Howdy, y'all!

We're working away on DOOM day and night here at id
Software and I decided to take a little time to get some
new screen shots together for everyone. You want to see
what you'll be getting, right?

On FTP.UWP.EDU in /pub/incoming/id you will find
DOOMSCN5.ZIP. The files are in PCX format and there are
15 of them.

Of course -- it plays cooler than it looks!

YES YES YES YES YES!

Awesome, too! Those textured floors/ceilings really look great! I also love
the variety of walls - they don't seem to be as repetitive as in Wolf. I
also like the fact that it's "darker" than Wolf - makes it harder to see, and
much more challenging... And you gotta love that pump shotgun reload... :-)

> Of course -- it plays cooler than it looks!

*sigh* It *looks* done... Any hints on how far along it is?

Well, the reason that they can release screen shots (This is not a demo
really) is because it's so easy. I bet it didn't take whoever it was that
made the screen shots more then 20 minutes to get the screen shots, put
the files on the ftp site and post the message about them, they could
release tons and tons of screen shots relativly easily.

RELEASE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please? :v)

Looks *great*! I've got a couple of questions (other than WHEN?!?!?!):
- Do the golden eyes mean there's a God mode?
- Is the 200% armour legally obtainable?
- Will the codes to do such mucking be made available with the release,
or do we have to wait until one of your programmers breaks the code of
silence? :v)

Can't wait, guys, it looks GREAT!

if wolf 3d is any indication of its popularity, someone will figure out
all the god codes eventually, and probably sooner than later in doom's
case.

There was a previous message saying that ID could make 70 frames/s in
DOOM. How about making a stereo image at say 30 frames/s then? That
would be awsome!

Did anyone notice that there appears to be a GOD mode in DOOM? I noticed
that in the screenshots where your character was at 100% health, his eyes
glowed yellow...

The high resolution was impressive as hell! This may make me buy a new
computer :)

Well, if you look at the pics, you'll notice that at the bottom, in the
text box, there's a line that says "Screenshot"... Built-in ss functionality
would sure make it easy, huh? :-)

Who says we *care* about DOOM? :-D (just kidding, if you didn't notice)

They're great, man!! The walls are *so* well done, the player's hand
(and gun) is great - but the mob's resolution is somewhat wide (their
pixels are *big*): where them too close to the player?

It must be so, I think...

Yup, I just didn't want to say it at the time cause I thought that might
have been interpreted as extra/unnecesary work. =-) But a screen shot
feature is very helpful in the testing stages, so you can get a screen
shot of a bug as you see it..

One disturbing thing is that the overhead map that was shown as a pop-up in
other screen shots does not appear in these. Is it still "in there"?
Having to map the levels by hand while alien hordes snap at your heels
would be a bit difficult.

It's in there, but it has its own screen which is why you don't see it
in the screenshots. Doesn't have the impact of the first-person view.
It's pretty hip, though. I think (hope) you'll like it.

And to the rumor that Doom takes gobs of memory to run, it ain't the
case. See, we weren't kidding when we said the alpha leak was a baaad
thing! I've played doom on a four meg machine, and our goal is to get
it happy on two megs. Don't worry too much. It'll run on memory-wise
wimpy machines, it'll just hit the disk a lot.

Tell ya what, though, kids. Local video bus will make you just darn
happy. Smooth as cat-shit on linoleum. Pardon the expression.

(Yes, I understand is was an alpha shot) but what about (what appeared
to be) the armor view with _both_ the map and the view at the same time?

They can be displayed full screen using CompuShow (ThanX Stan, for pointing this
out). It might be found in /pub/docs/history/Software @ ra.msstate.edu (among
other sites, probably). Look for files cshow86*.zip or something similar.

Good luck, Frans

If you've got Windows, the program you should be using is Paint Shop Pro 2.0,
available on standard Windows ftp sites as pspro20.zip. Reads almost any
graphics format known (finally JPEG! :-), and has a reasonable set of image
manipulation tools (it's not Photoshop, but...). Check it out.
