Can anyone use a dual analog stick with Vice City PC?

When I try to use my Gravis Eliminator Aftershock with Vice City, the
right analog stick is all screwey. When I press left, I look up, When
I press right I look down, etc. If I set the analog stick to "mouse"
in the gravis software it works ok in the menus (that is, I can use
the r. analog stick to navigate the menus in Vice City). But, once I
start to play the game it crashes.

Can anyone else use an analog stick for this game. Is there another
way around this? I have tried many uninstall/reinstalls and
confugurations. Hoping for a patch or something.

Really? Does the controller work well with most other pc games. Also,
did you need to buy some sort of adapter to hook it up to the USB
port, or do they make PS2 controllers that way? (I'm obviously not
very familiar with the PS2 console)

There is a program that can sually get around these problems, as it
can emulate keyboard presses based on a joystick axis. So you can make
it work with any game, whether it supports joystick or not. The only
downside is you will get a digital response (on/off), where with
native joystick support in the game you'll often get analog response.
It's called JoyToKey, it's free and works flawlessly in all versions
of Windows:

Joe, this does not sound like an optimum solution. If I wanted digital
response from my gamepad I can alway use a $10.00 gamepad pro with a
digital keypad. The sole reason I purchased a dual analog stick was
for ANALOG control.

John:

I ran into a similar problem with my Thrustmaster. GTA3/GTAVC are kind of
screwy in how they look for their axes. I think they must have test-played
it with the same kind of converter that Les has. :) If the Gravis
software allows you to simply reassign axes, then just assign RAnalog L/R
to the U/D part and vice versa, then reverse them as necessary if pushing
left is giving you right, etc. Otherwise, you'll have to mess with the
driver entry like I did.

Here's the link to how I solved it. It's registry hacking, but a similar
fix should work for you if you. Obviously, look for the Gravis to be
listed in the section I mention instead of the Thrustmaster. You can
switch the axes manually this way, but you can't reverse them (that I've
seen).

Who cares? The control system for the various vehicles and even the
player in FPS mode is the worst there's ever been in a PC game... and
to make matters worse, they actually FORCE you to try and fly
helicopters and planes with non-configurable and non-intuitive and
non-sensical control keys. I don't think they could have done things
worse if they'd tried.

Instead of trying to figure out how to compensate for their bad
programming skills, you should be seeing a shrink to figure out why
you even want to play this game anyway. It's nothing but a hybrid of a
bad driving game(are there any good ones? pretending to drive a car
isn't exactly entertainment in my book), a *really* bad flight sim
game, and the worse first person shooter ever created on any platform.
Add to the mix childish mission design (timed, yet) and all you've got
left is a bunch of really bad graphics of scantily clad females (that
you get to kill for no apparrent reason) and a thousand other elements
of random violence. You aren't even killing bad guys, or good guys.
Just random innocent bystanders.

I can't believe this franchise gets all the good press it gets. Are
the rest of you living on the same planet I am? Hello???

Les, or anyone who has gotten this to work-

How were you able to get the right analog stick axes working properly
within GTA:VC? I'm using a Sony Dual Shock with a Soyo Kiki-X USB/PSX
adapter, and I'm getting the transposed axes on the right analog
stick. Everything else works fine, only the right analog is
misbehaving - reversed up/down, right/left. In the controller
properties, the axes are correct. I'm running W2K SP3, DirectX 9.0a,
Kiki-X 2.1a drivers.

Thanks in advance,

Eric

I hear ya. I am constantly badgering developers to have joystick
support in their game. Pretty incredible that it wouldn't be a
standard feature in this day and age.

Perhaps you're right about this. However, I bought the game and I
bought the gamepad and I'm just trying to make things work.

I would buy a console (which would have more reliable controls), but
at my age it looks a bit childish sitting out on the living room
floor. The PC allows me to conceal my boyish need to play games every
once in a awhile in lieu of doing actual work and attending to my
adult responsibilities.

Did you mention something about seeing a shrink :)?

Thrasher <spect...@hotmail.com> thought that a good way to

You can configure the controls for helicopter mode. Unfortunately
they don't translate well to driving mode, but since there is only
one heli mission (which is optional) it doesn't really bother me.

This game is really meant to be played with analog controls though,
especially when you get the real helicopter.

Have you tried decaf? You're just getting way too worked up about
video games.

Are you aware of how dumb that sounds? Ok, you don't like driving or
racing games, maybe other people do.

Grand Theft Auto isn't a first-person shooter at all. It's an action
game. The combat is secondary to the driving around.

Depends on how you play the game. If you kill alot of bystanders it can
actually make the game much harder, and in Vice City the police don't give
up easily. In some cases a single hit-and-run can gets a viscious cop on
your tail.

It's not the greatest game ever, neither is it a bad game, nor is it the
end of civilization that the newsmedia make it out to be.
