MINI-REVIEW: Outcry (Sublustrum)

Designed by Georgiy Beloglazov, Denis Tambotsev, Pavel Bogdanov, Alexey

(Review copyright 2008, Andrew Plotkin <erky...@eblong.com>)

(Note: _Sublustrum_ is the original Russian title. The game appears as
_Outcry_ in the English-speaking world. _Outcry_ is neither _Fallout_ nor
_Far Cry_. Please adjust your expectations.)

The "hallucinatory sequence of surreal subworlds" is not untrodden territory
for adventure games. You've played them before. (Heck, *I* wrote one.) Nor
will you be surprised, in such a game, when a grim backstory begins filling
itself in from strange letters and diaries.

So _Outcry_ gets no awards for blindingly original modes of storytelling.
But so what? It plays its hand deftly. Its settings are whimsical,
surprising, and evocative. Its artwork is gorgeous -- fantastic imagery
layered with dynamic visual effects. (The first scene plays out as an
ancient film, complete with sepia tones and flickering scratches. Subsequent
scenes have their own distinctive styles.) I said "whoa" a lot. The puzzles
are satisfying. I am happy that I played it.

I can quibble, but I quibble with love.

- The translation (from Russian) is bad. This is a pity, because the writing
is decent, as far as I can tell, and the English voice actors do their best
with what's put before them. But the actual text of the game -- spoken and
written -- is barely grammatical; it's full of off-by-one synonym choices
and opaque idioms.

This is only a quibble, because I never had any problem understanding what
was meant. I just felt like everything had been written by a reclusive
Russian professor with a thick accent. (In fact, it would have worked better
if the English voice actors had *had* thick accents.)

- The visual focus was mostly good, but a couple of important objects were
too small and brown to see easily.

- A lot of sound puzzles. If you have hearing trouble, don't even try
_Outcry_. You need to spend a lot of time tweaking controls and listening to
the results.

- The first sound puzzle was enjoyable. The second one was not; it made no
sense to me even after I gave up and read a walkthrough. The third one -- I
think the creators must have perfect pitch. I couldn't make a dent until I
installed a piano app on my iPhone and started writing down pitches. (But I
*did* solve it, and it was fun to solve.)

- I'm pretty sure one of the diagrams in the game had two labels swapped.
This made its puzzle way too difficult.

- The game is small.

Short games are fine. Nothing says every game has to be a forty-hour
monster. _Outcry_ is the right length for its story. But I think it gives
short shrift to its game mechanics. There are several nifty puzzle elements,
but most of them are used just once each. A longer game would have had room
to develop and vary these elements, which would have made for a much richer
puzzle experience. (I'd even go for a short game which used *fewer* nifty
elements, but did more with each one.)

But these are quibbles. Overall, _Outcry_ is a tasty treat, and I hope the
creators stay in the business.

(Hey, a mini-review that was actually short. Surprised?)

Not surprised; happy that you are still writing reviews (and I thank you
for putting in the effort).

Even though I haven't played a game for a year now, I still plan on getting
a few for this winter.

Hey Mick, haven't seen you in ages either. Have you got an updated system
yet? Playing anything at the moment? I actually re-played 7th Guest in
Dosbox and just finished it. I got stuck on it a few weeks ago and stopped
playing, then I went back and found I hadn't done the chess puzzle in one of
the rooms. So I couldn't move on to the knives puzzle on the door which
leads to the house thing near the end. I really like that game. I also just
bought "Evil under the Sun" a few days ago on sale.I saw it a while ago but
didn't feel like paying full price. I had played "And then there were none"
which was OK but nothing special.
You have to play it in Win. XP. I have both Win 98 and Win XP on my
computer. So I use win 98 for some older games and Win XP for newer ones. I
couldn't get Evil under the Sun to play the video part very well, and sound
and mouse were not right, but I seemed to be ok for requirements, so I
reinstalled my Catalyst drivers for Win XP for my ATI 9000 Pro , then
installed 4 in 1 Via drivers version 15 I think, then DirectX 9C, and Direct
Draw and AGP texture and the other one - all were enabled. Before
reinstalling those things, AGP texturing was not enabled. So now, the game
works fine and no video or any other slowdown problems. Ive reinstalled
those things many times in the last 15 years at various times for a game and
it hasn't helped, but other times it does. I think you might have to do them
in a certain order though.
I have no other games waiting to be played. I played Sherlock Holmes Nemesis
and liked it. Played Dracula Origin and it was just OK.

I have been busy all year with my new passion (car racing).

Racing has slowed down a bit this month, and I have a few unplayed Nancy
Drew games on the shelf. And about half of the first season of Sam and Max
episodes are still unplayed.

