I have just (at last) finished Homeworld. On uninstalling, I also got rid of
the Sierra Utilities package which they insist on shoving on your hard
drive. It then uninstalled every single game in my 'games' folder, all 12 of
them. Including save games. If the prick who wrote that code worked for me,
I'd kick the shit out of him, before firing him. And after. And every other
time I saw him.

Thanks Sierra. You're an example to us all. Fuckwits.

Same thing happened to me. I lost all my saves on all my games. The
uninstall of sierra utilities was taking forever (had already been ~10
minutes) and alt-ctrl-del didn't work, so I rebooted. When I turn my
computer back on, sierra utilities is gone, but so are all my other
games. About half of the files for the Sims were left- I must hjave
rebooted while it was busy destroying that directory. Unfortunately,
my saves for it were already gone. There was no trace of anything
else in the /games directory. I have always hated sierra utilities just
because it's useless, but now I have a hard reason.

I believe that happened with Half Life as well - I can't believe they didn't fix it
by now. Truly idiotic.

Would someone please post the names of the various games produced by
those guys? Based on your post and numerous replies echoing your
experience, it sounds like everyone could use a reminder. It appears
that they need to be avoided like the plague.

Wow. They had supposedly fixed that in a patch file for Half Life. But
apparently this was was even present in the Half Life Uplink demo that
came out about 8 months later. As I recall, Bungie's Myth II had a
similiar problem, but at least they had the balls to recall the game
(around Christmas time no less!) before too many got into the retail
channel.

Amazing...is this pesky "utility" present in Tribes 2 also?

Glad the demo of it didn't do that to my system when I uninstalled it last year.
I didn't go for the full game because I liked Freespace's graphics better.

I've a number of Sierra games and other programs. Where is this
Utilities program located? Folder, etc. It's not located anywheres in
the Start menu. I don't remember one loading when I loaded HL, Caesar 3,
or the other Sierra games. Then again, I usually do not do a 'typical'
load either.

I am happy to report that Tribes 2 does not have the truly dreadful Sierra
Utility!

That piece of crap never did work right. Supposedly it worked properly BUT
only if you accept the default directory. If you install anywhere else, it
can go into its delete everything routine, up to and including everything in
the root directory, (depending on where you installed it).

When I had contacted them, their response was that you should install it the
way they said. They never considered it a bug or a problem.

The only safe way to delete their stuff is to manually delete the folders
and shortcuts. DO NOT use the utilities program for anything. If you check
the properties for any of the utilities shortcuts, you can see where it
installed, (I've forgotten). Then I always deleted it right away. The
install doesn't give you a choice whether to install them or not. And I
didn't trust it to uninstall itself, (obviously).

Not all of their programs had it, but any that did would always install two
or more shortcuts on your machine.

Jack, I never realized what little devils these utilities are. I found mine
squatting in Start/Programs/Sierra. I deleted them manually, and then wiped
out the shortcuts, too, like ceicoe said to do.

Yep, you're right. "Sierra On-line", and "Sierra Utilities" shortcuts. Got
rid of them and the targets (files).

That's not enough. You should also remove them from the registry, as
well as the add/remove programs area.

There's a way to edit the registry to remove this completely, as well
as another program (tweakUI? I forgot...) that can remove the entries
from "add/remove programs".

I used to know how to COMPLETELY remove all the registry entries, but
I deleted the newsgroup post that explained how :(

And since Deja.com's archive is still gone ......

There's a nice little freeware utility called EasyCleaner that can
remove any 'dangling' entries from the registry, and lots of other
good things.

I had forgotten about the registry entries. Microsoft also has a utility
called regclean which might help. I don't have an URL for it, but doing a
search on their site for regclean.exe should find it. Alternately, if you
have Norton Utilities, I think WinDoctor might help.
