Still alive?! Some of us played that game as kids and are still under
30, which qualifies as at least marginally alive. Seriously, though, I
don't think there are any widely played adventures that date back before
this one. Some people consider it one of the all-time classics.

In the house you find a set of keys. Take the keys to the river bed,
and follow the river bed to a grating; unlock it with the keys. DaDA!
The entrace to Colosal Cave! That should get you started at least...

It's been a LONG time, but I think you get in through the kitchen window
around back. There are some rooms in the house to explore, and if you
move the rug in the living room I think there is a trap door. This leads
down into the cave system which I'll leave for you to explore. I may
even have a map of the caves laying around somewhere, but I do remember
you should definitely map it out. Also, there are some "magic" words
that are useful from certain locations (e.g., "XYZZY" and "PLOUGH"?).

Hope this helps,
Kevin.

I think you might be confusing parts of Zork with Colossal Cave.
Colossal Cave definately uses XYZZY and PLOUGH though.
In Colossal Cave, you must find a grate in a river near the house.
You should map it out as well. There are alot of places that all
look familiar. Some are the same location, some are not. It's good
to map it out and drop objects to map out these mazes properly.
Zork I is similar to Colossal Cave at the beginning and even in some
other parts.

How to throw me back 16 years in one fell swoop... feels good.
Don't use the magic words until you find them in the game. You'll
have a lot more fun playing the game if you feel a little helpless at
first. Thinking about the game now it is pretty hard not typing off
the whole scenario as I remember it. But I at least am not going to
volunteer any information you don't ask for. :)

No no no... I think you are confusing Adventure, (also know as
Collosal Cave), and Zork I. In Zork there was the big white house at
the beginning that you entered. In CC you get the keys, etc from the
shack and enter the cave through the grate. (There's another way in!)

I still fire up Adventure on our mainframe running VM/CMS now and then
just to make sure I can still get through it with all 350 points!

Drop me a note if you need any hints on it....

I even still have the maps....

Which game was the one with the giant snake and the bird in the bird cage and
the you can't get past the snake unless you "use" the bird?

And was that the same game where you had to finally kill someone with your
bare hands?

Collosal Cave (Adventure) had the snake and the bird. I don't remember
having to kill anyone with my bare hands...