We've had 3 snowstorms in the last 10 days. Winter started early this year
in second week of Nov. Snow gets cleared up fast but has snowed more than
usual. Last year was like this too, but year before, there was no snow till
almost Feb. and ski resorts north of Toronto had to close down. I guess they
are happy this year. You would need better weather to snow here. Not long
ago, I saw Calgary getting a lot of snow. Do you still race in bad weather?
This is the time to stay indoors and play computer games, if you have any to
play.

Been playing a few games that wouldnt run properly on my old machine.
Unfortunately
the first one, Culpa Innata, has to be one of the most stunningly dull games
in the history
of gaming - I gave up with it, a real stinker.
The second was Sherlock Holmes (Arsene Lupin one), the problem with this one
was
motion sickness which is a shame because it looked as if it was going to be
a good`n.
I replayed Runaway 1+2 which I enjoyed.

I think Evil Under The Sun is just one of those "casual games" and not a
full blown adventure like the other Agatha Christie games (I could be wrong
though;-))

I`ve played Dracula Origin but I preferred Dracula 3 which I think came out
around
the same time. I`m going to have to looked through my unplayed batch to see
if there`s
anything there - I've still got Monkey Island 4 but I`m not sure it will
work with Vista.

What make is it? How much RAM? Does it play any of the older games you
couldn't get to run in Win 98? I have looked at laptops off and on but never
found one I really liked. I like anti glare screens as the glossy ones which
most of the laptops are, give me a migraine. Its the reflection that bothers
me. I like matte screens like my LCD with my desktop. But if I find a laptop
with anti glare screen, I might get one sometimes. I saw a couple which were
8.9" screen - too small. I think Dell had some with anti glare but you have
to order it and I like to see things in person that will be the one I am
getting. I have never ordered anything on line except for DVD movies, which
is much different from ordering a laptop. Did you buy your laptop online?

I never noticed motion sickness on Sherlock Holmes, Nemesis. I go slowly in
games that might cause motion sickness. Though I don't think it would make
me nauseated. It can cause me to be a bit disoriented. In some games if the
graphics are flashing or very bright colours, I have to turn the colours
down or I can get migraine headache from it.

Its a full blown adventure as far as I can see. I am not sure what you mean
by "casual games". "Evil under the sun" is about Poroit the French
detective. The game is a bit similar to "And Then there were None" which was
an adventure game. I didn't play "Murder on the Orient Express" another
Agatha Christie adventure game. So far "Evil Under the sun" is quite good.
Not a lot of puzzles so far, but more interaction with people and trying to
figure out what they are up to and trying to solve a murder which hasn't
happened yet so far..

You're lucky you have any unplayed batch. I don't have anything after Evil
under the Sun till something else comes out I might want to play. I saw that
Dracula Vampyre just came out, but I think I've played enough Dracula games
for now.
I don't have Vista or know anything about it, so you are ahead of me on
that. You would have to try Monkey Island 4 on your laptop to see if it
would work. If you have your old desktop, it would probably work on it. I
liked Monkey Island 4 OK. But for me, the first two games in that series
were the best.

Definitely! It's called rallycross, and we race in any weather. With all
the snow lately, the racing has been on snow and ice. November was nice
weather, so it was all on dirt and gravel.

Its probably good for practicing skid control. I don't think I'd want to do
it though. I don't drive on icy or snowy roads except when I had to. I had
to go to the store yesterday and even though I go along a main road, it was
not salted, so had to be very careful. They salt and plow the highways
around the city before they get to the roads. We had light snow today but
nothing much. Its going to rain later this week and a lot of the snow will
disappear, after all this trouble :).But thats what its like here,
snows/rains/freezes and the cycle continues a lot of the winter.

Mary - You should really get the W95 (or was it W98) .EXE file for 7th
Guest and 11th hour. They both play much faster and better in Windows. I
remember thinking I was almost jogging from room to room. Made my replay
of 7th Guest much more fun.

Ah yes, I remember you mentioning this before.

I never experienced it in many years of gaming until I played Doom on the
Playstation. Since then here have been a few. I might give SH another go in
the
New Year.

"Casual games" is a term usually given to hidden object games.

As it happens I was mixing Evil Under The Sun up with Death on the Nile
which *is* a casual
game. I`ve just checked and found that I`ve actually played Evil Under The
Sun.

Yes I still have my old computer or "The Beast" as it`s known:-)

If I`m not back on before Christmas have a good one.

Thats great.

Its pretty good. You being English might like it as some of it takes place
in the Tower of London and Buckingham Palace other London sites. Well done
graphics and I liked the acting.

