Riven changes down to 640x480 on loading withiout you even noticing and on
quitting your desktop is exactly the same.

On my monitor, which is a 15" set to 800 X 600 32-bit color, Riven
sets it to 640 X 480 (16-bit color?) when the game starts and back to
800 X 600 when it exits and does NOT mess up the icons, so I think
it is doing what you want. After playing it for a few days, I am very
impressed! I think it's well worth buying.
