Okay, I feel like a complete and utter moron. Lab blows up, I'm stuck. I've
looked all around and haven't seen any way out. I tried the door, locked.
Tried one of the retinal scanners, access denied. I'm probably overlooking
the completely obvious. What do I do now?

Go over and talk to one of the scientists?

If you are stuck where you actually did the experiment, "Use"(press the use
button on) the damaged retinal scanner. It will malfunction and open the
door. If you are passed that, then you will usually need a live scientist to
open locked doors for you. Walk up to one and "Use" him. He will follow you
and open the door. They do get scared and won't help, so make sure there are
not any creatures around.

Good Luck.

He's probably playing the demo version that got shipped with some OEM video
(and sound too I think) cards.

Apart from being completely irrelevant to the discussion, it is
inappropriate of you to make that statement unless you are completely
certain that he obtained the game illegally through warez channels.
