.1. However, buying a card seems more logical.

That seems incredibly sleazy to me. I've never heard of such chutzpah from a
game company.

Thanks for the Info!

I want to use Windows only for gaming (and Linux for all other things) ,
therefore I will try to reinstall Windows 98.
But I have no idea of how to do this :-(
If I format my disk, can I boot of a DOS Disc and then install Windows
from that Disc?

First you create a Windows start up disk (from Control Panel>Add remove
programs). Then you reboot your computer with that disk and select: Start
with CD-ROM support. Once in dos prompt you give: "format c: /q". (Or
whatever is the letter of your disk). After the formatting is complete
(Warning: everything on the disk will be erased after the format so make
sure you have backed up everything important first!!!) you insert the win98
cd rom and give: "setup". Follow the instructions and all will be fine. (I
have to tell you of course that in order to install win98 you must have a
win98 cd rom and a serial number :)

Before I had installed DirectX 7, I already had installed Directx 6
(German Version) but it showed the same error message.

<sarcasm> Microsoft really shows how good software has to be
made.</sarcasm>

But well... gonna format c:

P.S:
Cruel: I have a DirectX 6 Installer that first seems to install DirectX
6 but when I start dxdiag, no Change has been made. Does the Installer
deletes DX6 right after installing it!!?

You can't uninstall directx even if you want to install a previous version

As far as DirectX:
I wonder if you un-zip(extract) the DX6core.exe with Winzip, then manually
copy all the files into their proper directories (c:\windows\system\*.dll,
*.sys, etc. and c:\windows\inf\*.inf), if it would work?
(I figure, 'someone who is ready to drastically re-format their HD would be
in a good position to experiment'. Be sure to back-up all files you may
over-write (use Winzip to archive those whole directories) )

Well, I re-installed Windows 98, all worked fine, but GK3 still gives me
the same error :-(
I have installed the DirectX Version that comes with GK3, Version 6.1

I wonder if Sierra has any help for me :-(

I had this exact problem, and sierra managed to mention somethign of
help in the middle of all the gibberish;

Check your hardware graphics acceleration settings (It's on the
"Performance" tab of the system properties config thing, which you'll
find on the control panel,or by selecting "properties" from the
context menu of 'My Computer' -- click the "Graphics" button); I had
mine pushed back to "basic functions only" to fix some problem yonks
ago. Bumping it up to "Most accelerator functions" (Settign it to
full caused my comptuer to crash when I started the game -- probably
my ancient video card) made GK3 find directdraw, and it's worked pretty
well ever since.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, that was the solution. Sierra has answered me today with the same
mail, and now I'm finally able to play the game :-))
Thanks, anyway.
