I'm asking this because the issue is coming up in a coming book script I'm
writing (honest! :o) ), and I was a little bit surprised to realize that I
never heard about it before.

However, what (legal, but, more obviously, illegal) drugs could someone who
plays RTS and FPS games take to "improve" his performance? Think of doping,
but, for example, in a "Quake" or "Starcraft" tournament. As I wrote, I was
surprised to realize how, with all the tournaments where you can win fame
and real money out there (and exp. in S. Korea) the problem of doping was
never considered - at least not that know of.

Once I know the drugs I can do research on the side effects etc. for my
story (real world, late 2000s, no SF elements). But the only I thought about
was cocaine, and I'm not even sure that it would do any good.

Thanks for the help!

V.

Caffeine and sugar are probably high on the list. The colour black is
optional :-)

Other than that, whatever is in Battery, Jolt, etc. Whether these are
considered drugs or not in larger concentrations, I have no idea.

Methamphetamines would improve concentration and reaction times.

That's exactly what I wanted to suggest too. Well, except for the black,
although everybody knows that black computers are faster, ofcourse.

Jolt simply has a double dose of cafeine. At least as far as I know.

Perhaps cocaine would be popular with some people because it makes
them *think* they rule, pwn, etc, but I doubt it's very beneficial
in most games. A clear mind is often an advantage.

Personally I just stick to large doses of cafeine. And indeed sugar
and other high energy foods.

You need something that improves mental ability, and most illegal
drugs tend to ruin it.

At best, you could use Caffene if you wanted to stay awake for a
longer period of time, or you could wait for Orexin-A to become
available for mass consumption.

Cocaine isn't a good choice - take a look at side-effects to see why.

Acid, man! Sure, I don't often get past the splash screen, but the
colours are, like, WOW!

It can be a real downer when the keyboard starts eating your fingers
though...

After 12 days straight, NO drug will improve concentration and reaction
times.

After 12 days, you're pretty much dreaming while awake. Not a
good psychological situation. And your eyes go into REM state
every time you blink. You're hallucinating by then, and not from
the direct effect of the drugs but from lack of sleep.

You start going downhill after only 4-5 days, though making it 12
days (or more) is certainly not uncommon.

From what I've heard, elite FPS and RTS players avoid all forms of
caffeine and sugar, because (in their experience) it ultimately causes
performance to deterioate.

Crack != Speed With crack, you'd be jonesing for another hit 5
minutes later and that would fuxor your concentration.