I am still not sure what they are after reading the above link. Sounds like
they are trial games or parts of games. Don't know about hidden object games
though.

I've never played Death on the Nile. I got Evil under the Sun at a Staples
store here. Its just a regular adventure game. I like it. Acting and
graphics are good. I like Poirot's French accent and the English accents in
the game are quite entertaining.
too. One thing though - though it didn't spoil the game for me, there is a
lot of walking to various places on the island. A map would have been
better. The room numbers of the various characters in the game are on a
piece of paper in inventory, but doesn't have a map for areas you have to go
to on the island.

Same to you Mick.

Mike, I used Dosbox 0.65 version and it seemed to run OK for me at least. I
didn't notice any slowness, or maybe I play games slow because of slow
thinking :) I haven't tried Win 98.EXE file and haven't played 11th Hour in
quite a while. I l iked 7th Guest best, but I liked 11th Hour too. Somehow
what comes to mind is a puzzle in 11th Hour which involved mice? or
something like that? Is Win 98.EXE file only used for 7th Guest and 11th
Hour games? or for all older Dos games?

I should mention that I mostly use Win 98 but used Dosbox for 7th Guest.
Also, after I finished the game, I saw I had a patch for the Dos version on
a small floppy which I didn't install because I didn't see it at time of
installation. It was in the game box. But other than one puzzle which I had
to do twice, because it didn't seem to work firist time (maybe a glitch),
the game worked fine. I think, though not sure, that you don't need Win
98.EXE file when playing the game in Dosbox since you are playing the game
in Dos when you use Dosbox. You would need the Dos patch, which is the one I
forgot to install but got through the game anyway. I use Win XP on a
separate partition, but most times use Win 98, except for games which need
Win XP.

I just found the newer .EXE easy to use with XP. Just put the file in
the 7th guest folder and click it. I have never used Dosbox but know it
works well after getting it set up. I remember an EXE for 11hour but
don't remember if it was different then the 7th guest EXE (but I think
so). And YES the mouse board game is a pain as it is very random so
there is no walk-though for it.

(I remember I needed to buy a CD drive (2X sony)and a SoundBlaster card
so I could play 7th Guest in my W98 386DX computer.)

I've used Dosbox a few times for older games. Dosbox is a great program and
the programmers who created it deserve a lot of credit. I havent replayed
11th Hour for quite a while. Maybe I will try it one of these days. If I
ever need to play 7th Guest in Win XP, I will look for the EXE file you
mention. Thanks for info.

I think a lot of people had to upgrade something to play 7th Guest. I had
to buy a new video card and remember the guy at the computer store said "are
you buying a new video card just to play one game?" I said "Yes its a new
game and everybody says how ahead of its time and how good it is.". My
computer parts were up to date and above system requirements (except for the
video card).I think I had a 512 KB? Cirrus Logic at the time and the game
wouldn't run, so I got a 1 MB card and it was OK. I had the original
Creative labs soundblaster at the time and it lasted for years before I had
to get a SBLive. But video cards needed to be updated a lot more often.

Yep - I just, 2 weeks ago, updated my ATI X-700 video card to a ATI
HD3650 to play TR Underworld. (which I class as an adventure game, I
know others don't). After 7th Guest the Tomb Raider games keep me
updating. This new one has outstanding graphics!

I think the HD3650 will be a good card, but I still have an AGP card and not
sure if it would be worth it to upgrade just my video card. My ATI 9000 Pro
has been a good card, but its lagging behind my other computer parts, but I
haven't upgraded anything for a few years, so sometimes I wonder now if I
should just buy an updated computer box from Staples, rather than upgrading
my computer parts. I've never played Tomb Raider games. I'm not really into
actioin/combat games except I liked American McGees Alice which I would call
a combination action/adventure. It had a strong adventure story to it. But a
lot of action, jumping, fending off enemies, etc.

Yes, Upstate New york is not far from where I am. Its not too cold today but
was yesterday. We have had several snow storms in the last few weeks. Not a
lot at one time, but frequent and causes a lot of traffic problems while it
is snowing. It started much earlier than usual for winter. Winter officially
started here only two days ago.We usually don't get much snow before mid or
end Dec. We usually only get about 1 white Christmas out of 7.This year and
last it started in 2nd week of November. The temp is going up tomorrow and
it will rain/snowflurries creating slush and Christmas day sunny and day
after it will be a lot of rain and cause flooding. Thats how it goes here.
The temp goes up which causes rain, then goes down and we get snow. The
upper US states especially Buffalo often get a lot more snow than we do in
southern Ontario.
