Hello all. I have followed this group for some time
but only posted once before. I value everyone's knowlege,
so here's the question. I have the Ati Radeon 4870 and
I want to upgrade to the 6950. I believe the 4870 is
PCI Express 2.0. I have two of these slots on the mobo.
The 6950 is PCI Exrpess 2.1. Will this be an issue?
Will a pc made for PCIe 2.0 accept the newer PCIe 2.1?
If I do this upgrade, that would be great. There's many
newer titles I would like to be able to play with all or most
of the eye candy turned up.

Yes, the newer card should work without any problem. PCI-E 2.1 is backward
compatible.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply, KCB. Now I just need to measure the
inside of the chassis one more time, and hopefully I can do the upgrade.

Just curious Erik; I've got the same video card as you. And yes my PC is
getting pretty old as well (still have an old dual core 2.8 or something
with 3.5g of ram). What are the specs of the rest of your machine?

I'm wondering if I'll get any benefits from upgrading my graphics card
as well or if the rest of my machine is going to be the problem.

Hello Ceo. I'm using a Core 2 Quad with 6 Gigs of ram. I'm hoping
that with the upgrade I'll be able to play some newer titles. I have about
2 years worth of "older" games, but would like more options. Also, I use
an app called D3DGear to take screenshots and ingame movies that
is getting a little slow with the game Test Drive Unlimited (1) I really
like
taking movies of my games, so I'm hoping this upgrade is the right choice.
Even if I can play half a dozen or so newer titles, it would extend the
usefullness
of this rig by a year or more, which is like money in the bank to me.

Thanks for the reply, so your machine at its core is quite a bit faster
anyway. I think it might be time for a whole new system :/
