I see on the ATI site that dual monitor systems have a problem with games
that run on Quake 2 or 3 engines and that would be Alice. It said to disable
dual monitor in ATI display, but it looks like its already disabled as it
has a big red X across one of the monitors (also the TV as well). I don't
have my computer hooked to any other monitors or a TV. I was wondering if I
can remove secondary monitor from Device manager, though it might just come
back again. There is no provision to disable 9000 Pro Secondary Monitor it
in Device manager. You have to remove it.
Does anyone have a solution as to how I can get the game to run again?. I
was in the middle of the game when my previous motherboard went south.
Thanks for any help.
Gary
Your problem is that you have installed new hardware but the game is
configured to use your OLD hardware.
You now have a Radeon, but the game thinks you have a voodoo and is
trying to use the 3dfx specific drivers.
You may need to reinstall the game (or change it's settings if there's a
configuration tool).

I thought of that, but on the other hand, if you look at
http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/3235.html on ATI site, it mentions about
GL problems with Quake 2 and 3 engine when you use a video card with dual
monitor settings. I am not using a secondary monitor. Just the one monitor,
and when I look in ATI display, the second monitor setting is disabled. I
American McGee's Alice uses either Quake 2 or 3 engine. Uses some version of
Quake for sure..

I was using an ATI Xpert 2000, which the game might be looking for, but I
uninstalled all my old video card drivers, so it wouldn't find any drivers
for my old card.

I can't remember now about if there was settings to configure or not. I
might try taking out my saved games and installing the game again, but that
ATI information has me wondering if that will help.
Thanks.

I uninstalled Alice and reinstalled and the game still won't start. I got
the same errors.
I ran Direct X 9.0 which was installed when I downloaded the most recent
drivers, and it says that Direct Draw and Direct Play are not working
properly, or something like that. I got the latest video drivers from ATI
site, but the problem seems to be with Alice which uses Open GL. I have the
same problem with "Undying" which worked fine with my old card, but won't
work now.
Gary
Sorry, yes, its me JLC. I sometimes use Gary - long story. I didn't expect
to find you here too - LOL - no wonder you are confused. I'm not surprised.
. A computer friend said to post a message in the action group that I might
get a reply about Open GL and maybe a solution to my Open GL problem with
Alice. I didn't want to keep bugging you. I didn't see anything in your
other messages about reinstalling DX 9 though.

You are apparently trying to play the Glide version (3dfx Voodoo) of
the game. Did your previous system have a 3dfx card, by any chance?
Is there an init screen before the game starts on which you
can choose Glide (3dfx), DirectX or OpenGL ? Don't choose
Glide !
Presumably you have loaded the correct drivers for your Ati 9000
and have NOT loaded any 3dfx drivers on your new system ??
Do not attempt to load them either !
If you have loaded any 3dfx drivers, do a complete system rebuild
and try again.
John Lewis
I have never had a 3dfx card at any time. Thats what I can't understand. The
initialization screen scrolls very fast and there is no option to choose
Glide or DirectX or Open GL. I had no problem running the game with my
previous ATI Xpert 200 video card.

I downloaded the drivers for 9000 Pro which is what I have. And no, I
wouldn't download any 3dfx drivers.

Maybe I have to download the drivers again and reinstall them.
In case if gives you any extra insight, below I will paste the complete
error message which scrolls when I click on the game to start it up. Thanks
for your help.

Did you fully re-install the game when you transferred to your new
machine, or did you try to short-cut by copying over files ?
If you did not fully re-install, then please do so and check out the
game from scratch. If it works you can copy over your save-games
later. Also select the Windows Start Menu for the game and
look for a Settings, or Video Setup entry or similar.

I think what happened with those error messages I got when trying to run
Alice was because Voodoo cards had problems with the game, so maybe when
theres a problem they figure
you have a Voodoo 3dfx. In the readme file it mentions problems with Voodoo
3dfx but does not mention any other video cards problems.

Yes, I uninstalled the game and reinstalled it again. Copying over files
usually doesn't work well.

Glad that you got the problem fixed. Enjoy the game.
John Lewis
By the way, should AGP texturing acceleration be enabled in DirectX? its is
disabled.
How do I enable it?
Thanks to you and the others here for the help.

Check Display--->Settings----> Advanced ----> Troubleshoot and make
sure the slider is far to the right.
Otherwise, it could be an issue with any or all of:-
Motherboard Driver
System Ram size (least likely)
Aperture Setting in BIOS.
John Lewis
I guess you mean under the Performance tab where the slider is for All
accelerations. Yes, its at the far right.

I went before to Asus site and it was too busy so I will go back again and
see if there are updated motherboard drivers for my board. What should the
Aperture setting be in my BIOS? I have the aperture set for 64MB for AGP
Aperture. I have 256 DDR RAM.
Mary
Reinstall your VIA 4 in 1 drivers which should 'turn on' AGP for you.
http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=300
I also recommend you upgrade your ram ASAP.. 512 is bare minimum
nowadays. You'll see a rather substantial inprovement with 512MB or
1GB.
64MB is fine for 256 DDR Ram but once you go 512 or higher you'll want
to bump that up to 128MB.

Thanks for the URL. I had already downloaded the drivers, but hadn't
installed them yet. I notice it says version 4.51 for WinME/Win2000/XP -
doesn.t mention Win98SE which is what I use.
I was using v.4.49 which was the CD that came with my Asus A7V8X-X
motherboard.
I installed the 4 in 1 Via drivers just now and everything was automatic,
except it came up with a Window for me to choose "VIA Standard PCI to ISA
Bridge". I did a "show all hardware" and clicked on VIA and to the right it
one line says "CPP to AGP controller (Via Technologies", the next line said
VIA CPU to AGP 2.0/AGP 3.0 controller". I didn't know which one to choose,
so I clicked on "Cancel".
Another window came up after that for VIA Standard Hose bridge, with the
same choices (CPP to AGP controller and CPU to AGP 2.0/AGP 3.0" - again I
didn't know which one to chose so I cancelled.
AGP texture acceleration still says "Not available" in Direct X 9.b.
Could it be that AGP texture is not provided with my Radeon 9000 pro?

Maybe later on, but for now, I don't do any heavy duty stuff, and most games
I play are adventure games and once in a while a game like American McGee's
Alice which I am now playing. It worked ok after I installed DX 9b.
